My psychiatrist said to let people know about your problem, but everyone thinks I'm weird and my family cannot understand or take me seriously. He hears voices daily and acts out, but he has gone thru some traumatic life experiences including high stakes gambling in Las Vegas for years using the stongest pot available, Crystal meth abuse and a homosexual relationship that has caused him shame and he was gradually ripped off online gambling for 40K. We are in Texas and cannot find long term care for him. Any advise.

Nobody is remotely interested in ideas of mind anymore, that nonsense was dealt with in the 19th century.
The community now realises that resolving mental illness will not come from pretending the brain isn't there, or that people have conscious control over plasticity in an ill state, which just happens to be a perceived 'transitional phase'.

But there's a difference between the word schizophrenic used as metaphor and used in reference to a specific group off neurological disorders. Schizophrenia provides no insight whatsoever. As for doctors and big pharma, they certainly have plenty of faults. But Western doctors and the drugs they use have helped countless people, far more than any other system of medicine.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, there was a dissident current within psychiatry that argued what you seem to be arguing. Some even referred to the "gift" of schizophrenia. They were wrong. There is a HUGE difference between eccentricity and/or nonconformity and mental illness. They are not even close to the same thing.

Why does the schizophrenic trust the diagnosis? These divisions, externally and in the mind, are the heart of the illness, right?

@leelyndaa You can recover from your illness! I am sure of it!! First, why not eat 100% healthy? Why not drop ALL meat, all animal products from your diet and eat only whole, unprocessed, fresh fuits, veggies, nuts and beans? This is #1. Next, do you think your problem is external? That is, do you think your symptoms are caused by someone or something outside you? You have to be very clear about this! You have to see clearly the truth that your problem is internal, not external.
it was once said 80% of the population has some degree of mental illness. I once got a crisis call where a woman who was hearing voices, talking to people who did not exist. she was off her meds and was up for 11 days straight, when we got there she had suffered a stroke. she did not know it. she was hospitalized and has recovered nicely. i keep thinking what if we would have gotten there on day three maybe she could still use the left side of her body.

I have several friends with severe mental health issues and have found that communication and so some understanding of these people does help. Medication only plays a part of the help but does not prepare them for a life with reduced mental illness so we as a society must help and understand

Pretty much any study that compared no treatment, placebo, psychotherapy, behavioral therapy, and cognitive therapy have shown that psychotherapy is no more effective than placebo while behavioral and cognitive therapy have far greater efficacy.
And your definition of hallucination is wrong. A hallucination is perception in the absence of a stimulus. When you ask someone to imagine something, there is a stimulus.

In regards to hallucinations: How can one be certain of the manner in which particular things exist? Furthermore, to what extent is uncertainty of an external existence irrational, and thus "insane"? My parents were conservative Christians (especially my mother). The knew i was different from an early age, but didn't want to help. I think they were ashamed to have a sick child. Even some of our christian friends thought i was possessed by a demon. i'm still angry at them though. An early diagnosis is very important.
Naturopathics cures these illnesses. It cured my sister. To hell with the drugs! They are poison! But if people are already on them, combined natural cures with the meds is the way. Until the meds can be slowly, professionaly, tapered off.
I'm just wondering how they know whether a person is experiencing hallucinations, surely it is always on the balance of probabilities? I'm studying schizophrenia for my A level exams and would be interested to hear from anyone who has it how they first came into contact with doctors, or if they didn't.

Sometime I keep hearing voices that guide me either positive or negative thought through my entire life. I want the voice to "back off" but I did not know what to do. Obviously I keep shouting "back off" at the voice but the voice still echoed in my mind. What should I do? Should I take prescribe medication? Will there be side effect to it?
hmm I clicked on this expecting an advocacy of psychiatry and was pleasantly surprised. You Dr, accept relgious, spiritual and social causes of hallucinations... this is good. You are pretty balanced. I suppoesedly have schizophrenia, and receive a hella lot of stigma due to my diagnosis. Yet my hallicinations have pretty much all been precognitions of the future, either pleasurable, or bad, (fear) I have found psychiatry to not work however and be fundamentaly flawed. Not a bad vid balanced
However, I should mention that my Schizo-type PD has been so very much easier for me to handle after smoking weed! It calms me down, eases anxiety over social situations to the point where I'm actually wanting to interact with others more, gives me exceptional sleep, improves my depression & stimulates my appetite during depression.
I'm not saying to stop your medication & start smoking weed. I'm not a doctor. But, from personal experience, I've found weed to do nothing but help me manage.

I agree with the notion that schizophrenics can benefit from verbal therapy and other non-medical related therapy. there is a book titled, "The Center Cannont Hold," it was written by a professor at USC who has dealt with Schizophrenia her whole life. One profound aspect is how she said verbal communication with her therapist really helped her re-attach to life and reality. It reminded her that she is a person and that people do care. It's such a simple concept but carries a lot of weight.

Nobody is remotely interested in ideas of mind anymore, that nonsense was dealt with in the 19th century.
The community now realises that resolving mental illness will not come from pretending the brain isn't there, or that people have conscious control over plasticity in an ill state, which just happens to be a perceived 'transitional phase'.

But there's a difference between the word schizophrenic used as metaphor and used in reference to a specific group off neurological disorders. Schizophrenia provides no insight whatsoever. As for doctors and big pharma, they certainly have plenty of faults. But Western doctors and the drugs they use have helped countless people, far more than any other system of medicine.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, there was a dissident current within psychiatry that argued what you seem to be arguing. Some even referred to the "gift" of schizophrenia. They were wrong. There is a HUGE difference between eccentricity and/or nonconformity and mental illness. They are not even close to the same thing.

The whole concept of psychiatry was developed well before 1900 in Germany to get rid of people complaining. The first use of directed energy weapons can be recognized in psychiatric literature from 1908. You find it in chapter Psychiatrie-->Klinik der Narkolepsie on my homepage. it was once said 80% of the population has some degree of mental illness. I once got a crisis call where a woman who was hearing voices, talking to people who did not exist. she was off her meds and was up for 11 days straight, when we got there she had suffered a stroke. she did not know it. she was hospitalized and has recovered nicely. i keep thinking what if we would have gotten there on day three maybe she could still use the left side of her body.

I have several friends with severe mental health issues and have found that communication and so some understanding of these people does help. Medication only plays a part of the help but does not prepare them for a life with reduced mental illness so we as a society must help and understand

Pretty much any study that compared no treatment, placebo, psychotherapy, behavioral therapy, and cognitive therapy have shown that psychotherapy is no more effective than placebo while behavioral and cognitive therapy have far greater efficacy.
And your definition of hallucination is wrong. A hallucination is perception in the absence of a stimulus. When you ask someone to imagine something, there is a stimulus.

In regards to hallucinations: How can one be certain of the manner in which particular things exist? Furthermore, to what extent is uncertainty of an external existence irrational, and thus "insane"? My parents were conservative Christians (especially my mother). The knew i was different from an early age, but didn't want to help. I think they were ashamed to have a sick child. Even some of our christian friends thought i was possessed by a demon. i'm still angry at them though. An early diagnosis is very important.

Naturopathics cures these illnesses. It cured my sister. To hell with the drugs! They are poison! But if people are already on them, combined natural cures with the meds is the way. Until the meds can be slowly, professionaly, tapered off.

I'm just wondering how they know whether a person is experiencing hallucinations, surely it is always on the balance of probabilities? I'm studying schizophrenia for my A level exams and would be interested to hear from anyone who has it how they first came into contact with doctors, or if they didn't.

seems to me that some people could be extremely sensitive to tones and frequency,,,look how these techno or I DOSING tones affect people,,,the tones cause your eyes to blink involuntarily and cause you to go into a rem like state,,,,we are mostly made up of water,,,,and water vibrates into different shapes based on tones,,,tone and frequency is the key to the universe

Sometime I keep hearing voices that guide me either positive or negative thought through my entire life. I want the voice to "back off" but I did not know what to do. Obviously I keep shouting "back off" at the voice but the voice still echoed in my mind. What should I do? Should I take prescribe medication? Will there be side effect to it?

hmm I clicked on this expecting an advocacy of psychiatry and was pleasantly surprised. You Dr, accept relgious, spiritual and social causes of hallucinations... this is good. You are pretty balanced. I suppoesedly have schizophrenia, and receive a hella lot of stigma due to my diagnosis. Yet my hallicinations have pretty much all been precognitions of the future, either pleasurable, or bad, (fear) I have found psychiatry to not work however and be fundamentaly flawed. Not a bad vid balanced

However, I should mention that my Schizo-type PD has been so very much easier for me to handle after smoking weed! It calms me down, eases anxiety over social situations to the point where I'm actually wanting to interact with others more, gives me exceptional sleep, improves my depression & stimulates my appetite during depression.
I'm not saying to stop your medication & start smoking weed. I'm not a doctor. But, from personal experience, I've found weed to do nothing but help me manage.

I agree with the notion that schizophrenics can benefit from verbal therapy and other non-medical related therapy. there is a book titled, "The Center Cannont Hold," it was written by a professor at USC who has dealt with Schizophrenia her whole life. One profound aspect is how she said verbal communication with her therapist really helped her re-attach to life and reality. It reminded her that she is a person and that people do care. It's such a simple concept but carries a lot of weight.
