I don't think there was one side of the war that was 100% good or evil, but it's certainly best that things turned out with Germany and Japan defeated, and the USSR eventually becoming Russia.

the feel of the uniform even if it isnt the correct one on his body, the hat, the boots when his feet hit the floor - doing the familiar motions of marching - the arm going up with order to do so - he has the same experience you would have if you sat on a bike after 25 years and started to ride it - he is maybe even remembering the feeling and notions while in the uniform back in the day - the mind is a strong machine....things you have forgotten can pop up fresh and jerk you like a puppet:)

As for the novel, I thought about this: I don't think an old nazi soldier would be so ready to execute orders in english, just like -for example an american soldier wouldn't be ready at orders in french and so on..

I just read the book... Though good, I say there was a lot of useless killing.

The ending in the book as compared to the movie was quite a shock.

Stephen King described the nightmares they had in such vivid detail it was almost disturbing.
