Thank you for this. It will help me know what to expect. My 3 year old son has just been diagnosed. It complained of pain in his leg for quite a while but it only showed up when he was tired so we overlooked it. Now he is limping, which led to the diagnosis.
@carrottmom Be strong, maybe join a support group it helped me the first couple of years after we found out. It's been 8 close to 9 years now. God's strength and love be with you.
@davemustainee2 would like to know why you say this...apparently you have problems with your Perthes or did not receive the treatment you needed. I am sorry you feel this way.
I hope Tanner is progressing well. I would just like to tell you that I had Perthes as a child in England during the 1950's. I was five years old when diagnosed and the treatment then was complete bed rest with full leg cast for TWO years! So I was in hospital all that time and came out with a brace for six months, then crutches....however at the end of that time I was okay and now at age 65 I still don't have any problems with my hips. Treatment has come a long way since then! Good luck Tanner
Keep up the good work with the video. I am now going to school to be an Pa. I would like to work in an orto office to help kinds with perthes. I had to deal with it and so many others need help. Thanks
i will give you one piece of advise, treat him like a normal kid, do not baby him, stop all the whinning and crying and make him do things for himself. if you treat him different he will feel different, and the more you complain the more he picks up on it and he starts to complain. good luck
i hope things are going well. i went thru it as a kid in the 70's. and my son is going thru it right now. as someone who has dealt with perthes all my life in one why or another, at 39 i still play softball 5 to 6 nights a week, i love to ski, basketball 3 nights in the winter, and work const. and not one time after my cast came off have i ever had any discomfort. so we dicided to go thhe same way with my son alex. we took him to the shrine hospital, they speacialize in perthes. good luck
Just wanted to say thank you all for your comments on my video and on Tanner. We appreciate the prayers and concern.
As of May of 2009, Tanner has been off of crutches and the use of the chair. He has some pain and walks with a limp. He does have regrowth (some) . It takes a long time. As some of you are quite aware of. Please know we pray for everyone perthes has touched each night. Thanks and I hope to update this video soon. Tanner's Mom...Alice
Great job. I too have gone through with perthes. It's quite the obstacle, and I can see Tanner is a very strong willed child. God bless you and your family.
God bless you for sharing this. My son is 7 and was diagnosed in March2009. We are on crutches now, but trying to decide betweeen prtiecasts and surgery. Thank you so very much for sharing Tanner's story. We needed to watch this, my son and I and we understand more now. God Bless and best wishes~~
I did the casts. I'm 21 now living in Philadelphia and walk about 2 miles a day on concrete, work out 4 days a week. I recommend LOTS of physical therapy to keep hip muscles strong, Pilates works well, and swimming. Good luck!
hey guys, I have Perthes of left hip, I am 21 years old, diagnosed at age 5, had surgery to remove the chipped bone and stuff, then had to stay in hospital for a few months. Then wore a brace on my legs that kept them wide apart for 1 year which sucked.
Since then It has given me no problems, I run 4 times a week, and workout in the gym with weights every day. I take care of it though, minimize impact such as beach running and things like that I recommend swimming for anyone who has it.
Perthes is a hard diease to live with. I was diagnosed when I was 10. It was in both of my hips. I had 13 operations on my left and 2 on my right. I was told that I would have to have a total hipreplacement when I was 18. I made it till 31 with my left hip. Right is still going strong. Total hip is great. threw it all you have to stay vibrant happy. Great video let me know how Tanner is. chad
I know its tough to live with this disease, i was diagnosed when i was four, i was in the hospital in traction for 2 weeks, and the doctors put me in braces for 2 years, they called it a "miraculous" recovery, i was to the point of hip replacement, now i'm 22 and in the army, all bones intact haha. It will cause minor complications thoughout his life, but he seems to be a very vibrant young kid, i will pray for him :).
Hello sir ... I'm from Colombia 15 years and 9 years ago I was diagnosed with this rare disease, I have 3 hip surgery, my pain is minimal I can not dance, running, jumping ... any sport .... I would like to know more about tanner. NICE.
My son got dignosed last August, he is one year junger than you. It is great to see you are done and doing so good. You give as hope that everything will be OK.
My 5 year old daughter has Perthes and full head involvment, we have been very lucky that she hasn't suffered much pain, she was diagnosed 19 months ago and still no sign of re growth! We have more xrays to come on the 10th of feb to see where were at. Tanner you look great and i've enjoyed watching the video xXx
Tanner, I'm 20 years old and I too have Perthes Disease. It sucks and it hurts and you are going to want to scream at the top of your lungs sometimes. However, I have become an Eagle Scout, I have hiked over 600 miles of the Appalachian Trail (with at least 60 lbs on my back) hiked 100 miles in Olympia National Park in WA and summited Mauna Loa in Hawaii just to name a few. KEEP UP WITH HIP EXCERCISES AND PHYSICAL THERAPY!! Even if it's just riding your bike a couple times a week.
Casts when I was young. I overexerted myself hiking recently and the muscles lost a lot of strength while I was off of it. I do physical therapy now and try to swim and work out at the gym to keep my core strong because the hips rely on those muscles a lot. I've found that Pilates help though. What about you?
i also had perthes when i was 7 im 12 now and im back to my sport im very i play traveling softbal soccer and tae kwon doe i have my days my hip is sore but im back to my life i had the osteotomy surgery after a doctor vistit at akron childrens hospital in ohio they were very nice when i had my surgery i was in a cast for weeks then had a walker then did physical therapy then a year or two later i got released to go back to all my sports
ive got perthes. the good that really does come out of it is how mentally strong you get. jus be strong and keep your faith in your lord and savior Jesus Christ and everything will be ok.
I cried at this video. I also had Perthes as a child, I'm now 29. They did not find mine until the disease had run it's course, so I had no early treatment. I have had 5 surgeries in the last 5 years, and finally a total hip replacement. The pain is there everyday, but if there is a good thing that came out of it.... it makes you a stronger person.
Tanner looks like an amazing boy! Let him know he is not alone, there are others out there just like him. He can do whatever he sets his mind to!
I had Perthes as a child. I was on crutches for months and also had to have a home traction unit in my bed to sleep in. It's nearly 20 years later and I still limp from time to time, I don't have great mobility in my hip and it does get sore if I do too much... but life is just the same for me as it is anyone else. I wish Tanner and your family luck! Thanks for posting this video and sharing your story!
Good luck Tanner!!! it is so much better when you get to this stage. Take things easy and you will be fine. I had perthes as well as my brother and we are both doing well as adults. There isn't anything we can't do if we put our minds to it! Have fun but remember it is still healing and you need to make sure it grows back strong for the future! Wonderful video and your such a handsome boy!
This video is awesome because i too have LCPD i found out i had it when i was 6 i rember all the things in this video, it gets better later on i am now 13 and every thing is over, the cast, the wheelchair, the cruches, the cane, all of it. Mine stared out the same way pain i the knee and so one. I still have to go to the doctor every year though.
Well done -- you have a great gift for photos and editing. I have a child with perthes and so it's touching to see how other families are coping. Thumbs up to both you and Tanner for your great spirit!
