It's just one of the alternative endings. What if it was Sawyer in the coffin instead of Locke kind of thing. However Sawyer's more of a follower than a leader and it made more sense to have Locke as Jeremy Bentham.

They filmed the ending with Sawyer and Desmond so that people wouldn't find out it was really Locke who is Jeremy Bentham before the episode aired.

Sawyer isnt a follower exactly. He's like the guy who'll follow you because he doesn't want to lead and have the problem of leadership on his shoulders. He's kinda like the back up leader.
