Believe it or not, if the pilot was in a remote area without much population and he was airshow endorsed this could be perfectly legal if they were wearing parachutes
I suggest you ask your flight instructor to speak with Brian Webster of dunkyou dot com. Ask him if he could relay his story of a flight over a river in a 150. It may make a difference to you or somebody you know. Cheers.
I am an aussie pilot. Your flight instructor is breaking the law. I have the regs in front of me now. CAR 157 states "(1) The pilot in command of an aircraft must not fly the aircraft over.... (b) any other area lower than 500 feet. Penalty: 50 units.(2) An offence against subregulation (1) is an offence of strict liability. There are certain situations where this is allowed but your flight does not qualify. You should reported this idiot if he is still alive. The regs are there to protect life.
@tuberdavefly 100% correct, and he is also banking harder than 60 degrees later in the clip which is another no no, plus he's banking harder than 60 at an altitude below minimums. The instructor is an idiot, and he shouldn't be allowed to teach such reckless flying to impressionable students.
I'g get a new flight instructor....a good instructor should teach his students, "the safest way to fly is high and fast (gives you the longest glide path if something goes wrong, and in a single engine airplane it will) and always know where the nearest place or airport is to ditch". You should drop the name so the rest of us know where not to go.
The instructor obviously knew what he was doing, and it was not dangerous for a proficient pilot. So all you armchair 'pilots' need to calm yourselves and quit beating off over this little feat.
On the other hand he is not setting a good example for his student who might go and try this before he is ready.
Lot's of discussion about whether the altitude was in violation of the FAR's...if you want the hard evidence of a violation freeze the video at 1:15 and pull out your protractor. Bank angle is clearly in excess of 60 degrees and thus illegal (unless the student and instructor are both wearing parachutes).
Ditto to all the comments about what the horrible example this instructor is setting for a student pilot.
Your instructor is a stupid phucking idiot. It's selfish, irresponsible, unprofessional, and just plain stupid. Height requirements don't mean shit, ever heard of FAR 91.13?? Amateurs in aviation, nothing more.
This is happening during a flying lesson? Whether it's legal or not, it's a very poor example to set. I know this is a couple of years old, and I wonder how the student is doing. Please tell me that you haven't tried anything similar on your own.
Roudy1331, apart from the catch-all aspect of 91.13, don't agree that this violates FARs. the hazard in 91.119 is to "persons or property on the surface". are you arguing that includes eventual rescue people?
too many modern "pilots" (not necessarily you) have an unsafe fear of the ground and an inordinate reverence for FAR bullshit. practicing intelligent low flight can be a life saver.
@2ndAsstJizzMopper You hit the nail on the head with the "catch-all" aspect of 91.119. That is why it is there and therefore why the video violate's the regulation. My only argument is that if the power unit fails who does the property below belong too? City? State?
Again, I think the flying was beautiful and admit that most pilots have busted an altitude clearance once and a while. It can be fun, exciting and as you said a great lesson for flight!
Per, FAR 91.119 below you can see that the regulation clearly defines situations you may run into as a pilot and wanting to fly at a lower altitude. I think we can all agree that the area was NOT congested and I thinksome could make an argument that the situation on the video isn't even "other than congested area". So, even if I play devils advocate and say that this video falls in the category of (a) anywhere, where would have the pilot landed if the engine failed?
Except when necessary for takeoff or landing, no person may operate an aircraft below the following altitudes: (a) Anywhere. An altitude allowing, if a power unit fails, an emergency landing without undue hazard to persons or property on the surface. (b) Over congested areas. Over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons, an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft.
(c) Over other than congested areas. An altitude of 500 feet above the surface, except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In those cases, the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure.
Its funny because ive just come from a video that was flying low like this but down a valley so it was much more dangerous and everybody was condoning it. I was confused but now I think about it I think why not! Don't listen to the haters and fly the plane as you are. At least your not posing threats to any other person or animal then your more than entitled to live the life you want to. Theres not a guaranty that there is another one!
Well, from the camera point of view we can´t see the wheels being washed :). Legalities apart this is a difficult stunt even for very experienced pilots. I remember a fatal accident of a 20000+ hours australian aerobatic pilot doing a stunt like this. It is something a very experienced pilot can do, maybe regularly, until that fatal day. If you must do it, do it, but do not repeat too often. Luck or the lack of it) does plays its part on this type of stunt.
That can bend the landing gear main bolts. You are hitting it at over 100 mph. Tell your CFI to teach you forced landings on take off instead of bending the gear like that.
I hope that for the sake of you and your instructor that you know its illegal and dangerous to fly that low to the ground other than landing or an emergency.
@Rick1885 Not entirely correct. You CAN fly under 500 feet if you are over sparsely populated areas not within 2000 feet of people or structures or over open water. That's if I remember my FAR/AIM book correctly.
@Rick1885 nope, not illegal. refer to comment at the top, and if you need further clarification refer to FAR 91.119. make sure you got your facts strait before you make a stupid comment, fag.
lmao this has got to be either the dumbest or the most kickass pilot ever, maybe both and this is really stupid but in the end a sweet video. 5 stars ha ha
According to the FAA rules this isn't illegal. The height requirements are, 1,000 ft above the the highest obstacle within 2,000 ft. of the obstacle in highly populated area, 500 ft. above sparsely populated areas, and no requirements over water. The only stipulation is that you can't pose a threat to other persons or property. These are the rules for the U.S. VH is an Australian designation so I'm not sure what the rules are there.
Whether or not it is a smart thing to do is a different story.
@fancyzippo As an Aussie pilot living and working in the states, I can say that unless this guy had a low flying permit, (we had on as a flight school, but it only applied to certain geographical locations), he is well below the legal minimum altitude of 500' by CASA law. The FAA CFR 91.119 you are referring to states that over water you must be 500' from person, vessel, vehicle or structure, not to mention within gliding distance of a place to land should the engine fail. Either way, stupid.
Anywhere: an altitude allowing a safe emergency landing without undue hazard to person or property on the ground;
Over Congested Areas: an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal distance of less than 2,000 feet;
Over Populated Areas: an altitude of 500 feet AGL;
Over Open Water or Sparsely Populated Areas: an altitude allowing for a linear distance greater than 500 from any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure;
@fancyzippo I'm only a private pilot, but I do believe that you are both right and wrong; According to FAR 91.119(c), you are correct. However, citing FAR 91.13(b), this person is "operating an aircraft... in a caraless or wreckless manner so as to endanger the life or property of another." If the PIC owned the plane, and was the only occupant, then I can see how it would be legal. Personally, it does look like a ton of fun and I'd love to try it myself... AFTER I buy my own plane!
@worldinflames11 another title for this video is duck hunting with a c-150. All it would take is to have a flight of birds get scared at the sound of the plane and you would have duck soup with pilot spice. My instructor was a sadist and perfectionist, but at least he had some sense.
Man, what a bunch of whiny nannies! No laws are being broken here, well that low level wing-over maybe, but if this seems too reckless for you then you probably should just keep the plane in the hangar.
Looks like you're having some good fun. It is even more fun with a faster airplane. Trust me. All you other straight and level fraidy cats baggin on this guy need to back off. If flying low is not your cup of tea....fine. Just cause your not comfy flying low (do you really fly) don't bag on those who do.
Looks fun, being a helicopter pilot I'm used to flying low. All you fixed wing guys on here need to get your panties out of a bunch and loosen up. I've been in a 172 several times at less than 50 ft. It's good fun.
This is an awesome video wether its breaking the law or not! I wish I had the opportunity to do that kind of flying. We could all die in a plane crash anytime, might as well be whilst you're having some fun rather than accidently flying into cloud and ploughing into a mountain....
as far as i know from flying. you can go as low as you want over a UNPOPULATED AREA!!! you did fine. me and my friends do it all the time. we love to buzz farmers out in the fields on the eastern shore. awsome vid man
@youngestpilotinGa it doesnt matter. some rules in flying are meant to be broken. who doesnt fly below 500 feet when they have the chance? maybe those that are by the book everytime and dont know how to lighten up and enjoy the freedom of flight.
Actually I would check into that again Shortygasp. If it wasn't illegal then it sure as hell would not get you your license, and is therefore a really stupid thing to do.
Noo they are not "Sissy Ass" comments, They are totally correct. You should lose your license for doing that! And a flight instructor setting an example like this is plane messed up and immature. If you catch the wheels in the water, the plane flips, and you won't be alive to tell people not to be retarded and do what you did!
What a bunch of sissy ass comments. you can do more with an airplane than just drive it like a car. Besides their out in the middle of no where. Great video, looks like a hell of a lot of fun.
Nice flying, and not illegal.....Dno what airlaw book these guys studied:P Anyhow, I would be scared shitless for a birdstrike, that close to the bush and @ 20ft:P
Now thats how you have fun. And for the poster that said its illegal, its not. You can get as low as you like over a non-pop. area. The wheels never touched the water, but if they had you would have flipped and died for sure! A trike gear'ed planes can't ski but a tail-dragger can. But only if the water is VERY calm or directly crosswind so that the wheels dont hit any waves or wake. Very fun to scud-run, but yes, dumb.
We can alll stop argueing about wether or not this is legal. It is not illegal but it is REALLY stupid. If the wheels get to far into the water the drag would slow you down to the point that ytou could'nt recover and would nail the water and sink. So in conclustion, it is not illegal but it is a REALLY REALLY REALLY STUPID thing to do. But in the event of crash while performing this it could be ruled as recless and irresponsible flying and thew pilot could lose his license.
this isnt just a safety hazard, it's illegal! keep it above 500 feet espiecially near the choke points of rivers, where there are powerlines and whatnot.
@TheNeonTide FAA rules in a sparsely populated area is 500ft from persons or property, not above the ground. But the general rule also in the FAR's is an altitude allowing a safe landing without damage to persons or property. So take your pick. I would not do that myself, and certainly not with a student who(obviously) does not know any better.
There is a saying you would be wise to remember. "There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots. But there are no old, bold pilots." This was beyond bold...this was stupid and irresponsible. His day is coming as is yours if you follow that example.
What is the tail number so I don't ever get in this plane?????? lets See. You buy, He fly.... I could not ever take advantage of student time much less their money that they paid for the lesson.
Looked like a fun trip, wouldn't go quite so low myself. As for hazards, a bird strike at that alt would ruin your day and you gotta expect birds that low near water! If the engine packed up you may convert some speed to height but probably only enough to prepare for a ditch, certainly not enough for an attempt at restarting.
Regardless, instead of slagging each other off, try discussing and learn from this.
@svenski59 exactly what i was thinking, high chance of a bird strike. I did this along the gulf coast in my younger days and flew right through a flock of pelicans. I was luck not to hit one.
Looks fun. I don't see a structure in site so why the hub bub I'm not sure. This is pretty standard in AK. If you go in.. well that's on you right? It's called every pilot is responsible for himself and his passengers.
@beergut111 haha ook you have a lot of studying to do dummy, how about you ask your instructor to bring his far/aim and look up part 91.119 (c). over other than congested areas an altitude of 500 ft above the surface except over open water and sparsely populated areas. in those cases the aircraft may not be operated within 500 ft of any person, vessel, vehicle or structure. congrats on becoming an idiot. you're a fucking moron. btw im a commercial rated pilot with my instrument rating as well
@gypsykingg wow a commercial with an instrument rating. few more hours and i would allow you to fly right seat for me. problem there sport is this isnt over open water.
And you are sure there are no people on the ground there......riiiiiiiight
and btw I have an ATP with about a dozen type ratings kid.
@beergut111 this is open water dumbass, and you sure are some good atp since you didnt even know there is no altitude restristion over sparsely populated areas. you're a fucking idiot and you probably have never stepped foot inside an aircraft
@gypsykingg That's all true man and kudos on your ratings but face it: this video is the very reason people want to fly planes. Admit it, you'd love to buzz the tower wouldn't you?
@beergut111 Hey man, it looks fun and no one got hurt. Only the pilot and student were at risk. It doesn't mean he's going to land a 727 on the interstate to ask directions.
@Iris421989 this is very illegal....having an instructor on board dont matter. You can only go below 500 ft for takeoff and landing...there is no runway in front of this plane.
Your CFI better be a large individual, because if I were his student and he did this with me in there ONE of us is getting his ass kicked when we're back on the ground.
You have an instructor with a serious screw loose. Find another instructor immediately. I would also report this person to the FAA as you don't want to find out that another student is killed with the instructor down the road.
Please post the name of the instructor so FAA can take the appropriate action. You obviously think this is cool and you are impressed enough to put it on youtube. This is exactly why this idiot instructor shouldn't be doing it. You will no doubt try and emulate this with one of your mates on board and kill some poor innocent bastard.
whats the point of flying if you cant have fun, good shit bro, dont listen to any of these pussies that say its dangerous to do that, fuck em. there clearly not experienced enough to know how to have fun.
@3IDLukeK well ive been flying since i was 14 lol im 21 now with about 250 hours in single engine, and advanced single engine, ive flown some aerobatic aircraft which is fun as HELL, dont have that endorsement yet tho, i know what im doing enough to safely have fun, especially when flying low and fast, ALWAYS know where the wind is coming from, especially if your flying in hilly areas, bc if your on the leeward side you could catch a down draft and slam you into the ground
Ready for Reno,check out complete.

You had an irresponsible "flight instructor." I use quotes because his ratings should be stripped. You DO NOT do this kind of stuff with a student.

This is an awesome video wether its breaking the law or not! I wish I had the opportunity to do that kind of flying. We could all die in a plane crash anytime, might as well be whilst you're having some fun rather than accidently flying into cloud and ploughing into a mountain....

@jodypootic Finally! Someone else here thought it looked pretty fun.
PotatoGunsRule 1 year ago
as far as i know from flying. you can go as low as you want over a UNPOPULATED AREA!!! you did fine. me and my friends do it all the time. we love to buzz farmers out in the fields on the eastern shore. awsome vid man
w29bum 1 year ago
@w29bum this is not true there is a min of 500 feet reed up on your regulations bud
youngestpilotinGa 1 year ago
@youngestpilotinGa it doesnt matter. some rules in flying are meant to be broken. who doesnt fly below 500 feet when they have the chance? maybe those that are by the book everytime and dont know how to lighten up and enjoy the freedom of flight.
w29bum 1 year ago
@jaybird42o oh ok....well this idiot has to do really improve to get up to the stupid level.
beergut111 1 year ago
Actually I would check into that again Shortygasp. If it wasn't illegal then it sure as hell would not get you your license, and is therefore a really stupid thing to do.
TheCessnaFan 1 year ago
Noo they are not "Sissy Ass" comments, They are totally correct. You should lose your license for doing that! And a flight instructor setting an example like this is plane messed up and immature. If you catch the wheels in the water, the plane flips, and you won't be alive to tell people not to be retarded and do what you did!
TheCessnaFan 1 year ago
What a bunch of sissy ass comments. you can do more with an airplane than just drive it like a car. Besides their out in the middle of no where. Great video, looks like a hell of a lot of fun.

TTDMFfreaknew 1 year ago
Now thats how you have fun. And for the poster that said its illegal, its not. You can get as low as you like over a non-pop. area. The wheels never touched the water, but if they had you would have flipped and died for sure! A trike gear'ed planes can't ski but a tail-dragger can. But only if the water is VERY calm or directly crosswind so that the wheels dont hit any waves or wake. Very fun to scud-run, but yes, dumb.

you are both idiots. Dont go flying while im out flying, id hate to eat a 150 because you dumbshits are just that stupid.

more like how to flip a cessna if u dip the wheels deeper... your an idiot...
desiang1 1 year ago

TheNeonTide 1 year ago
@TheNeonTide FAA rules in a sparsely populated area is 500ft from persons or property, not above the ground. But the general rule also in the FAR's is an altitude allowing a safe landing without damage to persons or property. So take your pick. I would not do that myself, and certainly not with a student who(obviously) does not know any better.

sendmorebrains 1 year ago
Looked like a fun trip, wouldn't go quite so low myself. As for hazards, a bird strike at that alt would ruin your day and you gotta expect birds that low near water! If the engine packed up you may convert some speed to height but probably only enough to prepare for a ditch, certainly not enough for an attempt at restarting.
Regardless, instead of slagging each other off, try discussing and learn from this.
Peace, out!
svenski59 1 year ago
@svenski59 exactly what i was thinking, high chance of a bird strike. I did this along the gulf coast in my younger days and flew right through a flock of pelicans. I was luck not to hit one.

@beergut111 there is no altitude restrictions over open water
gypsykingg 1 year ago
@gypsykingg so? you dont need a helmet to ride a motorcycle either.....does that make it smart?
this obvioulsy within a sparsly populated area, that means 500ft minimum.
go 1 mile out to sea and you can be dumb all day long. You have a lot to learn about being a professional pilot.
beergut111 1 year ago
@beergut111 haha ook you have a lot of studying to do dummy, how about you ask your instructor to bring his far/aim and look up part 91.119 (c). over other than congested areas an altitude of 500 ft above the surface except over open water and sparsely populated areas. in those cases the aircraft may not be operated within 500 ft of any person, vessel, vehicle or structure. congrats on becoming an idiot. you're a fucking moron. btw im a commercial rated pilot with my instrument rating as well
gypsykingg 1 year ago
@gypsykingg wow a commercial with an instrument rating. few more hours and i would allow you to fly right seat for me. problem there sport is this isnt over open water.
And you are sure there are no people on the ground there......riiiiiiiight
and btw I have an ATP with about a dozen type ratings kid.
bye bye
beergut111 1 year ago
@beergut111 this is open water dumbass, and you sure are some good atp since you didnt even know there is no altitude restristion over sparsely populated areas. you're a fucking idiot and you probably have never stepped foot inside an aircraft
gypsykingg 1 year ago
@gypsykingg i guess you missed the boat they flew by :34....
maybe you shouldnt post anymore, it just makes you look ignorant.
and besides, even if it was over open water, they would be violated for careless and reckless operation.
your apology is accepted kid.
beergut111 1 year ago
@gypsykingg That's all true man and kudos on your ratings but face it: this video is the very reason people want to fly planes. Admit it, you'd love to buzz the tower wouldn't you?
PotatoGunsRule 1 year ago
@beergut111 Hey man, it looks fun and no one got hurt. Only the pilot and student were at risk. It doesn't mean he's going to land a 727 on the interstate to ask directions.
PotatoGunsRule 1 year ago
@beergut111 Why is it people want to turn someone in for some daring? I don't see any bystanders and it looks like the student enjoyed the flight.
PotatoGunsRule 1 year ago
@beergut111 as far as i know this isnt illegal.
you can go below 500 AGL if you have an instructor onboard. Im not saying its a good idea, im just saying it might not be illegal
Iris421989 1 year ago
@Iris421989 this is very illegal....having an instructor on board dont matter. You can only go below 500 ft for takeoff and landing...there is no runway in front of this plane.

You have an instructor with a serious screw loose. Find another instructor immediately. I would also report this person to the FAA as you don't want to find out that another student is killed with the instructor down the road.

craigs1001 1 year ago
You will soon be lower than this. I'd say about another 6 feet under!
All you need is for someone with similar mental health issues to fly in the opposite direction to you and give you a serious case of instrument rash.
You are either suicidal or just stupid, or both.
MrUAV100 1 year ago
Please post the name of the instructor so FAA can take the appropriate action. You obviously think this is cool and you are impressed enough to put it on youtube. This is exactly why this idiot instructor shouldn't be doing it. You will no doubt try and emulate this with one of your mates on board and kill some poor innocent bastard.

@McCabe007 how experienced are you?
3IDLukeK 1 year ago
@3IDLukeK well ive been flying since i was 14 lol im 21 now with about 250 hours in single engine, and advanced single engine, ive flown some aerobatic aircraft which is fun as HELL, dont have that endorsement yet tho, i know what im doing enough to safely have fun, especially when flying low and fast, ALWAYS know where the wind is coming from, especially if your flying in hilly areas, bc if your on the leeward side you could catch a down draft and slam you into the ground
