I've seen cons in Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand, The Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Cambodia. Yet I've lived in Japan for 8 years and have experienced the polar opposite in terms of values. Just recently, a bank employee visited my house to personally apologise for short-changing me by 1,000 yen and give me a handwritten letter of apology + deep bow. Eat your heart out Thailand!

Sure I would have chatted with the woman to pass the time but when she asked what you two were up to after the temple and you said you weren't sure. she offered you could have shot her down saying you were just going to find a bathroom or somewhere to eat ;) everybody makes mistakes. good thing you didn't lose all of your money.

What an awsome trip to Thailand well their are jerks everywhere, even though people try to take away your money one way or another, I've never had that kind of experience in Canada nor in Colombia. Offcourse here in the USA in Miami, Florida I got armed robbed at night, I was walking my poodle until two jerks with guns told me to give them my phone and wallet so I was sad that Monday night but anyway just becareful anywhere and please I hope you could visit Colombia !
Everybody has a weakness that can be exploited. You're not naive for walking into a well planned scam and you did very well considering the circumstances. The lady's objective was 100 dollars, she got 15. You outfoxed the fox:)

Its funny how nobody speaks english, then all of the sudden I am approached by a perfect english speaking Chinese, all friendly, wanting to do something together.. Then 10 minutes later by another haha.. Really ruins it for the actual honest people that just want to make friends with you.
Anyway, good positive outlook, I love Thailand also, lots of fun.
You action ruins the reputation of your own country. Its not easy to become one of the most popular places. If you're not doing anything to help, so atleast stop destroying your own country.
Im so sorry to hear what happened to you in Thailand. I'm Thai and I always nice to foreigners and tourists. I dont have any excuses to say about this but to let you know that Thais are actually very nice and humble people, and hope you will come back to Thailand again.
And for that scam lady and all the scams in Thailand, plzzzz stop what you doing now. You should know that tourism is one of the significant income for Thailand. Many people are relying on tourism industry.

The thing that bugs me the most about scams like this is that I enjoy talking to people, meeting new people, hearing their stories...etc. But when you hear about people like this, it makes you not want to talk to people anymore because no one trusts each other. It makes me feel uneasy talking to people I don't know. Oh well, I am glad the rest of your trip went well.

Mai, it's 反省 time. You can learn from this experience, and also be grateful for the standard of living that you have, compared to many people like this lady, who has to fool others in order to make her living. I'm sure she's not happy about that either.
Travelling makes you grow in many ways, I think it was better to have this experience rather than just laze at home, without a doubt.
Hey, look at it this way, $15 for a boat ride isn't bad. That looked like the most fun part of your whole trip from what I saw. I'm sorry that she asked for so much money and treated you poorly, but it could have been a LOT worse and you didn't have to pay how much she asked you for. You should have just walked away at that point; I doubt she would have been able to stop you.

Subway passed McDonald's for the most restaurants this year. @TheMaiLog: Glad you came through your scam experience OK. I'm a lot older than you and it's still hard for me not to immediately want to trust people. Learning to read situations and people is an important life skill that sometimes takes a mistake or two to sink in. Keep having fun!

Yep! Thats how that works. THere were all kinds of scammers trying to get at my friend and I in Beijing. Its sooo hard to know and you dont want to be rude and dismissive. Trust the ol instincts I guess. Gut feelings are usually right. And that sucks even more that she said she was from Phuket. Thats my favorite place in the whole world. THats where my videos in Thailand are from at them moment.

残念ながらよく有る事です、日本に留学している親戚がいるなどと言って近寄ってきます（どこの国でもあり得る事ですが）、そのような時は大抵船とグルですので船番号を記録しておきツーリストポリスに行って下さい。普通の警官と違い帰国子女等の多い彼らが解決してくれます。
