Thanks ca5057, but unfortunately my PS3 is over a year old, meaning it's out of warranty. So Sony want to charge me £100 to fix it, which I'm not willing to pay. I'll try to clean the lens myself. If that doesn't work I'll have to try stripping the working parts to sell online. Hopefully that'll help me recover some of my wasted outlay.

My 40g PS3 stopped reading discs today. I Phoned Sony: they say it will cost £100 to fix. They denied that this is a common fault even though there are thousands of instances on the internet. My old PS1 and PS2s still work, yet Sony thinks it is acceptable for their extremely expensive PS3 to last less than 2 years before transforming into an expensive doorstop. I will not be buying Sony products in future. Their customer support is appalling. Sony should be ashamed.

It's your laser assembly, and it's hard for someone that is not fimilar with mechanics and electronics. This problem can be fixed by me and my wife, view my channel and you'll see why.

Yep I had the same problem except mine read dvd and music cd but not blu-ray , according to sony it's likely the laser has died in your case sony told me that if the laser reads dvd etc but not blu-ray it's likely the laser is ok but the drive controller is failing and guess what you cant buy them.

The 80gb is lying in my house somewhere:p but yeah, this problem is VERY rare so don't get discouraged from buying a ps3 just cos you've seen my problem. i have a similar problem to this, wel at time i insert the disc into the ps3 and it doesnt read, when it does appear i press x to continue and while it loading , it returns to the ps3 menu saying an error occured, and once the game works it freezes and doesnt load, can anyone help?

how cold is it in your house? mine won't read disks when its been just turned on while cold. but i let it sit for a few to warm up, pop in a disk and then it works :) i hope this helps some people

Same thing happened to me, ps3/40g. Purchased for Christmas 07, quit reading disk in june 08. Sony sent a replacement. In August 08 the replacement quit reading disks. The asshole customer service rep tried to tell me I was outside the 90 day warrenty for the replacement. Fucker. You don't get the full year warrenty if your system has been replaced. I will never buy another item from sony as long as I live. SHIT BIRD OUTFIT. CROOKS. LIERS
There is a special memory stick for the PS3 called SAN DISK MEMORY STICK DUO. This will save ur in-game saves, music, photos, and videos, etc. Ok, now we simply head over 2 the system settings and hit Restore System, CLick OK and choose the quick format option. This will only take afew mins. Now create a username. Then go 2 sign up at playstation network. If u want 2 retain ur online ID choose, No i will use my existing ID.Punch in ur email-address nd password nd ur done. Hope this helps.Thanks
Hi everyone, I had this same problem too, my PS3 wouldn't read any games, except for music and Blu-Ray movies. I literally tried everything and was upset.You may have 1 of the 3 problems. First, ur PS3's Blu Ray Disc drive died on u. Second, ur lens needs to be cleaned, third u need to restore the whole system.The best solution is 2 restore the PS3.If u have saved data that you dont want 2 lose like me, then simply buy a memory stick, which will cost you $30 at gamestore.

i found out that turning off the whole ps3 messes up the laser for some games. so i wouldn't shut off the whole system when its reading a game. i'll only turn it off from the front of the ps3.

yea the same thing just happened to me and i got a new game mlb 09 yesterday so it sucks having to wait like another month to get a new one. all video game consoles suck now. i never had a problem with my old school xbox and ps2 and all this new crap starts breaking all the time.

i have a similar problem to this, wel at time i insert the disc into the ps3 and it doesnt read, when it does appear i press x to continue and while it loading , it returns to the ps3 menu saying an error occured, and once the game works it freezes and doesnt load, can anyone help?

how cold is it in your house? mine won't read disks when its been just turned on while cold. but i let it sit for a few to warm up, pop in a disk and then it works :) i hope this helps some people

There is a little pin that finds the beginning of the disc. This pin is damaged. It costs like 10 cents at gamestop. GO GET ANOTHER ONE!

I bought my PS3 in March 08.
It's just developed this problem.
I phoned Sony (UK) up and told them about it.
They asked for my contact details, when I bought it and the serial number.
I told them I didn't have the receipt to which they said it didn't matter.
They have arranged to collect my PS3 from my house in three days and have estimated that it will take 5-10 days to return.
It's not costing me anything - so I don't know where the £150 fee that people are talking about came from...

Same thing happened to me, ps3/40g. Purchased for Christmas 07, quit reading disk in june 08. Sony sent a replacement. In August 08 the replacement quit reading disks. The asshole customer service rep tried to tell me I was outside the 90 day warrenty for the replacement. Fucker. You don't get the full year warrenty if your system has been replaced. I will never buy another item from sony as long as I live. SHIT BIRD OUTFIT. CROOKS. LIERS

Fixing it = Well its Easy First Take PS3 OF For Like 1-2 hours after that restore default Setting and then put in CD know start a Demo
Then Press The PS Button and Then Scroll Down Wait 1-10 sec ur CD Should Be Up Run CD And Enjoy

There is a special memory stick for the PS3 called SAN DISK MEMORY STICK DUO. This will save ur in-game saves, music, photos, and videos, etc. Ok, now we simply head over 2 the system settings and hit Restore System, CLick OK and choose the quick format option. This will only take afew mins. Now create a username. Then go 2 sign up at playstation network. If u want 2 retain ur online ID choose, No i will use my existing ID.Punch in ur email-address nd password nd ur done. Hope this helps.Thanks

Hi everyone, I had this same problem too, my PS3 wouldn't read any games, except for music and Blu-Ray movies. I literally tried everything and was upset.You may have 1 of the 3 problems. First, ur PS3's Blu Ray Disc drive died on u. Second, ur lens needs to be cleaned, third u need to restore the whole system.The best solution is 2 restore the PS3.If u have saved data that you dont want 2 lose like me, then simply buy a memory stick, which will cost you $30 at gamestore.

heyy i had an old 60gg ps3 but it broke and i installed 2 games cod4 and assasin creed. tthen i bought a new 40 gg ps3 and i wanted to reinstall cod4 and assasin creed but then i have to install for cod4 the 1.30 firm wall... i start the download it goes up to 16 % and then it stops!!!! then its says an error as occured. same thing for assasin creed now i cant plaay with both of these game its reaally annoying Can someone help me!!!!!!!thank god i bought mgs4:P

i found out that turning off the whole ps3 messes up the laser for some games. so i wouldn't shut off the whole system when its reading a game. i'll only turn it off from the front of the ps3.
