I too heard this as a child and now at 73 it sends chills up my spine ,a sensual guilty feeling that I should be alone when I listen to it,thank you Charles for this.
Wow!! Mr. Trenet was a fine and dignified gentleman. His knowledge, style, class and his clear understanding of the music which he interpreted is absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful video. Amazing. Many thanks, J.
"Trenet wrote the lyrics of "La Mer" on a train in 1943 while travelling along the French Mediterranean coast, returning from Paris to Narbonne. He supposedly wrote the song in ten minutes, on toilet paper supplied by SNCF.
This movie, besides its great musical score, has a very original script that parallels today's technology in a way never done before. Its simplicity and surprising originality shines against major Hollywood productions. If you are into developing, writing, directing or producing, look into this. A study in innovative cinematographical production that works!!.
@excess4all Naja, ich denke solche Sender wirst Du nicht so leicht finden. Das sind Stücke aus den 1940ern und 1950ern. Vielleicht findest Du was unter "Mega"-Evergreens :)
" Les chansons populaires" , uebersetzen sollst Du net . Kennst du Tino Rossi ? er hat "Petit Papa Noël" im 1942 gesungen ,es gibt auch ein video zu dem song.
This original version is way better than any version sung in English. Comes across as far more sincere. The English versions are not even translations from the French, just a different song grafted onto the tune, doesn't work as well.
Les interprètes des chansons n'ont même pas eu le temps de se rhabiller. Ils étaient tout nus sur la route, avec Trenet devant, seul, magnifique" Léo Ferré
Inoubliable ! Iéve hearad for the first time when I was 12 or there abouts ! It haunts me to this day . I even bought a boat because of it. Je vous remerci infiniment, M.Trenet !
L'époque où la musique ne parlait pas forcément que de sexe et d'argent. Les paroles n'ont rien de compliqué, mais c'est cette simplicité qui rend cette chanson super! :)
Everytime I hear this song, together with the miraculous Edif Piaf, I am transported once again to France.. this is the heart of france beating, if you havent been, do it!!!!! milou
At five or six years' old I first heard this as background music to a puppet show on early television, and never forgot it. I'm 63 now, and this song still brings me to tears and joy at once.
Magical. I first heard part of this version as part of some advertising on television. I was so take by the beauty, the melody, of this mans voice.
Now that I have heard the full version I am absolutely stunned that I feel myself drift away with the music. I don't speak French and when I read the translation I felt like I was souring with the angels. Truly wonderful.
you can play over and over again without losing any of the attraction of the song. I long to hear La mer regularly as you can long tor a nice pasta when you have been away for it for awhile.
