Far-left American atheists have always held a soft spot in their hearts for Kim Jong Il. The radical left looked up to him as a mentor and hoped to duplicate his success in the United States. Far left activist Cornell West is quoted as saying "He was an inspiration to a changing America. He will be sorely missed."
Classic soundtrack. ITV showed The Point from 92-99 every New Year's Day and i'd disappear upstairs to get lost in my own world. But it's gotta be the Hoffman version; Ringo was terrible!
I loved this as a teenager, me and my 8 sisters & brothers! "The Point,' I gave this to my little ones, now grown & gone away. Particularly my youngest now graduating from law school; he stil loves it! Seems very apropos right now. Here's some trivia: When it first was shown on TV Dustion Hoffman was the narrator, not Ringo Starr. Trying to find the original is impossible! I actually feel that the original is better with Hoffman's voice. It's still wonderful. Especially this song.
As a child my father was a huge fan of Ringo Star (and the beatles). Of course I had to see this as a child and so happy that I did. The christmas before my father's death I purchased the soundtrack for him and it was one of the last gift's I had given him. I will never forget the joy and excitement when I gave it to him. He couldn't believe I found it and the movie on DVD. Thanks to this movie and Harry Nillson for giving me some wonderful memories of my father.
@Cocagirl77 Wonderful story, thank you for sharing :) I have this on vhs somewhere, and have the original vinyl soundtrack. Loved it as a kid, and still do.
This brings back so many memories. I'm so glad my parents played this for me and my sisters when we were younger. My 28th birthday was on Tuesday and some day when I have kids of my own I will sit them down and put this record on the turntable for them to enjoy just as I did. It's so good to read so many nice comments here. I know you all feel the same!!
This was my favorite album as a kid. It got to the point that I'd ask my parents if I could use the record player, and they'd say, 'As long as you play something other than the Point."
im only 17, but i remember watching this movie more then 10 years ago, and listening to the album and one weekend at the cottage my uncle was playing these songs, it reminded me on how much i missed all of this :P
My first exposure to contemplate the circle of life. Great lesson from music. [ when your young! ]The whole cartoon had a point! Now they just blow stuff up, & destroy the bad guy w/ the round head. "obliotron"
My brother who was 13 years older had the album which got passed on to me. I own the CD to this day. Where did you find the original movie all I can find is the newer one with Ringo!
@Maxthecatisnumber1 Strangely, everyone tells me that the Ringo version was the original!! I can remember seeing it for the first time when it first aired in `69 or `70 and it had Allan Thicke doing the narration NOT Ringo!!
@chrispizzo I remember watching it myself!! I'm pretty sure it was on ABC, and i'm almost sure it was Alan Thicke. Harry narrates it on his album and, it just seems to me that he said a few lines differently on the record than how they were said in the original movie.
Why your comment was removed, I don't know. It's certainly not the least bit offensive to anyone but the Amish.
@RedVynil Ringo narrated the original -the film (he is also the voice of the father). Nilsson and Ringo were great friends. Thicke narrated it the 3rd time it was on TV. It was also narrated on TV by Dustin Hoffman, and again by some guy I can't remember.
@phoebexanne When was it on the third time, then? The ONLY time I ever saw it on t.v. was around 1970! I got the album for Christmas about a year later. Had I not seen the show, I would've never known about the album.
Harry was friends with all of The Beatles, as far as I know. At least/mostly John and Ringo.
Mike Lookinland was the voice of Oblio, he was the youngest of the three boys on The Brady Bunch at the time. Paul Frees was The King and a few others.
There is a new cd release with 10 minutes of different versions of some songs like this one....very cool! why don't the networks oor cable channels play this beautiful animation?
@Brittt3000 I think the point of this song is that you're not the only one who has troubles. In fact, in the grand scheme of things, your troubles are hardly there at all, as the world (the ocean) can absorb them like nothing.
I vaguely remember this as a kid, but I totally forgot the song. I thought it sounded familiar since I've been a fan of the Belly version for over a decade, never actually knowing it was a cover until now. Ah memories :)
Back when I was a kid, before I owned a CD player, my parents gave me a Record player, and gave me this record. I listened to it constantly. My favorite song on the entire album was this song. It really puts everything in perspective.
@MrFunsockz me too!!! We are so lucky to have been born in a time when we had entertainment that didn't talk down to us as children. Now the Grimms Tales would be considered too violent. This song is actually a part of me. I don't have a record player these days but I have the record displayed in my room. I live by all the lesons taught in The Point. A work of art!

This song has applied in some very special and difficult times for me, from 1971, and through today. Today, it helps me in thinking of Steve Jobs.
