  • I can't tell you how much I appreciate your research. I have had my sleep study done and am reluctant to proceed with the wearing of the mask. You have helped me make the right choice.

  • @ladytrish51 Thanks. It has been a life saver. If I didn't have insurance I would probably be dead by now.

  • I just had my sleep study last night. The lady couldn't tell me what I had or how many events I had but, she did say, oh they will probably be calling you back, so I took that as I probably do have sleep apnea I have the symptoms too, thanks for sharing your story and the test results, I hope you are getting better sleep now!

  • Hey i knw how u feel.ive jst got my test,i was gobsmack

  • All you gotta do is lose 10% of your body weight!!!!

  • @iwatcher69 It usually affects over weight people. Some are not over weight and losing 10 % of your body weight or even 20% which would leave skin and bones will not help. Your health and life is at stake so it is best to stay with the advice of a Dr. Each case is different.

  • @hiway280z

well, that's what my doctor told me and it worked.

  • Hey you should try out the new CPAP PILLOW from Contour. I just started using mine and it made it much easier for me to sleep on my side with my CPAP mask. My insurance company is forcing me to use the teatment everynight with proof and my new pillow made things much more comfortable at night. I had to get the high profile pillow because the standard was too thin and it cost me nothing. My insurance paid for the whole thing, it was absolutely FREE!!!

    Happy sleeping

  • @bsalyers89 500 hundred times may be a bit of an exaggeration. The way they constitute an event is trouble breathing (apnea or hypopnea) for at least 10 seconds. since there are only 60 seconds in a minute, you can only have a max of 6 events a minute. And there's only 60 minutes in an hour... so you could only have a AHI (Apnea-Hypopnea Index) of 360 events in an hour max, that is if you sleep that entire time, which isn't likely because you're brain will sometimes wake you up to breathe. CPAP!

  • hey, awesome interpretation of your results. Im a sleep tech like vlad. If seen how cpap can really change a persons life in many ways. By treating sleep apnea, people get their energy back, blood pressure, high cholesterol decreases etc. Its awesome that you are informing the public about this! by the way..just to educate a lil bit. rem sleep is actually deeper sleep than stage 3 sleep. The reason you got so much rem sleep is because you were rem deprived, no wonder you felt exhausted!

  • @civicadam thank you for the correction on rem sleep. I thought rem was the deepest and the one you really need the most. I understand also that is when you dream and that stage is absolutely necessary for your health.

  • Hello, My husband, has also apnea do You sleep on your back or on your side? My husband was sleeping on his back when he had the apneas.

And,.. do you still sleep on your back with the cpap??

    Pls let me know

    Bye mary

  • @MooiVrouwNL

Just throwin this in there, anyone who has apnea or hypopneas (or both), the frequency and severity of them becomes much greater when they sleep on their back. The tongue plays a part in obstructing the airway by sliding back in the throat and making it that much harder for people to breathe. Sleeping on your side helps clear your airway from blockage which lessens the apnea you may have. Sleeping with your head elevated helps alot also b/c it relieves the pressure on the airway.

  • @MooiVrouwNL Use the cpap no matter how you sleep, side back what ever

  • I got that machine but I'm not using it. It makes me worse & I even panic. I will call them later and ask for a different mask, that is the one that cover the nose & the mouth. It's funny how my nose wistle, but it also burns inside my nose. I hope they'll help me.

  • .I can understnd your issues as I also went throguh what youa re goin through. As a sleep tech , I would reccomend a new mask for comfort depending if you a mouth breather you may need a full face mask. And as far as the burning sensation, the humidyfyer would help with that. Keep in mind that this will improve ones quality of life.

  • ...Having a positive mentality is a very important part of acclimating to the CPAP therapy...You have to understand that you will benifit, I also understand that CPAP is not for everyone ...But stay focused, and understand the Doc would not send u home with a machine that would do u wrong....

  • Also ther is a RAMP feature setting on the machine...The ramp strts pressure @ the lowest setting and will increase to the prescribed pressure on whatewver time u set it to...This will give you time to get to sleep without having all that pressur eblowing @ once...Either way , like my ol'man tells me all the time....Get over it and jus do it

  • Thanks for answering back.

I only use it as a treatment, like when I'm in the PC or watching tv. However, when I go to sleep I don't but yet, get those episodes of sleep apnea. I recalled one last night in which I suddently stop but for some reason I woke up just as fast & recovered. My wife turned the lights on, asked the stupid question: "Are you Ok?, then, she goes: "Why you're lips are blue?I look in the mirror, it wasn't blue, it was more like violet, but it went away.

  • Yes!, it went away just like my heart rate went down. Anyway, since I was having a hard time to breath, I used the inhaler proventil and my heart rate went up again.

I have this noise, sort of like snoring, that comes from the middle of my chest as if I have too much phlegm, but no matter how hard I try with force coughing, I can't get anything out other than air & may be, just a little phlegm which is either grey or clear with bubbles & tiny blood dropplets.

    I hate asthma!.

  • Hmmmmm....I ve never heard of someone using the treatment during wake time such as CPU , or watching tv....Of the 6 yrs doin sleepstudies, I was always tought to use for sleep only....and yes Astma sucks..lol lips turning blue or violet is sighns of hypoxia. I would strongly suggest following up with the doc and maybe you pressure needs to be re adjusted...Either way stick wit it man...

ps...this is my new handle name , I was hardmouthpitt before...

  • The first time I had the sleep test at some point something went wrong because I just simply stop breathing. That was, in my opinion, a combination of both: "Sleep apnea & an asthma attack". I had everything with me (wires attached to my head, etc). It was horrible & weird. I remember a tunnel in which I was going through, but instead of forward, I was going backwards. Then, the tech showed up with a flashlight & told me he saw the whole thing. I think I know what happened.

  • The tech in addition to attaching the wires to my Head & chest, he attached 2 tubes in each nostrils, but they were long & made my breathing harder & even harder when he added the mask on top of it.

On the second test, I told him about it & he cut the tubes shorter and yes; I slept better & with better results.

My current concern is how to clean the hose that attach to the machine and to the mask.

  • the hose can be cleaned with a mild dish detergent and hung dry over the showere curtain...These need to be cleaned after each use if ur sick..If allis good then u can clean every 2 wereks or so...Also if you use a humidifyer be sure to clean out as well due to the water being a breeding ground for bacteria..

  • Im a RPSGT ( sleep technician) Im happy you are enjoying the CPAP. The hatrd part is getting used to , but overall having a positive mindset is a key.

  • hi there, i am getting a cpap, how did it go on getting used to it,? do you enjoy better sleep and are you more energetic? i loved the video's.

  • Hi. It took a while to get used to it. If you can't get used to the mask you have, make sure you ask for a different one. I found the nasal pillow mask worked best for me, but it was the third one I tried before I found one that worked. It takes a while, but yes, I am able to stay awake all day, sit through a whole movie without dozing off, drive more safely. For me, the cpap is a life safer.

  • I cried on the way home it was emotional for me to know just how bad my standard of sleep was in comparison. I can't wait to get my machine.

  • I'm 23 years old and I had a sleep study done and found out that in the 3 hour and half hours of sleep i got in the first test I had 367 sleep disturbances vast majority apneas and lesser hypopnea. after informing my family of the test results I found out the my grandfather who past away about 5 years ago now was listed as Complications due to sleep apnea. I was scared to death. I wwent back for the cpap fitting and slept better than i have in atleast 3 years.

  • Phil, I am scheduled to go have my sleep study done in less than a week. I came across this video series and I'm so glad I did. Knowing what's ahead for me makes it that much less stressful. No suprizes thanks to you. My anxiety has gone down tremendously about the whole thing. Keep it up!

  • Good luck with your test. Getting the cpap machine has completely changed (perhaps saved) my life.

  • Making the videos helped me to get through it. The YT community has been very supportive.

  • YIKES PHIL!!! 129?? AMAZING. I fear going to find out myself because I KNOW it's up there someplace as well. I should go - but I'm not sure I want to know. Though NOT knowing could be fatal. I HOPE the CPAP machine works for you. I have two friends here at work on the machines and they swear by them. YOU DO lose LIFE and TIME not sleeping well because it puts the strain on your heart and system so it's a reality we all should be aware of and do something about. ME INCLUDED. GREAT information

  • Tony, it makes a huge difference. I have energy, feel better and don't fall asleep at my desk anymore. I can watch movies, read, listen to music, which I couldn't do before without falling asleep. And I can tell that my baseline health is improving. I put if off until my heart was stopping. It could have been too late.

  • Phill I am going to be that one to get help because of your videos. I made a Dr appt today to get my sleep lab test set up. I just have not wanted to face it but all I want to do is sleep and I am so tired even when I wake up. Your videos have help me to realize that I need to get help. Thank you so much!

  • That's great. Keep me posted on how you are doing.

  • I am feeling much more rested. Almost human again.

  • I work in a sleep lab and I'm enthralled by your videos! You have such an excellent grasp of the meaning of your results. Amazing. Since you weren't sure: MA is Mixed Apnea and CH would be Central Hypopnea. Mixed apnea is where the pause in breathing begins as central (no effort to breathe seen in chest or abdomen belts & no airflow) and changes to obstructive (effort in belts, but no airflow) part way through. Obstructive issues are generally more common than central or mixed.

  • I made a comment earlier and it didn't seem to take. What I said was... You and your colleagues are doing great work. You make peoples lives a lot better and surely you save a few along the way. If I had continued on, I think I would have died from it. Thank you.

  • There ya' go. My biPap has changed my life. Congratulations.

  • One week plus and all is still good.

  • That is great news Phil! Praise science. ;)

I hope the machine works wonders for your sleep and energy levels.

  • Indeed. I prayed for sleep and it never came. But science has saved me. I am now in oxygen heaven.

  • Here's to deep sleep and a rested and restored Phil!!!

  • Soon I will have no excuses!

  • "Once they got me breathing, my heart was pretty steady." You put it so calmly ;^)

    Great video series.

  • I have become pretty good at objectifying my health issues. I have no "white coat" syndrome, but sometimes fear is a good motivator.

  • Wow, what an amazing difference the CPAP machine made. I hope it continues to help you in your quest for good sleeping patterns and improved health as a result.

  • The difference is amazing. Now I need to lose weight and get a face lift... :)

  • Alarming and amazing.

I can't wait to hear about the continuing stories and the results of your treatment. I was telling a co-worker about your videos and everything that you were going through today and she told me that she had a friend who got this treatment and the cpap machine and it changed her life. She lost 50 lbs in the first few months and made a big step towards getting back into good health.

  • On the other hand, the husband of the same co-worker has sleeping issues and a cpap machine, as well. He, however, never used his machine after the first few nights, claiming that it didn't help. I have a feeling that the machine wasn't titrated properly or he just didn't give it a chance. Thanks to your videos and your results, she is going to push him to get tested again and give it another go. Good luck, Phil!

  • I don't know how I got along without it. He may have had the wrong type of machine or mask or it wasn't adjusted properly. He should stick with it. It can save his life.

  • Wow. Thanks for posting these. Very insightful. Hope the cpap helps you get your life back.

  • I am coming back to life.

  • glad you're taking control of your life and i hope it works out for you

    take care

  • Thanks for your support. I have been given a real opportunity here. I hope I use it well.

  • I would be tickled if these videos helped someone. My main reason for doing them was to objectify the experience (to a degree) to alleviate some of the anxiety. I had a project, something to do, so I wasn't just passive.

  • Thanks for those videos Phil, they were fascinating. Those figures of yours were quite frightening.

I'm glad you've now got a proper diagnosis & are sorting out your problem.

I look forward to seeing the next instalment.

As somebody else has pointed out. I've never seen this subject tackled on TV before.

It once again proves how informative YouTube can be & the personal angle really brings it home :)

  • Thanks for watching, Andy. This problem is more widespread than I ever knew. Considering the health implications, I am surprised the medical profession doesn't make some type of screening for sleep apnea standard operating procedure.

  • Sorry, my intention wasn't to argue here. But I just couldn't pass that up -- you credit God, with absolute certainty ('God /clearly/ kept...'), for FB still being alive. If you feel that God had his hand in this, then that is your viewpoint and that is just fine, but that doesn't make it a statement of fact. :)

Statement of Opinion: 'I think God kept you alive...'

Statement of Fact: 'God clearly kept you alive...'

  • I am. Science has performed the miracle that Jesus couldn't.

  • I don't know how often I need to get re-evaluated, but I know it is a good idea to do so from time to time. Things do change and you want to have the right pressure. Too little and you don't get all of the efficacy. Too much and you can develop pulmonary hypertension.

  • I am amazed how resilient the body is. I won't argue whether or not I was kept alive for a purpose, but I do feel an obligation to myself and others to use my time well as I recover and do useful and good things (and some useless and fun ones too:).

  • I was less tired in this vid, and getting better each day.

  • It is an amazing thing. I think whoever invented it should win the Nobel Prize.

  • So glad you had this done. We want you around!

    (((Hugs)))

    ~Mimi

  • Thank you so much.

  • Thank you for showing us your results. My Husband need to do this. I just have to give him a BIG push! He has to sleep with the TV on and something tells me he'll be up all night.

    (((Hugs)))

    ~Mimi

  • Tell him I said that it is worth it. Finally getting a good night of sleep after all these years is amazing.

  • So informative! Thanks for sharing all of this, Phil. I'm curious about the cpap machine. I saw you try it on in Vlad's lab--it looked really uncomfortable. Almost like an old World War II gas mask or something. Will you be able to turn normally, as people do, in your sleep when you're wearing it?

  • I can turn, but it is more efficient if you stay put because turning can create leaks in the mask. It is lightweight, and not too uncomfortable. Since starting it I am sleeping on my back all night, which I was never able to do.

  • Wow.. that is amazing. I am glad you are on the right road now. How scary :(

(why did I not get the other parts for your test - grr)

  • Yes, it was scary. I think keeping it clinical and scientific helps me keep a little objective distance so I don't get manic over how unhealthy I have been.

  • So good to hear that the test showed what you suspected as well as hearing that you are getting the machine. One other point--about losing weight. Did you know that people are way more successful with diet and exercise when they get at least seven hours of sleep a night? Do keep us in the loop. I am fascinated.

  • I have been told that many people lose weight after starting on the cpap treatment. I am hopeful.

  • It's incredible! Don't be sad you didn't took care about it before, i'm sure there's a lot of people that never do something to change the situation and you did. Now it's time to get well because i need a guide next year! lol

    Hug!

  • I'll be here waiting with open arms, Felix.

  • hello Andy!

  • Amazing stuff. Thanks for continuing to share.Very educational.

  • Thanks for watching.

  • its good to see that things seem to be going well for you! :D you did a great job explaining this,if it was me id have guessed and said hey look at this :D lol, you looked a little like a president in your glasses :) maybe now with not sleeping hile on the can,you can put yourself up maybe? ;)

  • President of what, though? I am president of my apartment. How's that?

  • haha pretty good! i ment that maybe you looked a little like franklyn, though im probabally hugly wrong, my memory isnt as good as some haha :)

  • Franklin was never president. He is the only person to appear on American money who wasn't.

  • urmm...roosvelt? (im not spelling that right lol) i dont know, pick one haha, sorry,i only ever ment that as a compliment :(

  • As long as it isn't BUSH!!!!

  • haha nothing wrong with a bit of world dominion phil! or a nice set of crayons...

  • I'm glad you're on the track towards better health. Keep smiling.

  • Thanks Chris. The ends of my mouth are starting to turn up a bit:)

  • Wow, this is so brilliant that you have been putting this out there for people to see. Glad you are getting somewhere with the technology.

  • Thanks for your interest and support.

  • im glad you went in for this , sleep apnea is a silent killer , its great that we have these

things to protect us from this . i hope now , you can have the good health from here on out , im glad you are making this series.

  • Thanks for your support Tommy. I can breathe again, which is amazing.

  • i hope you feel better phil.o yah your a super hottie.

  • Thanks! I am starting to feel better already. You are too kind, stud.

  • Yikes. Pretty amazing stuff there. I'm glad this is getting worked out for you. Real curious how your going to feel after a week or so, If your anything like my friends dad you'll be doing freaking cartwheel down the middle of the road! LOL

  • No cartwheels yet, but I did take the stairs instead of the elevator coming out of the subway today. And I noticed the cute boys on the train this morning, which I had stopped doing. We all have our markers for progress.

  • Ok buddy you 2 weeks then I wanna see Barbara do the cartwheels though central park! lol

  • Damn man, good thing you got in to get checked out. I hope everything goes well with your CPAP -- my grandpa has sleep apnea, but he can't handle sleeping with the machine.

  • I was so miserable I just decided the machine wasn't going to be a problem. Either I embrace it, or die.

  • Why do you instantly feel the need to attribute this to God?

  • did he?

  • I'm so happy for you dude. I love my CPAP, it changed my life. Technology is so great these days. Prepair for a whole new you.

  • I love mine too. It's not as cuddly as a cat, but it certainly does a lot more for me :)

  • my cat got used to my CPAP and now I have both :-) Life doesn't get much better than this!

  • Wonderful, informative videos, Like I said before, my C-PAP machine is my best friend! You will get used to it and wonder how you ever did without it! It's all about the attitude you go into it with. I went into it happy that they found something to help me, not dreading that I might look like Snuffleupagus when I sleep. lol Its a small price to pay.

    Joanie

  • I had a little skin irritation the first night, but I adjusted the straps and it was better the second night. I am having no problems sleeping with it on. Quite the opposite. And fortunately I don't care what I look like when I sleep.

  • lol me either

  • Sounds like the machine is too good to be true.

    Wow.

Things are going to turn around now!

  • I know. I might think I was overstating it out of gratitude for any relief, but the data doesn't lie. It really is effective.

  • very informative...my mother is scheduled for the same procedure next month....I hope we get some answers as well.....thank you for sharing..

    take care

  • Good luck to your mother. Tell her there is relief out there.

  • In Canada the machine was $1700 and the face mask $300. Insurance covered the machine but the mask I must pay for. I use a MedRes type that has a silicon nose piece that works like a diaphram with little pressure on the face. I found the same mask online for $125 in the U.S. so I'll be buying online next time. I think you will be surprised at how fast you get used to the mask. Sweet dreams.

  • I wonder why the price difference?

  • The proprietor who sold me the mask informed me that when the machine was approved to be paid for under our provincial health plan the cost was doubled. As for the mask I assume it is simple greed.I think there may be a correlation between the price of an object and it's need to save or sustain life. Pay the price or die, a great marketing program.

  • I think you may have a point there.

  • Sweettttt =) good to see ya going to be ok =)

  • I have to stay alive so I can see more Java videos!

  • Haha, Thanks Mr Babblings =)

    Keeping it Haning Bud =)

  • Thank you for doing this series. It's informative, motivational, and thorough. I think you ought to be featured for this. Looking forward to the coming videos!

  • Thank you. Doing the videos has helped me tremendously too. I am getting so much support that it motivates me.

  • I was diagnosed a couple months ago with 156 apneas an hour. My pressure is so high that I must have a bipap, which is actually easier than the cpap I originally had. My problem is that I can't keep it on longer than a couple hours, three at the most. Lots of reasons, claustrophobia, mouthbreather, wake up to use the BR and take it off, skin irritations, mask leaks. I am determined to make it work, but it has been a struggle. Some of my videos talk about it. Good luck to you.

  • Oh, dear, 156. You must make it work. Have you contacted your provider about the mask problems? Maybe they can work with you to make it better. Does your mask cover just the nose or the nose and mouth? Have you tried the mask with the gel cushion? There are many options and it's worth the effort to get the right one. Good luck to you, too.

  • Mind-blowing. I'm stunned you're alive too, Phil. I thought it would be severe, but those results are insane! I'm glad that you've gotten the help that you need, however, and I hope you now get many nights of blissful sleep :)

  • It is amazing. I am sleeping straight through the night without interruption and waking up refreshed. Who knew?

  • Told ya.

    ;-{)

  • Phil, you've really affected me with this. I don't know how bad mine is, but I know I have been exhausted for months now - waking up and feeling more tired than when I went to bed. Of course, I've been blowing that off as dealing with grief and gaining 30 pounds in the last year, but now I am convinced that I need to go through with my sleep study. AND I'm going to lose the 30 pounds, just in case.

Thank you for having the courage to share this. As always, you have my complete respect.

  • Brian you have to take care of it asap. I have been on the cpap two nights and I can already tell a difference. I have much more energy and alertness. I used to sit at work and wonder what I was going to eat when I got home. Now I am looking past that to the pleasure of another good night's sleep. If you are exhausted and have gained weight, go deal with it right away.

And let us know how things go.

    I blow you a kiss...

  • Congratulations. I am so glad the CPAP made all the difference. No surgery, no meds, who can ask for anything more?

I am not going to lecture but I will mention eating healthy and smoking. You know the rest.

As always, I wish you only the best things life has to offer.

  • Yes, I know. Eating healthy is key. I quit smoking in 1986. Only Beverly smokes now. She's had three semi-partial cigarettes in her entire life :)

  • Your results are scary - I'm glad you've got the CPAP now.

  • I think everything is going to be okay.

  • Kind thoughts to you as you begin this new phase, getting used to the CPAP machine. I hope it bring dramatic postive changes to the quality of your life.

  • Thank you. The changes have started already.

  • That's so amazing, Phil. You must have such hope now.

  • I feel like a new person. The recovery has definitely begun. Thanks for all your concern, Boomer.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this! I am soooo glad you had the sleep test! OMG, those are startling results. As you get more comfortable with the CPAP machine, you will finally be able to get a good night's sleep and kick up your heels during the day! My father has one and it made a world of difference for him, and I wish the same for you!

  • After two nights on the machine, I can tell a difference already. And it isn't too uncomfortable.

  • very very good you took action on this (probably without a choice). Your chart is a bit different from my sisters, i am curious to see how they compared... It will be a relief to see you gain your health back from some restful nights of breathing!! Here's to your HEALTH!

  • Thanks. Health is absolutely important.

  • Congratulations on following through. The test results were fascinating. I'll be watching to hear how you do once you begin using the machine - no just how you sleep, but also how you feel once you begin getting regular good quality sleep. Thanks for going to the trouble to post all this!

  • I hope to have the cpap video up in a day or two. Things are looking up.

  • Wow that's sort of startling information, breathing and having a heart rate are usually things that are sort of important... The graph is fascinating to say the least; thanks for explaining it.

I'm happy for you Phil, that was a relatively simple and cheap process towards relief.

    Take care,

    Dustin

  • I actually made a mistake interpreting the heart rate data. The times I thought it had stopped was just a communications failure of the equipment. Otherwise I think my reading of the data is fairly good for an amateur. I had heart stoppage a couple of weeks ago but not on the sleep test.

Still, the data indicates an extreme situation which is fast improving with cpap.

  • As you said though, even with the slight misinterpretation of the data, you still had a pretty 'unique' situation.

What counts is you're getting better by the day now. I'll be looking to more fantastic babblings, Phil

    Take care,

    Dustin

  • My mother AND father have sleep apnea. I'm glad you're ok. Good to know you're so involved with this...you really have to be, especially when it comes to your life :) Thanks for taking us along, it's good for awareness

  • Thanks, and I hope your parents are doing well with their treatment. So far, it is going well for me.
