It was a slow day and the sun was beating on the soldiers by the road. You're picturing a slow, warm lyrical day... then "the shattering of shop windows, the bomb in the baby carriage was wired to the radio." Its amazing. And the messages and political currents in this song are truer now than ever.
@Jakob1951This is not a Los Lobos song. Simon invited them 2 play in the studio with him. They claimed that the music to "All Around the World or the Myth of Fingerprints" was theirs and that Simon never gave them joint writing credit. Simon is a genius but I can't help but consider Graceland an appropriation of others music and soul--He went to S. Africa, borrowed their music and got a bunch of gifted musicians to give of themselves and put their DNA on this record and then put his name on it!
@MrMeddled ...that is utter bullshit...if you are refering to Steve Birlin ...that is so false....Paul Simon stole shit off Los Lobos.....why would he want anything they got....he is one of the greatest singer songwritters of our time
although that pop star opinion you have is sooooooooo true, its changing. The flavor has gone stale. Its due to all our bitching and complaining. It becoming soooooo in to have a bad attitude toward pop stars that this attitude has become comecial. let's all bitch more.
@samsticka Not sure if "singing well" or not is so much the issue. Fact is, tons of people out there can sing--my neighbor, the mailman, the fat chick at the local karaoke bar. A pretty voice is nice, dont get me wrong, but how much musical nourishment can you get out of a C. Agulara/Maria Carey cd, etc? The problem lies in the market and popular tastes. The problem is content. The problem is the suits in control and the schlocky producers and songwriting teams pumping out the slick garbage.
@flowerdoodle I kind of like Mariah Carey, but Christina Aguilera, well, I'm kind of mixed on her. But I see your point. It feels like it's no longer what we want to hear, it's what they want us to hear and everyone likes it.
Aguilera is a brilliant singer but she has kind of ruined her reputation by going from exemplary pop princess to trashy attention seeking whore. Many female solo artists have undergone such an unfortunately transformation in recent years. They call it the Lady Gaga effect.
@samsticka Well done for making a smart and witty comment.... do you feel good now you got 12 thumbs up ? Important ? You Fucking Twat.... just listen.
@MrHargot You got that right. Music started going downhill after 1990. That's not to say the 90's didn't have good music, but I'd say that's when it started to go crummy.
Agreed dsdan83! Paul Simon is the shit! Such an amazing singer and especially song writer!

Commercialized pop stars (Ashlee Simpson, Britney Spears) can't write songs, don't read music and can't even sing. Most of them lip synch.

"Every generation throws a hero up the pop charts." Yep, they sure do.
Unfortunately, most of those "heroes" these days are rappers and commercialized pop stars who really can't sing. Blecchh!
