i think frank miller is a better artist/writer than alan moore... and it makes me mad that people obsess over moore but the reason is he adds all these characters that arent imporotant. and his storys dilute so much that its tedious. although. it may be the artists fault... which i do believe really contributes.
@joker9494949494 I'd say people obsess over Moore because he's the William Blake of comics and is a better writer than nearly anyone else in this medium, I can't ever imagine Miller as having created something as multilayered as the world of Watchmen, if Moore never had written anything else the impact he had with Watchmen on the comicbook is only comparable to the impact that Citizen Kane had on film.
@cha5 watchmen used the same ideas as Dark knight Returns which came out years before.
1) vigilantes illegal and only one all powerful remains, superman (DKR) and dr manhattan(watchmen).
2) cold war raging on, a missle actually hits in DKR.
3)one vigilante returns out of retirement for moral reasons.
etc etc. its kind of annoying actualy, not to mention miller steals is ideas but he does a decent amount of new dialogue, ill give him that. V for Vendetta came from 1984, its obvious.
@joker9494949494 Not really except for surface similarities and TDKR came out several months before Watchmen, if you recall Watchmen ran as a limited series from 1986-1987
1. Watchmen dissected the very meaning of the superhero, how a Batman like costume would not be all that practical in crime fighting, the original Night Owl's cape giving him trouble, and an associate of his being shot dead because his cape got caught in a revolving door.
2. The superhero changes everything on planet earth
from Nixon winning a second term, to America winning the Vietnam war, to advancing our technology at a rapid rate, to America being the sole superpower thanks to Dr Manhattan.
3, Moore explores the basic fact that a commited costumed vigilante in real life ala Rorschach would be a psychopath
4, V For Vendetta was a commentary on Thatcherite England and what Moore thought of it, plus fascism vs anarchy not robot submission to Big Brother.
@cha5 meant Moore steals his ideas btw, mishap on my part. but still those are simple ideas. he got credit for "revolutionizing" comics when adams and miller started it.
@joker9494949494 Nothing about Watchmen is "simple" not the fact that he wrote a comic within a comic and the fact that he and Gibbons created their own world that was just as structured as anything Moorcock gave us with a multiverse, Watchmen was far more complex and than anything Miller or Adams gave us. A big factor that went into the creation of Watchmen was the Charlton superheros and the Three Penny Opera, see Tales Of The Black Freighter.
@joker9494949494 Also Moore's influence in revolutionizing comics goes more in the Will Eisner / Harvey Kurtzman route, not Neal Adams & Frank Miller.
I believe Moore himself said he wanted to do with Watchmen what Harvey Kurtzman and Wally Wood did with SuperDuperman in Mad back in the 1950s, how the concept of the superhero would conflict with reality,
no super powers? the people in the novel that are supposed to be super heroes DO have powers, they are just not really unique powers. they are just gifted with super human levels of athleticism, durability, and strength.
it's cool I started reading today im in chapter 2 and the smiley face represents a clock and the blood if you look closely is an arrow of the clock and it is pointing 5 minutes to midnight just like the doomsday clock
I gotta say that I love the style it's animated in... when you see someone get beaten you can't help but symphatize because they just look kind in a certain charm...
This was actually published as a series of 12 monthly comic books. A lot of popular graphic novels were as well. If you want to read something written as a graphic novel, try something like "Asterios Polyp", or "American Born Chinese."
I saw V for Vendetta and I was wondering, should I read the graphic novel? I thought the movie was great but I can't decide if I should get the graphic novel. Any advice?
a comic book store. They will have a whole bunch of stuff in comic book stores. he is a tip: dont buy comic books/graphic novels/dvds/videogames at walmart!
Not exactly a very good review, to be honest. You just sort of ramble on about pointless things like the cover. Seriously, just write the review out in advance.

not really, it is kinda meant to be that they're not so it shows the reader that the "heroes" are just normal people and not superhuman ones
