I think you were just too far away from it for too long. You might have made it if you were walking while activating the cheat, or got back on the bike before using the cheat.

Of course it's easy for me to say. I usually just don't go very fast on the bike, making sure I stay on. If you manage to avoid crashing at high speed and have a decent weapon to use on the bike, it's a pretty easy mission.
