I think it is funny that you have to build a Ford or a Chevy so they can go offroading. My Land Rover came offroad ready from the factory. Move militaries use Defenders than an yother vehicle. The H1 is SO good that after only 30 yrs it is being replaced. The Defender has been the #1 vehicle for the British for over 50yrs. The Defender is smaller, quicker, lighter and cheaper to repair. You know nothing of what you speak dogfood.

@cjskahan the hummer is being replaced becuase when the military sadles it with an extra 7 tons of weight, but does not upgrade the drive train very much or at all, including suspension, it stops being usefull as an off road vehicle.

You failed to mention it's greatest weakness though, the serious lack of power. The Defender and HMMWV both have flat bottoms though which is useless against IED's.
The British Army didn't even armor plate the bottom of the Defender which renders the original argument moot. Both the Defender and the HMMWV are not equipped to handle modern warfare (IED's).
@cjskahan well put my friend, they didn't while i was in, but if that is something that has changed in the past year i could see it, but i doubt it seriouesly, some of the HMMWV had the original diesel engine in them when i got them in my tour in iraq in 07-09, and i mean original factory matching numbers engine, so yes they did lack the power, just like any other tank :P strong side/front armor, weak bottom and top armor, and no balls in the engine room :P

@tehfatkitteh1 H1's are literally a civilian HMMWV, the newer army HMMWV's have a curb wieght of about 9 tons, the H2 and H3 don't count cuase they use a chevy S-10 truck frame instead of the old HMMWV frame like the H1's do, which is why the H1 was such a tank for a regular guy to drive down the road
@tehfatkitteh1 not alot truly, the main difference was the interrior,the original HMMWVs didn't have park, but newer HMMWV's do, that and civillian H1's are in 12 volt, like every other car, and the military HMMWV is a 24 volt two battery system, and nicer seats, but they are the same size, the H1's never got an up armor package or a machinegun turret that added about 1500 lbs to the top of the vehicle, and didn't need the military combat systems that are needed for military use, radio's, mainly
@tehfatkitteh1 there are some other things, such as a "slave recepticle" that allows one HMMWV to jump another alot easier that normal jumper cables and is a NATO standard, that recepticle and the battery are under the front right seat instead of under the hood, little things like that, but most of the HMMWV and H1 stuff is the same, the H2 and H3 use a chevrolet S-10 pickup truck frame instead of the fairly unique HMMWV body/frame

Wow so many think these are the end all rigs thats funny. First of all the military does things to their rigs before put into service and then they take it away when they surplus them out. Oh and a round through any rigs radiator when leave it dead. Any v-8 1 ton or 3/4 ton could haul them away. Then there is always semis. Trees and barns can hide a lot. @tehfatkitteh1 H1's are literally a civilian HMMWV, the newer army HMMWV's have a curb wieght of about 9 tons, the H2 and H3 don't count cuase they use a chevy S-10 truck frame instead of the old HMMWV frame like the H1's do, which is why the H1 was such a tank for a regular guy to drive down the road

@tehfatkitteh1 not alot truly, the main difference was the interrior,the original HMMWVs didn't have park, but newer HMMWV's do, that and civillian H1's are in 12 volt, like every other car, and the military HMMWV is a 24 volt two battery system, and nicer seats, but they are the same size, the H1's never got an up armor package or a machinegun turret that added about 1500 lbs to the top of the vehicle, and didn't need the military combat systems that are needed for military use, radio's, mainly

@tehfatkitteh1 there are some other things, such as a "slave recepticle" that allows one HMMWV to jump another alot easier that normal jumper cables and is a NATO standard, that recepticle and the battery are under the front right seat instead of under the hood, little things like that, but most of the HMMWV and H1 stuff is the same, the H2 and H3 use a chevrolet S-10 pickup truck frame instead of the fairly unique HMMWV body/frame
