Thank you for loading this. My mom and dad had 7 kids and he sang this to all of us as children. We played it at his funeral yesterday. We love your song Phil Harris. R.I.P. Phil & dad
Keep in mind this was back when performers were clever about risque material. To get the joke, try clapping instead of the drum pounding. The last line of the song pretty much sums it up :D
No way, this was my childhood song! :D It scared me though because I didn't know what the hell was in the box ha ha ha. Thanks for the upload, it brings back great memories. :)
I had this on 78 when I was about 4 years old (1958 and my grandparents would let me go through and play all of their old 78's), and it was a short matter of time before i broke it. A week later my grandmother took me to a record store and bought an RCA Red Seal EP45 that had The Thing, Darktown Poker Club, That's What I Like About The South, and The Preacher and the Bear. Great song. As far as what's in the box? Use your imagination...it can get pretty disgusting...:D Cheers!
I never knew the name of this song but I remember it. PBS is re-broadcasting "Magic Moments the 50's" and they list all the music you get on CD and this is one so I looked it up.
It was never revealed and left up to everyone's imagination. On his radio program, Phil whispers what the thing is to Elliott Lewis, but no one hears the answer.
@toyboytwo my dad sang this song ALL the time, he said the (boom-ba-boom) was a bomb, had something to do with the Korean war, he was in the army during that time, so I think it's accurate *shrug*
i played this morning,noon,night too my dad did,nt brake it but for bid me to never play it again as long i lived at home think was the year i got head phones for xmas lol
Have you ever noticed how"The Thing"and the"Lincolnshire Poacher"sound so similar??

@TheFreakieZombie
Maybe it was a Dildo that was in the wooden box and why he was trying to take the thing inside, he was even told to take it down below....!

Maybe it's Mr. Ed? This song sounds just like the theme to Mr. Ed! Perhaps the theme was ripped from this?

What generation was this song aimed for?
It was issued in 1950, but the fifties rock and roll had not started yet.
