  • Ask questions about death, black or trash metal , and then we'll see what's the score :D

  • <3 wilson

  • I think I only knew the Rush and Jethro Tull questions.

  • The part when Steven names the songs on Rush's Hemispheres.. 'it's pathetic isn't it, really.'

  • Steven knows his shit. I'd love to hang out with him for a day and get prog recommendations from him.

  • Steven is taking this thing too seriously!!

    LOL!

  • It's okay, Mikael. You're still awesome.

  • LOL! Mikaels just like -___-'

  • "The Battle of the Gods"

  • I only got the king crimson question :(

  • 0:35 Mikael: I'm just about to say it xD

  • Mikael makes me laugh at 2:50

  • As Steven says at the end, these questions are geared more towards the more "mainstream" side of prog (Yes, Genesis, Rush, Marillion etc.). I think Mikael would've scored higher if they've had more obscure bands as well.

  • Poor Mikael

  • Steven is such a nerdy! Geez!

  • I knew almost all of these. :) But wow SW is a champ.

  • poor michael... but srsly, mike listens to a fuckton of old progrock, so this is a big win for steven :P

  • jerk!

  • i only got like 5

  • I suspect Steven wilson for having asperger syndrome

  • Jesus, does Steven do nothing but study prog rock stuff all day?

  • Damn, Steven is GOOD.

  • Aww, poor Mikael needs a hug after this

  • No Sabia Que El Metal Tratara De Una Competencia... Solo Debe Ser Buena Musica... Sentimientos Etc...

  • what is the name of the song?

  • @Rectoragia the lotus eater, it's from the watershed album :P

  • Comment removed

  • @Musicfrommitchell One of the most ignorant comments I have ever seen haha.

  • Fuck, he's so awesome.

  • I think Wilson doesn't even need to try to remember the answers. The man is a prog encyclopedia. Also gotta love it how he is slightly irritated when Åkerfeldt is quicker to answer the Camel question.

Can't wait for the upcoming Opeth album that Wilson will be producing.

  • Haha not surprised that Steven got so many right, and it isnt surprsing considering PT's and Opeth's early history. PT started out as a pure prog/trance/experimental/psychedelic band, Opeth was simply death metal.

  • @toolfan92

    >''simply death metal''

    no.

  • @toolfan92 Mad????? Opeth is a progressive metal band.

  • MAAAAAAUUUUUUULED. though i shouldnt talk the only one i knew was the songs on hemispheres

  • uaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • Most of these questions were too easy :P

  • Opeth started out as a edath metal band so this isn't really all that fair....

  • Wow Steven Wilson knows it all, that's amazing. Gotta love these guys, two of the best musicians nowadays.

  • This was hysterical! I am not surprised that Steven Wilson knew them all!! I do love them both though!

  • I knew that Mike would get the Camel question.

  • olo the only ones I knew were the pink floyd and king crimson ones and those were easy

  • "wasn't obscure enough for you" XD

  • Hahahaha love them both.Amazing guys.

  • Opeth still better imo

  • @iceseekers god i hate to agree but, yeah opeth

  • Comment removed

  • Now it this was about obscure 70's heavy metal bands, the tables would turn.

  • damn

    Steven destroyed Mikael

i still like Opeth alot more, but Porcupine Tree is a good abdn too, both these guys are awesome

  • v Just read through the entire discussion below of people comparing Steve Vai and Beethoven... oh dear, oh dear... Just like one of you already said, Beethoven wrote an ENTIRE symphony while being deaf, I mean just leave it there. It might not sound like much to you, but no contemporary musician has become even close to achieving such a feat and I think it deserves to be respected.

    You're pickering of stupid things.

  • I love this clip.

  • Oh Steven Wilson, You never can seize to amaze me can you?

  • Portnoy would take them both.

  • @Wied2009 'borderline laughable'

when it comes to knowing abt theory and stuff no one beats steven wilson.

dream theater is overall a much bttr band than porcupine tree and i prefer dt to porcupine tree . but porcupine tree runs circles arnd dream theater when it comes to technicality

  • @BASSER911414

You can't be serious. As far as technicality is concerned, Gavin Harrison is pretty awesome, but the rest of the band doesn't show much for technicality. All of Dream Theater is technical beyond belief.

  • @BASSER911414 Wow, you could not be any further from the truth. DT is MUCH more technical than PT (though every member of PT (besides Steven Wilson) is probably a better player on their respective instrument than their counterpart in DT...they just don't wank off as much). And DT is nowhere near as good a band as PT...I&W was excellent and Awake was decent, but nearly everything after that is just them being as technical as possible. Nowhere near the variety or compositional skills that PT has.

  • Respect Steven Wilson. He is cool and he rocks. But Mikael Akerfeldt can't really be compared to any musician or songwriter on this planet. HE IS MUSIC.

  • @floydian672 Yeah absolutely, he is music.

  • what the fuck are you talking here ... Mikael Akerfeldt can´t be compare with no one. The only person that can be also a music genius is Steve Vai, Jordan Rudess and Dan Swano

  • @MarianOctavarium There are many more musical geniuses than that. Don't limit it to just metal.

  • @MarianOctavarium You're severely retarded if you think any of these people are musical geniuses. Opeth are in my top five favorite bands of all time, but I'd never consider Mike a "musical genius".

  • @NWG92 no I am not retarded ... and Mikael IS a musical genius ... period

    PD: Fuck you

  • @MarianOctavarium Yeah dude these are the only ones. Beethovens just allright i guess. Steve Vai? Really? He may be able to play extremely fast on a guitar but his compositional skills are rather basic.

  • @BrixSnBs hahahahaha steve vai isn`t a musical genius ? what the fuck is wrong with you man ? Beethoven ? are you fucking kidding me right ? that is pretty obvious

Please please start listening to steve vai music. seriously. And please stop saying that steve vai music is very basic.

I`m not an ultimate Steve Vai fan for the record. I listen to his music ...

Please check my latest video. comment on it and give me your thoughts

  • @MarianOctavarium Please read and understand my comment before before you reply. Steve Vai is obviously a genius with a guitar on a technical level(He can play really fast) but take almost any of his songs and you will find that everything BUT the guitar playing is usually pretty simple and repetetive. Your opinion is'nt the rule, and if you don't think Beethoven was a genius.... Well then that pretty much speaks for itself. The guy wrote an entire symphony while being deaf for gods sake.

  • @BrixSnBs the same goes to you ... first of all I said that beethoven was pretty obvious and was unnecesary to put on the comment and second steve vai is an amazing guitar player and he plays in a way no one can play. so stop saying that kind of stupid things. LISTEN TO SOUND THEORIES !!! He wrote songs for an Orchestra

  • @MarianOctavarium Vai is an excellent guitarist and no more. He's not even remotely a genius. Frank Zappa on the other hand (for whom Vai played lead guitar on a few albums) is about the closest any American pop musician has ever come to being a genuine musical genius. If you had mentioned him, I might not have replied. But Steve Vai a musical genius? Don't make me laugh. Learn a little bit about music before you start talking about it.

  • The best 2 musician on earth.

  • @horny0donkey0 Definitely

  • sorry for the ignorance, but what's the song in background?

  • @Ty892 the lotus eater by Opeth

  • @horny0donkey0 thanx!!!

  • God I love these two. Truly hetero-lifemates. Agreed?

  • @MeAmExcel totally.

  • Steven Wilson knows about music, he is a good musician, but I still like Opeth better. Although... Porcupine Tree has some amazing tracks

  • @MetallKaos they are both perfect musician and both bands are beyond perfect.

  • He's right - the ELP album was pretty bad. But I do like Pirates.

I missed 3 questions, and I owned all of the lp's - except Marillion. Good lord SW is amazing.

  • Im impressed of M. Wilson... cause every one know Mikaal Akerfeldt is a human encyclopedia when it come to music. anyway, 2 of my favorite artiste here nice to see them!

  • "it wasn't obscure enough for you" :)

  • Mikael played guitar pretty much all day every day when he was growing up. Those kind of great musicians generally don't know SHIT about bands, songs, etc., they're just good as fuck at what they do. Steven is my favorite musician so I'm glad he won lol.

  • Looks like u really don't have to know much about prog music to make world's best prog music. Probly this lack of knowledge aaand the fact that Mikael was not so neccesarily influenced by those european bands - was the reason he has made such one of a kind music. :) greetz

  • @MrCrimsondom Except he truly is inspired, you can really tell in some Opeth's songs.

  • @StarMatt9th I do not think there was much influence in Opeth's music, except the Watershed album. You find there everything hard/prog rock had before.

  • @MrCrimsondom Well, the most revelant example is the song Benighted. Mikael just took the riff from the song Never Let Go, by the 70's prog band Camel.

  • @StarMatt9th You got me here. btw Mikael answered the Camel question here;]

  • @MrCrimsondom hey man. just accept it. mikael simply knows less. that's it. there are no excuses needed. knowing more or less doesn't imply anything about the quality of the compositions of this musicians : they are both geniuses. steven has simply a wider musical knowledge.

  • @SirXander u got me wrong. My comment is not supposed to be an excuse, rather a conclusion.

  • @MrCrimsondom oh, okay. sorry I misinterpreted it. stay prog, man!

  • @MrCrimsondom

originality isn't by inspiration of another's work?

  • @MrCrimsondom he would be more into death metal than prog rock.

  • Finish him!

  • 2:42 do i need to say more! That´s fucking hillarious, even Mikael and the lady can´t stop laughing, and yes Steven! It´s pathetic :P

  • @SkeksisBestSongEver But it's a really good album! Of course he knows it!

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, Mikael's is getting his ass whooped.. :P They're both very great musicians, though. Gotta say I love Opeth more, but Porcupine Tree is a wonderful band as well! Both very different.

  • Fatality... =D Love both of them.

  • i love steven wilson and Mikael Akerfeldt both. but IMO Mikael Akerfeldt is a much better singer.this was still fun to watch.

  • look Mikael xD 2:51

  • Steven Wilson is just amazing in the quiz

Mikael is just like ffs as how quick Steven is

  • 1:13 LOL

He just give an instant answer and Mikael just is like '';D''

  • Gods . Opeth And PT Are Awesomeness, Stop With These Stupid Comparisons .

  • porcupine tree without a doubt.

  • amazing. <3 SW<3

  • Opeth song lotus eater between answers say's everything ;) (i LOVE PT to but Opeth kick ass for me :D )

  • hahah Steven definitely knows his progressive music :P

  • 2:42 Best Answer hahahaha, incredible nerdly prog-speed. Awesome Rush Album BTW.

  • Steven wins the quiz, Mickael wins musically with the mighty Opeth

  • who cares?

in the end art isn´t made by knowledge

  • Poor Mikael... Steven is a music-history-crack. well anyways i was at the Opeth-concert in essen and it was awsome. but PT isn't bad either.

  • NO FAIR!!!

    hes a brit!!!!

    lol jk

  • seeing Porcupine Tree tonight !!!! It's going to be and experience!

  • At 0:32 Mikael: I was just about to say that! XD Hahaha, when they're togheter is the best. I just watched the Insurgentes documentary last month and the scene where Mikael appeared was funny XD

  • Steven is the living version of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I don't know any other music nerd like him.

  • @nfguler

Mozart was a musical genius like no other. Not now or in the past. Dont compare those two. Please.

  • @ozzi94 & nfguler: You're both wrong. SW>Mozart.

  • holy cow he know a lot!

  • I think Opeth is more the prog metalheads and PT is maybe for just prog fans over all. I love both though but Opeth is a bit better IMO.

  • @MALSIV

ya im a prog metal head and i think Opeth are a little better than PT but i do love PT alot.Tool also is a prog metalhead band which i love very much too

  • Steven knows his music, holy shit!

  • mikael: FUCK!

  • yeah cool video

  • literally spat out my coffee laughing when steven named the song titles of hemispheres! hahahaha fuckin brilliant!

  • Comment removed

  • I love them both! :) Awesome to see them side by side

  • opeth wins with their music, i dont understand how people compare the two, ive never found songs by either of them that sound alike, and if someone has, please show me

  • @abysslord16 wilson produced blacwater park and damnation, many vocal tricks and key arrangements are shared and opeth uses those since then, anyways, simply put they are both the best shit one can listen!

  • @mashmnky

well im more partial to Opeth, and never really listened to Porcupine Tree, if there are two songs alike.... what would they be?

  • @abysslord16 cheers mate, not exact songs, but lots of concepts, most of the haunting voices and keyboards you hear on damnation are p tree signature (actually keyboards on damnation were played by steven) and the long slided guitar riffs that are so opeth, can be heard in, let´s say The Blind house in porcupine tree´s latest album. check this interview with mikael and steve themselves, they go a little deeper on

  • @abysslord16 check this documentary where mikael and steven talk about hese topics themselves that /watch?v=wWMroDeqNdk

  • @mashmnky thanks man will do

  • @abysslord16 PT is mch more musical and dynamic.

  • Steven and Mikael both own [2] ALWAYS

  • Hey, I got the same score as Mikael... Good for me, bad for him. He is still something close to my hero, though.

  • Hilarious video!

Steven and Mikael both own, IMO

PT and Opeth are so more better than most other music out there these days

  • woow, great vid, they`re both so fckin great !!!!!!!

  • Poor mickael ^^

  • Wow, Steven. oO

I was a BIG Genesis-Fan and I also listen to their music very often, but never I could answer those questions. :D

    My respect.. =)

btw: Steven is a great musician, but i don't like his opinion about iPods. -.-

  • Steven Wilson Wins ! FATALITY.

  • this is so great! i love the look on mikael's face the whole time!

  • Mikael has never heard Script for Jester's Tear? Wow, I might have been able to beat him. Doesn't make him any less of a musician though....

  • Wow that was hilarious, good job Mikael. 2 points haha. I don't know where this came from but it was fun to watch.

  • opeth - the lotus eater

  • What opeth song is that in the background?

  • Fuck me how does he know all that shit? I got maybe 6 right almost 7 but missed the 3rd Genesis album, and I was listening to that stuff in the 70's.

The guy's got a memory like a computer hard drive.

  • Poor Mikael Akerfeldt... he didn't know a bus full of Steven Wilson was headed right for him. ^_^

  • Battle Of Gods!

  • Battle Of Gods?

  • SW kicks ass!!!

  • lol poor Mikael :P he totally got pwned, Steven got every single question right xD

  • I love how Wilson not only answers the question, but expands on it haha :P

  • I just picked up PT - On the Sunday of Life. It's seriously amazing. So many great songs on it. And the whole album has a great sense of humour :D get it! Some songs are from Wilson's teenage years, and he sounds young as. It's hilarious

  • Wilson always struck me as the learnéd, encyclopaedic-type. Well, while Mikael misses sum of these points, he makes up for with his inherent knowledge of musicianship }={D- ( <- that's Mike btw)

  • huh, i saw a video of mike portnoy from DT take this exact quiz

  • OH SNAP!akerfeldt gets pwned majorly here

  • Is watershed any good?

  • Yes.

  • yes, its great

  • Yes it is, but you need more time to "realize how good it is".

I always thought that the Watershed album is more like mainstream music or something, but it's great!

  • Yeah dude, I thought the exact same thing but the more I listened to it, the more I realized how complex and beautiful it is.

  • Comment removed

  • You should definitely buy it. Really good material there. For example, Heir Apparent, one of Opeth's top 10 songs in my opinion.

  • Hessian Peel is pretty damn awesome too :D

  • yeah watershed's really really great,,,i would say my favorite second to blackwater park,,,,,it is awesome

  • LoL at 1:54

  • yeah he's a living data base oO

  • Damn, he's quick! Love both bands, but Opeth definitely more.

  • That's sick!

  • Wauw!

  • opeeeeeeeeeth =)
