the post below yours actually answers it all. Affirmitive action! HIs GPA is well below columbia's mean GPA, furthermore since he said it's in a low-income neighborhood that will mean it's school is less competitive, so that 3.5 could be a lower GPA elsewhere. His SAT and ACT are well below columbia's standards. He's in a poor neighborhood, so I doubt he has many opportunities for great ECs. So unless his essay was the best ****ing essay ever written, AA FTW.
