Anyone who wants to see the use of upstrokes with a pick just needs to watch this as Les plays rhythm. What he demos here became the industry standard. The Beatles, for all their inventiveness and brilliance, never escaped his shadow.
@AlanSturgess HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!! He is remembered for inventing the electric guitar, not for his music. That's a ridiculous comparition to make!!
@ernesto1985 I can't believe you think LP's reputation is so limited: multi-tracking - early recording techniques and effects - MASSIVE hits recording with his wife and Chet Atkins - a lifetime's reputation as a player who performed weekly in New York until just weeks before he died. You need to broaden your horizons and do a bit of elementary research before you sound off. Also, Lloyd Loar invented the first pickups in 1924. ESC and Rickenbacker PRECEDED Les who DEVELOPED electric guitar.
@AlanSturgess mmm you are right, those are really important personal achievements AND contributions to the music of the XX century. It's just that I think that the Beatles's contributions to music history are way too important to be left in a second place to this fine man's.
Hello, i am doing a project on Les Paul for National History Fair and if anyine knows who the announcer in the video is thaty would be very helpful to know. Also if anyine has a good source about les paul please contact me.
I just love it when militant atheists go off on someone who believes differently than they do. I don't know whether or not Les Paul was a Christian but I do hope that he is resting peacefully with his lady Mary Ford.
Les and Mary had a good run together. He wasn't angry with her, and he said he didn't blame her for wanting out of the performing life, and so out of his, back in 1964. I believe Les cared for Mary right to the end, and I think he would have been very happy to be laid to rest with her.
Just the way he talked about their parting ways. I saw an interview with him several years ago. He talked about her with an air of fondness, not at all bitter as some men are. The way he talked made it sound like Mary didn't want to leave him so much, but she just couldn't go on living a performer's life, and he just couldn't stop being a performer. I'm ashamed to say I didn't really keep up with what she was doing after their split, but he sounded like she still cared for him, too.
it took a long time for folk to accept electric guitars in church. they stuck in the old. even the bible say the youth will rule. les paul, u da man!!!!!!!
Dead to the world, alive in Christ. Please, respect my beliefs - not fantasies - as I respect yours. I do believe that everyone have the chance of getting to Heaven if they're good people. And Les Paul surely was a good man, thus I'm sure good Lord has greeted him in Heaven with pleasure.
Apparently what you find sick and disrespectful I find a part of western culture. For ages people have prayed for their late relatives, aquinctances, idols, etc. As I'm a man of faith I find heaven the greatest reward for our lifes, thus wishing late Les heavenly award is from my side the greatest respect I can give to him. If you don't like me paying respect to Les Paul in the best way I can - don't read my comments. I find further conversation with you pointless.
How is saying Rest in Peace to someone a lack of respect? And how is hoping that someone is resting in heaven fantisising and what more disrespectful and sick. Fantasising tends to be associated with a more sexual nature which we can clearly not see.
I just facepalmed IRL barrett1968, that's quite a feat. Shut the fuck up, and leave.
What do the specifics of these fantasies have to do with anything?
So, your great grandfathers currently prancing around cotton meadows with flowers in his hair. When hes not resting, of course. See, dying can be quite exhausting, or so people who fantasise about the dead tell me. He laughing with his new friends, Rainbow the unicorn and Velvet the Ferret.
That's just..."wrong" in more ways than one. Continue facepalming as you see fit. What else have you been rubbing with those palms?
Very inspiring video....it's a pleasure to have lived amongst one of the guitar greats. He inspired so many of us to pick up the guitar and play. Just to attempt to put it all in perspective is overwellming. Les you will be missed!!!!
Note carefully the DEARMOND pickups on that Goldtop. Ironically, none of his great records were done on LP guitars nor even Gibsons for that matter.Later on his few recordings that featured LP's were totally one off prototypes with his proprietary electronics. Maybe Gibson will NOW give us something in a reissue that approximates what he REALLY used and truly give tribute to him and not in the least the most successful endorsement arrangement in the history of musical instrument manufacturing .
And he did it all with a right arm that was fused in a bent "guitar-playing position" (as opposed to amputation) after an accident early in his career.
AMAZING video - incredible what they could do with very old technology back then. I wonder if they can do everything today (with modern technology) that they did back then (with simpler equipment)? Thank you Les Paul
This is an incredible video. The electric guitar was awesome enough...but the multi-track! This guy gave us so much, it's hard to imagine anyone who has had a bigger impact.

You hope he's resting with a woman who divorced him more than 4 decades ago? Okay...so that's the thanks you get for being an innovator?

Okay. What do you base that belief on? I'm just curious - not trying to start an argument. And how do you think Mary would say to it all?

You are fantasising about a recently deceased man and I find that disrespectful and sick.
Why do you beliefs deserve respect that other fantasies don't? And what makes them more true?
barrett1968 2 years ago

Lack of culture is more apt.
But we agree that you can't be reached by further 'conversation'. Keep fantasising.
