i worked with some explosives in the oilfield's. they said if you could stretch them from the east coast to the west coast and charge them they would make the trip in 15 seconds.
@Gluv22 Lesson Learned, dont be an idiot, it can cost you your life. I dont blame cars for he friends I have lost. He made a Choice my friends made choices, and they dies because of it. it sucks ass. Thats why it pays to have a brain.
So instead of removing the surface rust and replacing struts that were too corroded, they blew the thing up and built a new bridge, meaning they expended 80x the energy required for repair. Excellent thinking /sarcasm off
drove on this bridge everyday w my family in the 70's and 80's. My grandmother always prayed before she drove on it and sometimes even stopped traffic at the top of it with the metal grates. The good old days....
@failsafe3 i dont know who u are , but i kinda feel you. I always miss the old days where people were not so much bounded by the technology. Sometimes i just wish to die before humans turn in to robots :)
I miss the days when people will spend time together instead of spending time on facebook and internet. We are very close but still far at heart. There are so many things i want to say, but i just dont know here to start from :)
I'm sure the fish got the memo that there would be a bridge falling down on them. Cool to see the effects then the sound a few seconds later. What about the rest of it tho? Give them something to do next week I guess.
The Jamestown Bridge opened in 1940 and closed in 1992. It remained an eyesore for 14 years after that. The Jamestown Bridge was 2 lanes of traffic. It carryed RT-138. It was much too narrow to the point that not even 2 school buses could pass one another. Only 2 surviving men who constructed the bridge were on hand to see it demolished. The trusses now sit at the bottom of Narragansett Bay to act as a reef for little fishies. The current bridge is called Jamestown-Verrezano Bridge.
If this is the bridge across the York river, I swear.. When I went there in spring 2010, there was a canter liver there, but this might be somewhere else anyways. Just to ask, is this Virginia?
@ziggerification well if they demolished it over land they would have to take it all apart to get it away from the water and then put it back together just to demolise it again. which is kinda pointless and time consuming.
Steel bridges are a lot more expensive in their upkeep, they need to be painted continuously with water and rust proofing paint. I'm sure the awesomely engineered concrete bridge has twice the lanes, pedestrian and cycle paths, will last 50 times longer with minimal attention..............so why didn't they keep the pretty fairytale bridge again??
What was wrong with that bridge. Looked structurally sound to me. I guess the new bridge behind is replacing it. Still, couldn't they have found some use for it?
Stupid ass comments like that tell people that you don't have any common sense or professionalism that would be expected from the people who work in demolition.
but theres so many people that come to watch you could make it even more fun, i mean if it was an option go for it but if you could not do it then dont
Just love all the tree hugging comments. The steel will break down, back into iron ore and return to the earth where it came from, get a life. Y'all drive cars? You're polluting, stop it...and when you do, all the earth derived steel in the car will rust back into the earth too, cause it's probably a POS.
The Titanic, which sunk in 1912, and various other ships and planes that have either crashed or sunk into the ocean, did so involuntarily. This bridge demolition was a choice. A choice that probably weighed on the more expensive, yet environmentally-friendly alternative of dismantling.
