  • es la mejor !!!!!!!!!!!!! porque ella siente la musica en el corazon eso es lo que la hace ser buena. cuando la musica te apasiona te hace hacer cosas extraordinarias

  • she looks SO happy

  • 1:43 TENSE

  • Es la mejor cellistaaaa del mundooooooooooooo!!! La mejoooooor! me encanta! *.* mi idoloo!!

  • @majitootorres Era. Fallecio en 1987. QEPD.

  • VERY cheeky extra note at 1:56 ;-) Oh Du Pre I think I love you!

  • 7 people are:

    1) Trolls

    2) Deaf

    3) Retarded

  • this should have a million views!!!!!!

  • Jacqueline duPré was in the world of instruments what Maria Callas was in the opera. Uncomparable, unic and immortal through their recordings,

  • the camerawork for this is amazing.. they dont do TV like this anymore

  • There can never be another Jackie

  • Bloody magicial

  • What a dramatic movement!

  • her passion and artistry is inspiring

  • It's beautiful!

  • 7 people were bombed out of their minds watching this...

  • Just phenomenal, what a gorgeous musician. You feel each note shaking your soul in ways impossible. Just beautiful, thank you for everything. I have a M.S. and your gift inspire me to carry on. You're gone but never forgotten ^_^

  • @thiagoheiner

you have expressed wonderfully what all of us think and feel. Thanks a lot!

  • whoever disliked this have no taste in music.

  • 4:00 I love Barenboim's hair :D

    boing boing boing

  • Her hair is epic from 1:45 to 2:00. : ]

  • it's soooooo saaaaadddd >((((((

  • how old is she here?

  • At 41 I feel like I've wasted my entire life listening to garbage. This is beyond words.

I can no longer call anyone an artist without comparing them to her first and they all fall woefully short by comparison.

  • Times like these is where you want to practice more... or just quit playing

  • The whole thing makes me weep. Am I becoming a silly, sentimental old fool?

  • 5:00 - bring on the power of the cello!

  • Everyone agrees that this piece is Triple so GREAT O.O

  • At 1:43, when she hits the high note, she looks like she's possessed by the music. It's wonderful, how emotional she makes it... I want to play this someday!!!

  • @ChucklezTM Yes, the note at 1:43 is played with so much passion. I think I cried the first time I saw (and heard) this movement and since then I have yet to hear another performer play the cello with as much passion as J. I've heard Yo Yo Ma play this but he just doesn't reach the level of emotion that J does here.

  • @alpal1966 Lol.

  • @alpal1966 Yoyo Ma is great too, but the Elgar concerto belongs to J and no one has yet been able to take it away from her. That's a really tough feat for future professional musicians to conquer, and I'm not sure if it will ever really happen. She just did this so well. There's no way. No. Way. This is already way too good.

  • Till this day I hadn't a too good opinion about Elgar, but this piece is a mastership !

Jacquline Dupré is divine. BTW, was she related to the organist Marcel Dupré ?

  • at 4:56 the head toss for the rest of the orchestra! she couldn't help it! too cute for for words

  • or Untie lols

  • This is one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard. After playing it in an orchestra, I had to look it up! And I'm glad I did. This is beautiful. I'm brought to tears. ;_;

  • man, just think of the hours she had to put it... amazing

  • i love the cello/bass bit at 4:58

soo much fun to play omg :-D

  • Can she do no wrong? I mean, wow, she's a beast!

  • this is my favorite movement is sublime, phenomenal, powerful, has it all.

  • The bittersweet note that pierces at 2:59 (and the twenty seconds of passion that precedes it) are quite possibly some of the best playing I have ever heard.

  • Wow... how does she DO that at 4:12?!

  • the question is more: WHAT is she doing :)

  • @UltimateCellist That part isn't actually hard just chords the right bow technique. The hard part is actually the section right before it with the 16th notes

  • @philipjrichardson Check out the live recording with Barenboim and Philadelphia c. 1970 or so.

  • Don't forget Fournier - probably the best of all.

  • she went to my conservertoire!

favourite cellist of all time, possibly a favourite musician of all time. a great ambassador for music, her music is just AMAZING

  • She is absolutly adorable.

  • Please forgive my ignorance, but is jacqueline du pre using a score paper??

  • A solo never use a score paper when he plays in public for a concerto (for a sonata it's different).

    You are forgiven.

What a wonderful and sensitive job !

Just love this concerto and the way she plays it ! It's just awesome !

  • She gives the Stradivarius all the justice it deserves! She makes that cello really SING!

  • Wonderful!!

  • this entire concerto is so incredible

  • She really lives the music she plays.

  • owch, wow, you people are relentless. i do think that ma exaggerates and we can all tell. but you still have to love the guy.. i mean, he is a living legend, since he was around the time of du Pre, and Rostropovich. I'm seeing him in concert!

but I love du Pre. she is my favorite; she left us way too early. the Elgar was her most prized jewel, in my opinion, she mastered it so.

  • agreed.

in my opinion, they all play the same pieces and shiz, but they're all so different as to how they play it and du pre, rostropovich and yo yo ma are 3 of my favourites.

they're just brilliant. how they change tempo, how much emotion they show. its all different.

  • lol they messed up on 4:59

  • yo yo ma is such a wannabe

  • no way! i agree yo-yo ma is a terrific musicain, but there is no beating du pre!

  • are you serious? yo yo ma FAKES his passion? okay you are just a musical genius aren't you...?

  • You're right, "fakes" isn't really what I was going for. I guess exaggerates is more toward what I meant.

  • Wow. What a disgusting, unecessary and totally innapropriate comment.

  • How can a musician 'fake' it? Unless you are dumb!

  • I just discovered this concerto last week. I'm fascinated, enthralled, and capitivated by the passion with which she plays. I actually shed tears when i learned that du Pre died from MS and had to stop playing in her 20s. It feels like such a loss, but maybe the purpose was for her to leave a legacy that would captivate generations to come. I am in love.

  • A master, who died WAY before her time. Rest in peace, Du Pre. Your music lives on.

  • Elgar Cello Concerto is the Jacqueline Du Pré concerto. Nobody is better for this concerto!

  • lol.she's so awesome! :D i like at 1:45 she looks around so intensely...and then at 1:50 she's so into and let's out a quick smile at 1:53 lol!

  • omg, u are right, 1:53 smile, i never saw it b4 and yet i have seen this video many times

  • i heard yo-yo ma's tempo before i heard this but i like this more.

  • i think i heard somewhere that this is Jac's best piece where no one else can play this song as good as her, not disrespecting anyone else of course...

  • No you're right. When Rostropovich heard her recording, he took it off his repitorie and didn't play it in concert for the rest of his life.

  • @Logan2192 Rostropovich might never have made a studio recording of the Elgar, but actually, very recently I saw and sampled a CD containing a recording of Elgar by Rostropovich, recorded from a live performance. It came along with the Haydn Cello Concerto. I also never knew previously that this recording existed. You can look for it in the internet if you are interested.

  • But she wasn't gay ! Spetslol was just trying to be a pain, and he succeeded obviously ;-)

  • Spets, if you wanna mess with people by disrespecting the artist they admire, go to a Yngwie Malmsteem video, post the same thing, and watch how badly Yngwie fans will thrash you. We're peace loving people, but they're not as peacable.

That said, I LOVE HER INTERPRETATION.

  • how powerfull...

  • Have you noticed that, after B-natural, she plays an "E" at the end of the cello solo, in fig. 45 (1:56-1:57 in this video)? This E is not in the score (I have checked it in two different editions), but is definitely terrific :)) It is so her!

  • yeah, it's definitely her own thing. i like it though!

  • Good call. I've played this piece a few times and used this recording as a guide to how I should play, and I've never caught that E. Very nice spot.

  • I've tried several times to perform just as she did but it's very hard... that Mi (E) isn't included at all on the original score.

Sure it is harder describe her virtuoso talent.

  • how is she gay...she was married to daniel barenboim

  • yeah, thanks for this, markvogue. on my 5th listen or so.

  • There are some weird people commenting here.

Thanks to markvogue for posting this!

  • she's gay? great. good for her.

she's not gay? great. good for her.

she's bi/undecided? great. maybe best for her. whatever.

how immature do you have to be to make such stupid comments? is youtube running a 'stupidest post' contest?

  • Her interpretation of This concerto is almost supernaturally amazing. There is so much she does with this concerto, and as someone who is working on the piece right now, I wish i could do it as well as she does it. She really is the ruler of this piece.

  • dude, you are such an asshole, if you watch a video like this the comment should not be "she's gay" more along the lines of "she's amazing." next time think before you type a stupid comment that doesn't belong here. have more respect, and don't do this as a joke

  • elagr was truly a master when it came to writing for the cello

  • you ignorant asshole, this woman is one of the most influential cellists of all time! do you know anything about her?!?! she is an inspiration of all cellists across the world and was sadly killed by multiple sclerosis. i really hope that someone like you reconsiders their life. have some respect. you are a homophobe and you are disrespectful, please nevercomment like that on any video ever again. i bet you are a racist too

  • are you retared!!!!!!!! This woman is the most amazing cellist ever!!! She plays this piece with such emotion. Where do you come off calling her gay??

  • You disrespectful little cunt! FOr starters, how dare you insult one of the most incredible and influential cellists of all time. finally, homophobia is gay. It's just another way of outing yourself and finding a way of getting your ass kicked if said to the wrong person. Don't ever write another word until you can back it up

  • i can tell that your some imature little fuck who has nothing better to do then critisize.

  • What makes you think she is gay? You obviously weren't good enough or mature enough to have met her even once in your pathetic little life. You're not funny and you would be better off commenting on her enormous talent.

  • hahahahaha

    love you

but i love her music too

but i dnt care if shes gay or not

    or if it offends people.

the music she produced is the only thing under critizism here.

but the gay bit is funny

    muwhahaha

    peace

    x

  • Haha, rough around the edges? This piece is about emotion! Something that du Pré put into her playing.

  • Watch at 4:45, she tightens her bow even more!

  • This performance moves me to tears EVERY time I watch it. Her drama is so beautiful and completely appropriate to the music. I am amazed; mesmerized, even.

p.s. 1st movement is my fav!

  • what year is this?

    brilliant playing, btw!!!!

  • I think this performance is from 1967, taken from the "Du Pré and the Elgar Concerto" documentary which is on YouTube somewhere =]

  • Go Barenboim!!!

  • I LOVE the themes at 3:13 and 5:00. Everything is just overwhelmingly brilliant =0

  • oh my goodness, she plays this absolutely flawlessly, I was watching this for tips, but I'm not sure what to take from it. She's perfect.

  • her cadenza in the beggining is just so amazing and chilling!

  • I was playing bits from this movement yesterday and was so enveloped by it that i was staring out the window pretty much directly into the sun. true story lol.

  • really thanks for posting this amzing 4 movement!!! no words can describe it, it's awsome!
