Actually, engines don't need oxygen to run. Combustion requires oxygen but that can be remedied by lugging an oxygen tank along. But fundamentally, you're right. No space missions with current jet fighters.

one reason why they haven't is because in every ace combat game i've played (in fairness only 3 :P) there are

a) fictional superweapons/flying command stations etc, which would be awesome yet hard to make anywhere near believeable in ww2

b) fictional countries. change it for real ones and they're sorted :P

or better still, they make a time travel one... one timesplitters where you fly in different time zones etc
