The key is to be as stealthy as possible, if one is seen then death usually follows the reveal of it's identity. Shapeshifters indeed and shadow people describe this event. It does happen and is still used today. Misfortune and Unsual circumstances usually preceed a mysterious death or maming.

i used 2 stay on the rez with my little sister and me. i was like 10 and my sister was 7, parents were out partying, drinking cases of beer. i did see one of those types, its good 2 have a few dogs when ur on the rez 2 back u up.

You do know that skinwalkers can take the shape of animals (including dogs). Plus, I don't think a few dogs are going help against a skinwalker. Being as they were once medicine men.
