today i got my first deep tissue massage...and it was a little painful. is it normal? i work on my feet all day and im stressed most of the time and my muscle are tense.
yeah its normal, the body is just adjusting and reacting to the massage, it takes a while for the pain to subside. Did your therapist mention this BTW?
It's interesting that she mentions a lunge as a bad thing. I've only learned this olecranon technique from the same side, coming in on a bow stance and positioning yourself to face the client's opposite foot... and bracing your elbow with fingerpads just superior to your elbow so you can control how deep your tool is going. Strength from the legs, not the back or the shoulder. But if it works with no pain this way for folks, it's all about the healing...
I see confidence which a great attribution for a demonstrator. Her body mechanic, well, it is up to her if she feels comfortable leaning over the client. However, improper body mechanic eventually can lead to lower and upper back discomfort.
i dont know but i bet if i take a closed fist to her low back she'd jump of my table. it just looks like she's bending way too much. lunge wouldn't work....when you're perpindicular to the table like that you'd have to use horse riding stance and even then you're supposed to keep your back straight. not bending over the client like that.
Wish I had instruction like this at my school! I have learned more watching video's than I have at the massage school where I am paying a pretty penny.
Do you have different instructors on every MOD or the same teacher?
Either way, its good to learn new techniques that may be appliable to the client's needs.
Besides, nobody said that only one technique works all wonders nor is one technique above the other, there are numerous styles to choose from. Yet follow this motto, 'work smarter not harder' If a technique works and prevents RSI then use it, no?
I like her style. She is very caring and thorough.

RSI?
Yeah, having poor body mechanics and table mechanics can lead to RSI. Good point!

she's going to end up trashing her low back if she keeps bending at the waist over the table.....

I wonder how well she's using her body mechanics. I can't see her stance so I'm not sure if she's using the horse or the lunge.

It looks like she is using the horse stance by the looks of her hips touching the table, LordDivineFist.
