Sweet, I'm torrenting the movie now. I've read the book a few times, such a good portrayal of these slippery so-and-sos who pretend they're full of honour but say whatever the winning side wants to hear.
I watched this film at the cinema when it was first released and it was a very popular film at the time. I also bought the video when it came out and have watched it every few years or so (although I am biased as Omar Sharif is one of my favourite actors). Would love to see him in The Burglars again, but it is quite expensive to buy on Amazon.

An excellent movie no doubt with a terrific casting. There is however one blig flaw in the plot. German generals were NOT the only one to wear the red stripes (0:11)! Officers from the general staff also wore the red stripes (actually, at 0:48, Col. von Stauffenberg should also wear the distinctive mark). As such, theoritically, the killer could also have been a G.S officer. But it does not change that it's a hell of a good movie.
I can't believe the lauditory comments this uninspired drek is receiving here. Sanity must prevail. The production is lavish. The cast is stellar. O'Toole is excellent at catatonia. There is no plot of any value, no mystery, no intrigue, no puzzle to solve. You will only keep watching to see whether your initial reaction to this (that it's crap) is actually correct. It is!!!!
dude you did this... nice... i love this movie..... im a huge WWII gammer both computer and minnies and the safe and lovable HEX.. <old schoolers know what i mean....:)...> freaking the scope of the story is epic and you captured that well with what you though were clips to promote the movie... so TWO THUMBS UP and dude defenetly rolled box cars on this one.... <to us old schoolers thats a good thing :)...> cheers all and keep smoking and joking
I bought this film for £2.50 only because I thought it was going to be a laughable b-movie. I actually enjoyed every minute of this film, I cannot see why it is not mentioned or praised more often, I'd never heard of it before seeing it in the shop but I am very glad I bought it.

the trailer seems to give the answer away, because when the subject of murder or treason is mention, it cuts to the same actor.
