He also appeared opposite another screen hero in 1983's Never Say Never Again as an assassin out to kill Sean Connery's James Bond in a rather brutal fight in a health club. Appeared in a number of other films, too.
the greatest judo master masahiko kimura did wrestling matches. But he only did it to get enough money to save his wife who needed expensive cancer medication.
Met Pat Roach at a tournament in Cheltenham back in 79. I was still a lad but not small by any means, but by the side of Roach I felt like a minnow - he must have been at least 6'6" and as wide a barn door. I could never understand why he played a West country Yokel in "Aufwiedersein Pet" when he was a genuine Brummy ?

Right I'm here, I'm a Wrestler & the wrestling I do is VERY REAL, NO FAKENESS about what I do, if I put you in a sleeper hold you'll go out like a light, wanna come try, by all means RedCloud2008 says BE MY GUEST!!!!!!!!!
People who don't know do not want to know, and when they find out, they don't care it's fake. More importantly, whether they want to know or not, whether they care or not, they don't need some fucking scrote like you posting stupid crap on Youtube just to satisfy your own desperate need for attention. Piss off.
European Catch was based on the old British Wigan/Lancashire style. Both used to be legit, but, by the 1980s, it was all worked. This match is definitely worked.
To be honest, I don't think there's been a real competitive catch wrestling match for a few decades now.
British wrestlers did seem to be out of shape compared to the Americans. However technique wise the british were miles ahead.Roach and roberts were 2 of top heavy weights back in the 70s and 80s.
One of the reasons was that the UK rings were usually boxing rings - Roach himself would never bodyslam an opponent at the Royal Albert Hall: it would have been like throwing them on concrete. Also, all those moves are just acrobatics, not 'serious' wrestling.
Nothing like two older, slightly out-of-shape Brits beating the shit out of each other in the ring. Look at Pat Roach dish out those uppercuts starting at 3:43. Roberts winds up with his head on his chest! Then the punches that knock him out starting at 4:51. Nice.
It was good for its time. It's a bit silly to view them with a modern mindset. A bit like calling Jerry Lawler shit because he only did punches - but in Memphis in the 70s and 80s, he was a fucking god.

I think the main difference is 'INVENTIVENESS'
You can see both these guys know all the moves, but rarely use them. ie. not one suplex, bodyslam, belly to belly, knee drop etc.
British wrestling lacked the dynamics that the Yanks later used but, at this time in the states, it was pretty much the same as this.
ps.If Roach had wanted, he could've been a big name in the US, he had the size AND ability1
