the way the bass (or the guitar, even) is tuned, eventually the intervals will show a pattern, which basically lays out the whole scale right in front of you. if he's tuned F# B E A D G C F A#, the scale moves one fret backwards every 2 octaves. guitars tune the C F strings to B E to make bar chords possible.

it's the reason i bought a 6-string bass and learned guitar, and both made me better on 4-string. just sayin'

The concept of a nine string bass is just a bit to ridiculous and irrelevant. I mean 6 or 7 is a good number, but 9 is a bit pointless. If you want to play higher registers, chords, and 16th and 32nd notes, play guitar, trust me it's a lot easier. I'm not putting putting this guy down or anything-I liked it-I just don't think the purpose of bass playing should be to solo, it's to be the bass.
