cont'd: Semenko ranked much higher than Plett re: fighting. Plett won 4/5 of his fights and Semenko lost maybe 2 in his best year. I will name the winners: Probert, Charlie Bourgois (Big tough D Flames licked up from St. L). Larry Playfair and Semenko had a real good one, and I would call it a draw. Both very tired.. Semenko and Larry both with a bit of a smile after the fight
@sparwood8 Oh no doubt, Semenko certainly had his role, as does every guy on an NHL roster. Plett also had 33 goals in 1977, they year he won the Calder Trophy as Rookie Of The Year. Semenko's best statistical year was probably 82-83, in which he had 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points, and was also +19. Very good numbers for an enforcer
@sparwood8 Well Plett was also a solid player who had over 220 career goals, not a talent-less goon like Semenko. Maybe the score didn't dictate them dropping the gloves, as Plett didn't dodge ANYBODY during his career and won FAR more than he lost
@jscottrockford Plett's best year, he had 38 g and 30 assists. His shot percentage was like 23% so he went ot the net well. Agreed good skill guy who could fight. Semenko's best season was like 13 plus 20assists, and he was 17% in shots which is good. Plett got a lot more ice time than Semi, and if Plett was an Oiler, hemight have been the off-winger for Gretzky and Kurri IF he could play left side. Semenko was a 3 liner, and one hell of a good deterrent for guys who would run 99 and Kurri
What an awesome era! Hockey is forever destroyed by too many Euros, too many rules against fighting & the pussification of the people running the league.
@Ihatebandwagonfans My friend you hit it on the head. These euro-finesse players make me sick. I grew up in this era, and to me fighting was part of the sport, the refs and the league allowed it. I gues we both have to agree that attendance is lower than ever, because of NHL brass and the pussy 170 lb. european players that could not take a punch from ELMO. Someone plz toughen up these kids. Bring back the Secords, Domi's, Pletts, Schnepts the tough guys. It makes the sport!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well it also helped Fraser that there was a big mass of humanity when he just dropped his gloves and started throwing punches. When Plett finally got his balance up against the boards, Fraser wanted no part and just held on until the linesmen got there
@rjst09 Plett's last year was the 87-88 season when he and the Bruins went to the Stanley Cup Finals against Edmonton, and Twist didn't make his NHL debut with the Blues until the 89-90 season. hence, they never fought
Tiger Williams pounded the crap out of Plett in the '82 playoffs which basically killed the Flames chances.....but the '82 Canucks pounded everyone that year....ask Grant Mulvey....LOL
@sparwood8 your comment makes ZERO sense. Plett in his career fought everybody there was to fight and won most times. Plett fought Behn Wilson numerous times, Clark Gillies, Holmgren, Curt Fraser, Probert, Jerry Korab. What is Semenko's resume against those guys? Got pounded by Wilson and Probert in embarrassing fashion and never fought ANY of the others. Look up Semenko's clips on here and he's either jumping some unsuspecting guy who can't fight, or getting beat up by anyone who can.
It's true....SEmenko was overrated as a fighter...he was really big and really ugly, and quite tough, but didn't scare true heavyweights..... if he had gone up against the '82 Canucks there were at least 4 guys who would have pounded him into submission.
@fastfootedone the '82 Canucks hmmmmm .... that was their Stanley Cup Final year against the Isles? Would that be Curt Fraser, Garth Butcher, Stan Smyl, Tiger Williams ..... maybe Jack McIlhargey?? I don't remember their roster all that well

Platt was a ragdoll for Behn Wilson, Al Secord, Joe Kocur, Bob Probert and Tont Twist.

Willi Plett by this time was past his prime. There was very few players including Dave Shultz that could take on Plett during his Atlanta days.

@Mortagne Wrong. Plett wanted nothing to do with Semenko. Plett good player, but a dirty s.o.b. Took out Brett
callighan's eye with his stick.

@Mortagne Shultz was silling, but not enthused by the prospect of taking on Plett. I read his book 'the Hammer' or whatever. Good reading
