DT is MUCH more technical than PT (though every member of PT (besides Steven Wilson) is probably a better player on their respective instrument than their counterpart in DT...they just don't wank off as much). And DT is nowhere near as good a band as PT...I&W was excellent and Awake was decent, but nearly everything after that is just them being as technical as possible. Nowhere near the variety or compositional skills that PT has.

Steve Vai is obviously a genius with a guitar on a technical level(He can play really fast) but take almost any of his songs and you will find that everything BUT the guitar playing is usually pretty simple and repetetive. Frank Zappa on the other hand (for whom Vai played lead guitar on a few albums) is about the closest any American pop musician has ever come to being a genuine musical genius. Mikael played guitar pretty much all day every day when he was growing up. Those kind of great musicians generally don't know SHIT about bands, songs, etc., they're just good as fuck at what they do. Steven is my favorite musician so I'm glad he won lol.
