The very first time I´ve heard this song was one year before my brother ( and my best friend) comitted suicide. Every time I heard it is special because of it. I was never the kind of guy who was touched for any song... untill this one made me sense. Muchas gracias Eddie...
@dupencja kosmos być może tak - matka ziemia nie. Było takie przysłowie "sky is a limit'. Choć może masz rację...czasem zgubię gdzieś klucze i mam wrażenie, że wpadają w jakąś dziurę bez dna.
The story of "Off He Goes" concerns a friend who periodically comes whirling in and out of the protagonist's life. In an interview, Vedder revealed himself to be the friend. Vedder said, "The song "Off He Goes" is really about me being a shit friend. I'll show up and everything's great and then all of the sudden I'm outta there..."
"Until a quater to ten... I saw the strain creep in..." When something heavy is on ur mind... u can loose it (forget about it for a while) but when the fun comes to an end or ur layin in bed at night (i.e. a quater to ten) that heavy, sinking feeling comes back and ur off again.... thanks PJ
it is the only comment you can do.. after knowing all their songs... (start with "given to fly" or "release" for the lyrics, ending with whatever you want...)
I would have to say after that that he was ordered by our government to blast all that remained after they bombed the place. he was a gunner on a helicopter.
Damn, his voice is just golden!!Yeah, the song is so about Ed.That's why Sean Penn had him write for "Into The Wild",because part of Ed will never be tamed!!Great song!
This song always seems to remind me of the blind melon song, mouth full of cavaties. The music itself is quite different although the lyrics are pretty similar, on how both Hoon and Vedder wrote a song expressing their feelings about their friend(or they truely singing about themselves??). Just my opinion (obviously) but I think that both of them were definitely 2 of the best front men in the 90's. Unfortunately, only Vedder continues to run with the torch.
fisherman, it's bullshit not ocean. easy mistake though, it fits well. anyway, it's actually about how bad a friend eddie himself was to someone. their name slips my mind, but in a concert he said 'this is about shit friends-me'
I always get a lot of images from this song. I guess I see it as a memory of Kurt. The Neail Young references also make a lot of sense. But, for me this one will always be about Kurt.
This song is about Eddie's(along with many others) musical inspiration. It is about his friendship with Neil Young. Kurt Cobain also idolized Neil which is why his suicide note quoted lyrics from Young's song Hey Hey My My.
Wow. This song, a classic. In my top 10 of PJ songs of all time. This song never fails to relax, inspire, and get me giddy about how f-ing good it really is. Not to mention the very out in the middle of nowhere introspective vibes and visuals I get from this. 5 stars, no question.
This is my favorite bootleg off the entire 2000 tour, granted I only head about 5 of them.
And this performance, wow. Sometimes when they perform a song, you can tell that it's just not the night for the song or they already played it the last few nights before or they just weren't feeling it for some reason, but in this performance you can tell that they were really into it, at least Eddie was.
I'm pretty sure it's pointed toward meth or heroin abuse. "His face seemed pulled and Tense, Like he's ridin on a motor bike in the strongest wind". " He's always movin' much too fast".etc.
Is the fact that he says 'this is about being friends with an asshole' and points to himself not an obvious enough hint to prove he wrote this about himself?
This song is about him growing up with a friend and when he became famous he became an "asshole" friend. He was always on the go and it's sang from the view of his friend looking at his Eddie's life. He stays for awhile to visit and it seems like old times again and before his friend knows it Eddie's off again.
i read or i heard that this song was about Layne Staley the deceast singer of Alice in Chains...Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains were really tight and there are some members of PJ on the Mad Season album with Layne...
but you're right, PJ and Alice in Chains (especially Layne Staley) is close friends... there's only 1 member of PJ in Mad Season, which is Mike McCready... :)

ukxm336, from my perspective PJ equal Nsync. Both are meaningless plastic manufactured to be idolized by the mindless masses.
