I don't agree that Weckl is souless - he can put some incredible feeling into the drums. Not only is he very tight, but he seems to 'feel' the grooves and, also, clearly loves drumming.
I don't agree that Weckl is bored playing this song...some people say he's a souless technician, but you gotta admit he grooves. And Chick's and Eric's solos more than make up for any supposed lack of enthusiasm

Sman72, you're absolutely right. Look at everyone up there. They look like their bored. Weckl doesn't play this song anywhere close to as funky as Novak. The Chick Corea Elektric band II played this song with much more energy and liveliness. It seems that without Miller, Earl, or Novak (especially Novak), the song doesn't have as much spirit and energy. Search CTA (Chick Corea Elektric Band 2) for a much more killer version of the song, or look in the related videos section.

You're right :-) Yes, it is played perfectly, but with no soul. Weckl, oh yeah, amazing, but.. it just sounds overall like a machine played song. It sounds like a..uhm... MIDI file ? :-) but just better sounding. Novak, Earl, Miller rule ! :-)
I used to really not like Dave W. for exactly what your saying. He has always been more of a technique/drummers drummer.
On the flipside. I have been trying to give him another chance, and I have found some good music he's on, more importantly I'm into his presence more these days. He has gotten better musically....tech. too and I'm starting to like him now. His thing really is the electric jazz, latin styles.....I.M.O.
Not to put the band down, but they dont have much hype here. It sounds like the song's on viagra. I know they're alot older now, but back then, I wish I existed to see them but here...Its like....I cant even explain it. You get me though, right?
The band didn't even consist of the same people at the time the album was released. Then: Chick - Keys Eric Marienthal - Sax Mike Miller - Guitar Jimmy Earl - Bass Gary Novak - Drums In this video: Chick - Keys Eric Marienthal - Sax Frank Grambale - Guitar John Pattitucci(?) - Bass Dave Weckl - Drums
This is from the Elektric Band II only album "Paint the World", in which Gambale, Weckl and Patitucci were replaced by Mike Miller, Gary Novak (who also played bass in Dave Weckl's "Heads Up" album) and Jimmy Earl, respectively. ...and C.T.A. is an old original (recorded in 1953 by Miles Davis) by Jimmy Heath (from the Heath brothers). Long live the Elektric Band, but the original one!

Maybe, but listen to the original Gary Novak CTA groove on the Paint the World recording, there's a natural looseness in it.
that Weckl fails to capture here.

Rofl, that was a hilarious crack, but Eric Marienthal is a beast at saxophone. You're gonna get a lot of hate for that xD
