I love that this has turned into a help desk for people getting into metal. XD I started out with typical rock then went to heavier stuff through like Alice cooper then it just got heavier til Trivium (crusade is friendliest album) and from there I now listen to any metal that takes my fancy but I do dislike Metallica (no shouting at me please XD). Ok so they invented thrash but they're not doing anything with it just standing still. Obscure sub genres are fun. I recommend Alestorm. XD

iron maiden is a good place to start as an intro into metal. they helped form the genre during the 80's and still are coming out with albums. their singer doesn't really growl when he sings, which will make the transition from top 40 stuff to metal easier.

It all depends. Metal has so many different genres. I love hair metal personally, such as Poison and Winger: but I also appreciate Power Metal such as Dio and Maiden. If you like musicianship, but still want something catchy, I'd say your best bet is Dokken or Loudness. If you want pure musicianship then you'd probably enjoy shred. Start with Yngwie Malmsteen for this. Just listen to anything you enjoy and try not to worry so much about it's "category". Music is music.

Thrash- Iced Earth is better than Metallica, imo

Power- Firewind owns, Angra, Sonata Arctica, and Stratovarius aren't far behind. Power Metal is also considered the most 'freindly' form of metal so start there.

How are they terrible? They are almost different genres. DragonForce are definitely more videogame-oriented. And besides their genius melodic guitars, hate to say it but all of DragonForce are extremely talented... the keyboardist is unmatched on his keytar, the bassist can keyboard and shred (bass and guitar) as well as any professional power metaller, and I'd like to see Slipknot's drummer double-bass through ten 7-minute songs without a break.

DF is great live. Keep in mind that cell phones have shitty mikes, and that the other "official" live vids are about 6 years out of date, and in general everyone has their off days. Take it from me, if you would. I've seen them twice and couldn't be more happy with their performance. Not to mention the fact that they're one of the most fun and interactive live bands PERIOD.
