Every game show has its "most talked-about moment". Password Plus had the "French" incident, The Price is Right had its "Yolanda" hour, and Super Password had this.
I was a little boy when I first saw Rip on TV and I said "This guy is NUTS!" and I've been a fan ever since. Thanks for all the laughs Rip and you look great with or without your rug.
Rip Taylor was hilarious as the host of the "The $1.98 Beauty Contest". I fondly recall the show...had a lot in common with "The Gong Show"....I think both shows were produced by the eccentric Chuck Barris. THANKS for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us! :)
No. I get him confused with a lot of others. He was unusual on $1.98 beauty contest, though, which came out when I was like 8 yrs old. Ah, no wonder I grew up to be an entertainer.
Unfortunately, no. He died of a brain tumor around 1990 or 1991. He managed to shoot a pilot for the Match Game relaunch before passing away. I don't know if it's ever been shown...
@startrekkin58 From what I read and heard Bert died during a taping of Win Lose or Draw of the brain tumor. It was a shame he as such a good host and will be missed.
Yes, I am sorry to say it is true. Bert was a wonderful person and a very good friend to my family. I will never forget him for as long as I live. I treasure the photo I have of us together at my dad's wedding. He was beautiful.
Back in the day ... games shows were the retirement homes for B-list celebrities ... where sexual innuendos were encouraged and public intoxication was celebrated. Ah, the golden age of television.
@fardirass - and game show producers knew how to have fun and not stick to a timed format where something like this would be cut out in favor of more Depends ads.
He wears it mostly for fun now. He was on the short lived remake of I've Got a Secret (2007) on GSN and he was wearing it then! And it looks exactly the same as it did here! lol He took off his hair and started throwing confetti around, as only he can. :)
Rip is fantastic, and the late Bert Convy was such a fun talent as a host and occasional Actor as well. I miss the energy, escapist fun and irreverence of the old game shows like this. Now any new game show, as few as they are, feel too contrived, forced, over serious, and are not even 1/10 as fun as the old school of game shows. Then as now, we live in a ugly world, and game shows should be light escapist fare such as this.
Ever noticed (and great point btw about Rip and Bert) that all the NEW game shows, their first background color seems to be black? (new meaning not WoF, Jeopardy or TPiR)
Yes, the set designs are downright morbid today and run counter to the alleged idea that game shows are supposed to be fun.
The current crop of younger Producers of todays handful of game shows on TV in America are seemingly indifferent to the lessons of the past and lost, much like the country itself seems to have become circa 2008.
This was hysterical. I cry laughing every time I watch this clip. Bert Convy and Rip Taylor are the best. They are hysterical and always have me crying laughing.
Thanks for showing the conclusion of the game. I was scared to death that I was never going to find out what "shrink", "absorbing", and "testimony" describe.
I feel like my generation is deprived of awesome moments like these.
