Part 5: I guess I've gone on enough (thanks for the platform!) but I'm telling you it was THE best. Quarter mile blasts burning down the tires the entire way was standard operating procedure. They go faster today, sure, but there's never been a 1,000 foot run at any speed that could equal the excitement of a 1960's event. The "murphy91" posts are some of the best drag racing action on YouTube so I would encourage you to keep it up! Thanks for the memories!
Part 4: Funny cars BEFORE they were floppers. First they were running mechanical (Hilborne) fuel injection and then they moved to blowers with the motors set back. And the motors they ran; many were very successful with the big block "Rat Motor" Chevy (which, if you were a Chevy guy, gave you a REAL reason to root for the car), the hemi Chrysler (331, 354, 392 and 426 blocks) AND the 427 SOHC hemi Ford. I saw Kalitta win Top Fuel @ the 1967 Pomona Winternationals with the "cammer" Ford.
Part 3: Top fuel cars were also so common in the day. I attended numerous races that had 64 cars in the 1st round of top fuel! The PDA (Professional Driver's Association) meet @ Lions in July of 1967 had 122 cars show up to qualify! Can you imagine that! And it wasn't just top fuel. There were other classes that were exciting too. Top gas (AA/GD), fuel altereds (AA/FA), gassers (AA/GS), the earliest of funny cars (A/FX) with Dick Landy, Butch Leal and their altered wheelbases.
Part 2: The Surfers (Bob Skinner & Tom Jobe turning wrenches and the late Mike Sirokin in the seat), running out of a motel in Santa Monica, Ca., wouldn't even touch the car between rounds just to stress out the competition. They became a legend @ SoCal strips with the rumor they were running 100% in the tank although I once overheard Tom Jobe telling someone that they actually ran 98% because the motor wouldn't idle on 100%, or they would have! SO much fun "back in the day."
@murphy91 ~ The amazing thing about drag racing in the 60's was that even the strongest of top fuel cars were campaigned by 2 or 3 guys who worked 40 hours a week and then rolled their cars out of the garage (where it had sat, next to the washer & dryer all week) and headed off to try and make some money on weekends. There were no spare motors, blowers or anything. They might pull the plugs between rounds and CHECK them but that was it. I can especially remember The Surfers top fuel car.
@murphy91 ~ I can believe it! I lived at SoCal dragstrips (Lions, Irwindale, OCIR, Pomona for the "Big Go West" in February, Fontana and Bakersfield for the '65 and '67 Smokers Meet) from my first trip to Lions in March 1963 (saw The Greek run 8:20 @ 193 that day! ~ they weren't even running Zoomie headers until '64) and on average, race-to-race, the Warren-Coburn-Miller top fuel car was as strong as any fueler I watched run in the 60's and early 70's. And, honestly, I saw them all.
@MrRonnieG ..I wish I could have been there.....It was an amazing time.....Thank You for sharing your memories....feel free to add any stories you have, it's the best way to keep it alive.
Warren-Coburn-Miller was one of the strongest West Coast cars around from the middle 60's until who knows when. Big tall James Warren (who just passed away a few months ago) was BAD in a car they called the "Ridge Route Terrors" because the W-C-M gang were from Bakersfield, California. I saw them run, it seemed, a thousand times in the 60's.
@MrRonnieG As legend goes, other teams would send a spy to see which way their rig was headed (North or South) .. when they knew which way WCM were headed, they sent their own teams the other way....so they could have a chance to win....Now thats BAD ASS.....
@GuidesAndMeta "WHAT IS IT ABOUT?" You need to go to a drag strip when nitro cars are running and it should come to you, if it doesn't you are officially brain dead.
@0FlyingSwede0 ..Aint it tho?...I have been around these cars most of my life and for some reason this one is one of the loudest and most angry sounding AA/FDs I have ever heard.
@IngmarxEsmee They don't actually race these cars anymore and will pretty much only do static starts with the driveline disconnected or push starts on the track. You have to remember that these cars are upwards of 40 years old .
@murphy91 That would not stop me from running them. If anything makes me sad the easiest, it's seeing a nice old car rotting away doing shit like this and never being driven as it's meant to be driven.
Who cares if it goes out in a fireball on the far end? Better that then rotting in a museum I say.
@TestECull ..I would too....but being as these cars are old and no longer come close to being safe.....I'm very happy that so many have been found and restored..so that they aren't sitting in barn rotting away....I sure do appreciate your sentiment though.....
@murphy91 Lack of safety gear wouldn't keep me out of the driver's seat. If I were to cartwheel through the Pearly Gates, on fire, at age 33, I would be content. I'd rather die young and have fun than die an old, cranky, bored codger.
@TestECull You're damn right man! I at least wanna see one of these things burn some tire or something. I have to admit though, it sure does sound badass.

@murphy91 Maybe these guys are running it on pure nitromethane, thats what they did back in the day.
