Aah, real R&B. Harold singing lead but Teddy Pendergrass was mainly the voice in the group...and you cannot deny their songs, especially when Ms. Sharon Paige came into the picture. What a classic. It's kewl to come to YT and not only hear classics but share them with other folks that can appreciate true R&B.
This song was released about February 1975 on their "To Be True" LP on the Philadelphia International Records label! Lead singer(either Harold Melvin or Teddy Pendergrass)has that Jerry Butler-like vocals!
@Chicago10281 Harold Melvin on lead vocals. Harold sings lead on I Should Be Your Lover, and shares the lead with Teddy Pendergrass on Hope That We Can Be Together Soon, and You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good, as well as others. Ciao!!!
@renaissanceman165 Thank you for the post. This evening i was listening to them on my ipod and couldnt remember who sang lead on what songs. I always did get it confused but Teddy had a more aggressive and raw approach , where Harold was a bit more calm and smooth. Nevertheless at times they sound similar. This takes me way back! I saw them back in 1975 or so , whenever this album came out. It was at Shea Stadium in New York
Respond to this video... and there was about 7 other groups there. everyone performed and i f i remember correctly , i heard that they was a no show. Leaving the stadium , i suddenly heard Bad Luck and flew back in and to the front, and they showed up. Harold , Teddy, Sharon and the rest. The wait was worth it, but i could tell even , and being that close , that Harold was a hand full!!! Still a great talent , and may he RIP!
man i remember when they came out with this album i use to take this album to the parties and the use to play this song so you can slow jam i even bought the suit that harold melvin had on man a song i like when raps at the especially when he says to much absents will make the man wonder
@curtisjones400 It seem like Gamle and Huff were before their time. They were the truth. Can't get great music like this now. I was just telling my friend we grew up to some great music.
@curtisjones400 In total agreement with you...my growing up during my pre-teen yrs. on up...their music made me appreciate music as a whole, for that I was 1 of the members of h.s. Orchestra in Bklyn, NY...Beautiful music indeed!
I'm trying to locate an old song but can't remember who sang it. I just temember that it said something like "take good care of you dear just for me and I'll take care of me for you...." Can anyone help me please?
I was little girl, roller skating in the park on thoose metal skates with the key to it, when i broke my ankle. I remeber my father picking me up and carrying me into the car to take me to the hospital. This song was on the radio. I never forgot the lyrics and had learned this song on that very first time that i heard it. It stuck with me all thoose years. Im 43 now. and i love it more now..than ever.
What a great time that was to be a teenager. The oarties and music and radio were so good. I'm glad I'm not a teen today. The music is so cold and lacks soul. Just listen to the arraingments in the background of this song, Pure talent!!
@namvet12 , I know. I heard of his passing yesterday and it broke my heart. You know what really hurts? There is no talent that can replace him today. I pray that Teddy Pendergrass knew the God of Abrahem, Isaac and Jacob. I heard that he did. Praise God.
@1123michelle Yes my friend. Isn't it so good to be secure in Him. I only wished that I acknowledged the Creator Almighty when I was a youing man. I would have saved myself from a lot of heartache and trouble. Praise Him Always.

I am a fanatic harold melvin and the blue note, from an early age, her songs set a memorable stage in the'70s, the departure of Teddy Pendergrass, as soloist, and after the death of the singer and creator of the group Harold Melvin and others -great voices of the group, gave the true essence and style soul music and r & b. ..
Wow, this song is the bomb! I was young, but I now I really feel what he is saying in this song. It would really be hard today, people are soooooo much more 'foward'. (LOL)
harold and teddy had a falling out over Sharon Page...to bad....but enogh of that...what a great song.... I was 11 years old and remember it like it was yesterday....
A lot of these guys were tightfisted SOB's. Count Basie never paid a nickel for one hotel room or meal for his band members. Mercer Ellington said his father never wanted him to succeed at ANYTHING. James Brown would toss away band members like used toilet tissue. Many band leaders were supremely talented musicians but absolute shits as human beings.
@curtisjones400 It's good to know that we still got Cool Brothers that's still got the groove and the respect for our beautiful Black Sister's. LOL.... By the way I'm a singer Gospel that is, my Group is called The Original Kingdom Travelers, Where here on utube somewhere.
@schazz50 I'm one of the ones that have the utmost respect for women...but I feel nowadays that there are not a lot of them that actually deserve it?!
I actually have a video of HAROLD & THE BLUE NOTES singing this song on SOUL TRAIN, but the quality is poor. If anyone ELSE has the video , please post.
harold melvin sang lead on to be true, teddys voice was more powerful than Melvin!s voice, more raspier, teddy joined the group as a drummer, teddy and melvin were great togather, it lets you know how great the tempts are to survive this long, when teddy the group never was the same, ruffin, eddie, dennis woodson, theo, bo, g.c. cameron street all left the tempts whatever reasons and that didn!t stop the group, great singers!
Isn't it interesting? Teddy was a drummer and an Aries? Marvin Gaye was a drummer, (I hear tell he was also shy) and also an Aries? When Marvin branched out from under other producers--out came a genius. Music was never the same (What's Goin' On is considered the first 'concept' LP). Same with Teddybear.
That's a trip, got Teddy in the back, knowing good and well, he was the real lead. Anyway, Too be true, that was smooth by Harold though. RIP Harold Melvin.
Both men made great music. The question is what do you want to hear and when do want to hear it? This song is good for Harold. Yet the group almost died with out Teddy. Great Post
there's such a nostalgia to songs like this. its like u can't help but think of the seventies when u were a kid. i kno it brings back memories of my mommy!
