I have never seen anyone do anything as scary as this. There is never any need to stitch right up to your hand. Please please don't do this. Your hands can be further apart and you never ever need to do this. It is an accident waiting to happen. It's easier to do it more safely.
@sallybramald - Actually my hands really aren't getting very close to the needle at all. Maybe it's the angle of the camera, but it looks much closer than it is in person.
It's always a good idea to use a free motion foot when free motion quilting so you know where your needle is coming down at all times. I really don't think I'm risking my life or limb by free motion quilting the way I do!
