"Trenet wrote the lyrics of "La Mer" on a train in 1943 while travelling along the French Mediterranean coast, returning from Paris to Narbonne. He supposedly wrote the song in ten minutes, on toilet paper supplied by SNCF.

This original version is way better than any version sung in English. Comes across as far more sincere. The English versions are not even translations from the French, just a different song grafted onto the tune, doesn't work as well.

Magical. I first heard part of this version as part of some advertising on television. I was so take by the beauty, the melody, of this mans voice.

The orchestra playing is so moving.

The sincerity of Trenet and his simplicity is

so attractive. Probably one of the records that

you can play over and over again without losing any of the attraction of the song. I long to hear La mer regularly as you can long tor a nice pasta when you have been away for it for awhile.
