  • @SinnFein4ever @yo dumb ass da mardi gras indians have been to a reservation. wht people dont understand is that this has beem going on since the 17hundres.

  • Those posers are NOT Native-American.

They have a lot of gall to go around calling themselves "Indians".

They're just more in a long line of people trying to cash in on Native American culture.

Let them show up on a reservation dressed like that, and they would get the shit beat out of them.

  • (@leeleonor:#YACHT:#).

  • Beautiful

  • i dont see any indians in this video :(

indians:a native or inhabitant of India or of the East Indies

    merrian webster

  • you PC hunters are obviously too ignorant to know that these Mardi Gras Indians call themselves exactly that. Not everything changes with time and I would find it hard to believe that a Native American would find this cultural tradition among African Americans in New Orleans, offensive. Most of you are probably a bunch of jackass Yuppies from the NorthEast or West Coast that know nothing about Mardi Gras, New Orleans, or the Mardi Gras Indians so shut the fuck up!

  • @rhythmicspeech Im native american and im fine with this. like he said there paying respect

  • @rhythmicspeech Precisely. Some posters here are horribly literal-minded and know absolutely nothing about New Orleans' wonderful and unique culture. To them, I recommend Les Blank's classic documentary film, "Always for Pleasure," which contains a good deal of material about the Mardi Gras Indians as they prepare for the big day.

  • @NanaNarcotic lol

  • they must be from the Shoe-Shiny tribe

  • wtf man these aren't indians, they're black native americans

  • we arnt in the 1600s anymore. call the "Indians" Native Americans please it gets really confusing. i wish the world just broke the habbit

  • Native Americans, not Indians...come on Natgeo!

  • 1:06 the stomach... 0_0

  • I always loved this. I was glad to hear the meaning and the origin being full blood Native. Totally respect them and love the colors and beauty of their costumes.

  • This brings so many happy memories. The late Big Chief Jolly. "Wild Tchoupitoulas gonna stomp some rump!" The Nevilles. My years in The Crescent City were among the happiest of my life, and sometimes I long to move back there, "K" or no. Happy Fat Toozdaze to you and yo momma!

  • @TakiyahYeira- not only is your statement ignorant and self hating , you sound like a racist troll. Why don't you wikipedia those terms then you can understand why some black people use them. You probably are too ghetto to realize how ghetto you truly sound. I know its been almost a year since you made your comment so go back and refresh your memory before you respond.

  • @Painfultruthforyou Dude? How can you say they are wasting there time? Im sure they like doing what they do. Also you are sitting on youtube because you are too lazy to do something else? Ain't that a waste of time? Tell me the TRUE definition of wasting your time.

  • holy shit

  • i dont see why any of this should have anything to do with job skills. what is good is not always rational. and if people find this beautiful, telling them theyre playing dress up as if their tradition means nothing, you get a big ol fuck you

  • And I meant to say learn bout da culture. But u still bout ah stupid mutha *#!;'!. I bet u look like ah deformed bell pepper uh.

  • @ painfultruthforu. You bout ah stupid mutha-. How dare u call these people uneducated. My great uncle was ah Indian chief and he was ah proud Creole man. R u even from N.O.? And if so u must b from da Garden District? Lean about da culture b4r u try to down play it. These suits cost almost 4000$ these people can't be to dumb. Oh yea... U bout ah stupid mutha /*#@". Tell dat to one of them. They would smack da da taste out ur mouth. Cause u bout ah stupid mutha*#!!*-

  • Actually there are white and black chiefs/indians and they put a massive amount of time and energy into their costumes/chants/dances etc.. Of course at the end of the day it's a bunch of adults wasting and insane amount of time playing dress-up because they're attention whores. Most of these people are poor uneducated illiterates and as there isn't really a job description or skill set required for "walking around in pretty costume and chanting made up nonsense" it's a good fit.

  • @Painfultruthforyou lol you discribed the pope in your quote.

  • @Painfultruthforyou that's a very ugly opinion you have there. why place so little value on culture and heritage ? is it really so cheap to you ?

if i get you right, you are suggesting they are wasting their time on this ??? time they could be spending working some soul-less McJob for minimum wage? fuck that. what they are doing has far more intrinsic value than money. get some soul my friend.

  • @Painfultruthforyou you talk as if you are a body with a soul...instead of the other way around. smh

  • @dancing88mike u must b from utah sum place lil boy talkn bout hood folk making up ah culture. Boy we from N.O.there isn't a city n da U.S with as much culture as New Orleans. U better get it rite lil boy

  • N N.O. Slaves were set free on sundays and holidays. Sum would go to a plot of land clld congo sqaure. Da Indians would join da slves. This led to slv rebelions sum led by da indians. So that led to Louisiana having da first largest free Black Population @da tm. So da native Creoles and Blck of New Orleans Mask as Indians to thank da Native indians of Louisiana. Lk Da Houma tribe and da Chakataw.

  • I c a lot of yall don't kno shit. This Mardi Gras indian thing been going on n New Orleans for over 100yrs. Da Natives Creoles and Black pay Respect to da native Americans dat stay on da Louisiana land at da time. So its not all native Americans they r paying respect to. This video was cut this is not da whole interview. So to all da dick heads who don't kno wht there talking about cause they don't undestand da culture, ride out

  • what the heck is this

  • Hood folks with no culture inventing their own.

  • Please.. make all your videos.. available in all countries..

esp. from Philippines.. I am a big fan of National Geographic Channel....

    please.. please.. please...

  • @welcome2my2ndlife so this is there way of showing there ancestors there respect so for u and that dumb ass indian who you showed this to u both need to learn your history about black indians before u post bull shit on youtube if u have mix blood in you you have mix blood in you and there is nothing to be ashamed about and we all know no race has 100% of there hold race in them we are all mix with something and please learn how to spell next time

  • @welcome2my2ndlife if ur dumb ass is going to post something at least know what u r talking about first of all dummy the african americans pay tribute to the american indians beacuse they hepled runaway slaves escape during those times of slavery when racial segregation was in full affect these runaway slaves married into the tribes they had families the runaway slaves begin to dress like them and dress their kids they had togather like them they taught each other there culture

  • "Culture" thee key word.

  • Rebellion is good... and questioning authority is even better :-)

  • i got confused, really.

  • is youtube being fuddled with ignorant shit talking loser geeks now?

  • @christianz2010

no, it's always been that way

  • @SadlifeProduction not when i started, they should make it mandatory to put your address and name to comment. maybe this litle fags would check themselves

  • Mardi Gras looks like fun!

  • Anybody who watches Tremé on HBO knows what this is all about....... they work hard all year on these costumes, each tribe's costumes are unique, and some suits can weigh up to 150 lbs each..... good show. Look up 'Indian Red'

  • @SadlifeProduction Thankyou for making just about the only positive comment on this great video.

Seriously, I expected that people who subscribe to NationalGeographic would be a little bit more culturally aware than this.

  • its called respect

  • Wtf dose this have to do with Native american culture?....

  • Oh for the love of god... INDIAns ... there's INDIA in it >.>

    This drives me crazy.

  • Those halloween customes are suppose to be Indian?

  • @triplezzz21 If you could spell costumes right your joke might be funny

  • Wow you found the most inarticulate person to explain this cultural practice.

  • @welcome2my2ndlife You have no right to say that you fat white kid.

  • Why are Black people always trying to be something but Black? They say we are Israelites, Moors, Egyptians, now Indians? LOL I'm Black and I call bullshit.

  • @TakiyahYeira their paying respect to the Natives, what do you want hu?

  • it's always good to see, even in the wards they pay respect to there culture. can't find that out here in tiburon, california. Nothing but white people with cadilacs, benzeos and there million dollar houses...and I'm one of them : (

  • At first when I read the title of the video, I thought it was talking about Indians in INDIA celebrating Mardi Gras..

  • @NanaNarcotic Haha I know, it's a bit misleading but "Indian" is still used as a legal term, I'm not sure about the US, but definitely is in Canada still.

  • @NanaNarcotic haha I get that but they've been called the Mardi Gras Indians for like EVER.It's to late to change the name

  • I'm sorry I just can't take this seriously. An American trying to keep the culture? That just cracks me up lol
