my gut feeling after listening to peter gabriels 2 album like yours was pretty lukewarm. but i really freaking love "melt", and the first one. great stuff.
@dereckvon Same. I've got up to So on vinyl and then everything else on at least cassette or CD. I'm excited for New Blood. Also, the German albums are so funny. Games Without Frontiers has great drama, but it's too bad that the lyrics don't quite make sense. You, my friend, have amazing taste. :) Watching your Genesis videos now. :D
The Security vinyl and remastered CD sound great to to me. I'm not sure if you have ever heard the original Security CD. But the sound quality is just terrible. So quiet and weak. Worst quality I have ever heard on a cd. I dont know if my disc is defunct or what. But its not good lol. I'm very happy to have the remastered CD sounds loud and clean its great. I dont understand why he reissused his albums on CD twice. 2002 with jewel cases. 2010 with digipacks....
Very Very nice Dereck, really enjoyed this one great collection wow. I just got 1 Car today for 12$ kinda exspensive u think?? I agree with you entirely about UP and Scratch. Some people absolutely adore Scratch, which is great but Its def not my favorite. Its the other way around for Security. Not a big fan of Birdy... Passion and OVO are breath taking in my opinion. US has got to be my favorite! Haha hell ya walkman NO I-pod thats the way to go man! GREAT vid, Cant wait for New Blood Oct 10!
@dwc311 Thanks for commenting, Gabriel is so enriching. he has so much in his music for each of us to connect to. Looking forward to New Blood as well and loved the show. Did you see the tour?
Need to check out Genesis and Peter Gabriel!! Very interesting he has German versions where he sings in German,I had no idea folks did that, would think though...Touched his leg, very cool! Love your artwork you put on that 12"!! Those bootlegs are all so rad too! New riders are rad too I think! Great post, just showed me all I've never known about him! Thanks for sharing!!
For a newbie to Peter Gabriel's solo stuff, which would be a good starter album to get the best impression? I've read around and "So" is looking like it's considered (critically) the best.
I always loved PG (and Genesis in fact); you have an amazing collection! I didn't care for 'up' but I must def listen to 'scratch my back', sounds interesting, thanks for sharing Dereck!
Excellent video and excellent collection! I so agree with you about his third album and also about Up. Your copy of Birdy is in much better shape than mine! Your foreign pressings and boots are also very cool! Don's have any of those. I'm really jealous of your vinyl copy of Us. I can't find it anywhere! It has become a bit of a Holy Grail album for me (although I do have it on CD.) I'll be seeing him in Milwaukee, later in June. Looking forward to your thoughts on the show you'll be seeing.
@EoLoVoX I'm psyched about seeing the latest tour with the orchestra. Hopefully there will be some vinyl for sale at the shows. Yes, I haven't come across vinyl copies of Us or Up since I purchased mine. Mr. Gabriel still rates very highly in my house.
Up is an album that I haven't been able to get yet. It was $80 i think when is was released on Classic records. Now that it's out of print, you just don't see them. Up is an album that I absolutely fell in love with and loved the Growing Up Live dvd that contained material from Up.
Great Gabriel collection man! Very jealous of Up and Us.
I love Gabriel's music. I have lots of his cds and live DVD's and they are awesome. I just got his 3rd solo album on vinyl and it's one of my favorites. I got the PG's era of Genesis albums in surround sound on DVD and it sounds amazing. Love your videos !!
Dereck, Dereck I know you spoke highly about Us, but would you suggest to someone to buy the album Up? I do not have it and it is pricey. I do not want to buy it unless I will listen to it more than once or twice like my other Gabriel LP's. Should I add 'Up' to my vinyl want list in my notebook?
@Paneeks1960 It is pricey and unless you want a sense of completeness I don't see it as essential. I waited for well over a year before I finally bought the one vinyl copy in Omaha I had ever seen. And on top of that the store did not reduce the price even though it had been there for awhile.
Dereck, Beautiful collection as always. Well spoken and informative. Don't have too much Gabriel. The way you feel about Peter Gabriel is the way I feel about Harry Nilsson.
You can't compare the two, but maybe one day I'll show my Nilsson collection. Still missing two albums though, so later for sure. Cross your fingers... no thumbs down!
The security tour was the first one I saw also Dereck. I saw him at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in NY. I had to hold him over my head at the Great Woods show for the So tour. He had all white on and when he was passed back on stage after Lay Your Hands On Me he had nothing but his trousers left on~He was also thinner and less heavy back then. The Us and Up LP's are quite collectible nowadays. The breakup he went through with Rosanna Arquette led to some great music. Very cool~
Thanks for posting this. I've found myself mildly obsessing over Peter Gabriel lately, I need to find more. His music from the 80's really reminds me of my childhood. Have you heard his cover of Bon Iver's "Flume?" Beautiful.
honor and righteousness!!
that song "time table" popped into my mind XD
"a time where honor meant much more to a man than life"

@TheBlackhawkSniper I would suggest starting with Security. It is a masterpiece. So is his most critically acclaimed.
