To be taken seriously the State Dept of Consumer Affiars must index for inflation the "500 dollar max exclusionary rule" for the unlicensed self-employed, This law was minted in 1977, (B & P Code 7028) and if Jerry Brown and the Labor Unions who wrote this piece of trash today that minimum would be over $1800.

Until then the CSLB can't be operating in the public's best interest. No arrest powers, not officers, no legal training and that's why they need the CHP to help write citations onsite!

How come no one questions lawyers fees?.

If lawyer tells you he has to do 25 hours work at $150 to $550 per hour plus filing fees and charge you tens of thousands of dollars for mere 2 hours of typing( done by some paralegal in lawyers office), then no one questions it.

If Government is to tell people what to charge for such a dangerous work then the government should do that to everyone, not just to working class

I'm a C-7 contractor, and I see a lot of contracts go away, taken by people from Mexico without license or work permit. CSLB should do more sting operations down south. I don't see the use of having a license, everyone is doing a lot of work without any license!

A B C's of being a licensed contractor (the quick and sleazy way)

A) Go to one of those "contracting schools"

B) Have someone sign your 4 year work experience paper (regardless of how much experience you have...we all know 4 years is PLENTY of time to know everything about construction).

C) Take and pass the State exam, it will be almost identical to the tests they tell you to read over and over in the "school".

Voila! You are now a contractor.

How about going after homeowners who use the owner/builder permit process to circumvent legitimate contracting, bust them for failure to comply with worker's compensation laws.

What is the basis of the less than $500.00 mark anyway? In these economic times maybe they should raise the bar a little bit.

Everybody's guilty. It start with cheap customers, who wants to have it done for almost for free(some group of people are notorius for this). Technician wants to stick it to the next customer he sees and gets greedy, the board is not always an angel either, they are profitting from all of this. That's what happens when everyone is broke with this stupid economy.

i have paid 400 to the board 2 times and had the application rejected for checking the wrong box or criminal record issues. the test is stupid easy... my brother had me turned in after i fired him for using meth on my job. so now i have the test done, live print scan done, and i sent the ap in without money to make sure the board doesn't say i fucked up again and adsorb my money. the guys who say that licensed contractors should be checked just as much and licensed guys are right. lots of hacks.

Hey CSLB I'd like You to do this more often specially in the city of San Francisco. Used to be a licensed,bonded and insured roofing contractor and I can tell You there are so many unlicensed contractors who don't give a f.....! about been honest and they are still working.

Please enforce the law.

I can agree that any one licensed or not can be dishonest- the difference is... A licensed contractor is required to have insurance and a bond to guarantee fiscal compensation for faulty work or fraud- should you be awarded any.

Exactly! This has nothing to do with skill or trade experience. It's about fraud in which case someone doesn't need to be licensed to do. It's amazing how many dishonest LICENSED contractors there are out there. I'm in the drain business and I can't believe how many licensed contractors try to, and do, fraudulently sell things to people that they DO NOT need. It is definitely a holier than thou attitude.

As a Contractor in good standing with the State for 20+ years..The Service Industry Contractors that do work inside that 3 day Right to cancel/Emergency repair need to be regulated by a seperate division CSLB and pay special fees to support and regulate it! I dont like the idea of more goverment but in this case it is nessary! and if they should catch them screwing a senior 65+ years old triple the fines!!!!!!

yes and no,,,, but if the water supply lines leaking, furnace not working, roof leaking, etc. you just want the poor people to go with out? Look, if the customer wishes to get the work done, then so be it, just like the no cooling off period when you buy a car. A customer ahs the right to pick and choose the contractoras so does the contractor, but at many times, if the contractor wants to take the risk then so be it. California & work-comp is screwing my company as it is.

I walked across the street from one of my projects and watched 2 guy's from the biggest scumbag's ever GEORGE BRAZIL PLUMBING Trying to Screw a blue-hard old woman out of $2500.00 bucks for a new pressure regulator and 10' of new water main that she didn't need all she needed was a gate Valve replaced w/a ballcock valve! they are the BIGGEST PIECE OF $HIT I HAVE EVER SEEN! In the first place, I'm glad the state's doing something. All three were just posing as "Electrical contractors" and were really just common thieves. The only thing wrong is that the crooks know that these sting's aren't done very often, they've been screwing people for years without getting caught. The public should do some homework before choosing anyone to work on their home, checking for a license is a first start. Check with NECA for qualified electrical contractors in your area.

What a joke is this the best sting CSLB can do. These technicians have a right to charge what ever the market deems viable just like that tub of 12 dollar popcorn at the movies. If there diagnosis is in-correct there guilty of being a lousy electrician. I would have sold a Panel Replacement 5K instead of a measly breaker or troubleshoot!!!
