2:45 I have a player that, every time we do a SW game, this ALWAYS happens. It's the one reason that I quit GMing Star Wars, which is sad because I love Star Wars.
I too like the fact that this era isn't restricted as badly as the rebelion and new republic era was, thanks to all the books, movies and videogames. Every gap there is in timeline is propably filled up already, so you really can't do anything super heroic in those eras unless you are ready to break the history.
Though I'm a big fan of KOTOR and the original Star Wars trilogy it really boggled me that technology hardly advanced for the past few millenia. I understand that their level of tech was pretty high and the Force pretty much pawns. But there should still be some significant advancement. Did they ever explain why?
one problem: less than a year after coming out, WotC pulled this book off of the shelves (and off their own site, Amazon, B&N, etc.) so that even *used* copies now go for $85 online--wtf? too bad, i might've switched to saga edition if we could've played KOTOR era.
Only about 40 years before that time. Which isn't much given the background of some characters. And some of the Tales comics were CALLED Knights of the Old Republic, that's where they got the term for the game from.
Yes but only as a secondary name, the book has very little information on that time, and don't forget they also had some on Freedon Nadd, as well. If they considered the books and comics from that era to be part of it they would have added them, but they really didn't.
I don't really know why but I had such a hard time getting into the KotOR video game and I'm a huge Star Wars fan. I think it had to do with the gameplay more than story because the story was admittedly pretty good. My favorite material from that era of Star Wars is still the original "Tales of the Jedi" comics from Darkhorse.
I was in a group a little while ago, played in KOTOR setting. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the the enigmatic GM was constantly trying to force archaic items on us (like light saber energy cells that need to be worn like a backpack)
Good review, Kurt! You only forgot to mention: if you're a Star Wars fan, you owe it to yourself to play the KOTOR video game. Easily the best Star Wars game ever made. Then you can see what all the fuss is about.
As for the book, I found the lack of stats for the Ebon Hawk disturbing. Otherwise, it was a great book and definitely a great setting for Star Wars. Armies of Jedi and Sith fighting. Who wouldn't want to play in that era?
As for the problem of the trivia getting in the way, I always play Star Wars under the rule that the stuff *on-screen* from Episodes 1-6 is official - all else is irrelevant and the game universe may re-fill the blanks in any way.
How does Playing a Jedi differ in this game to playing in the other era's Cause I have to admit I would love to play a Jedi i just find the rules in the Star-ars games means that if you want to do any of the COOL stuff that Jedi's end up doing in the films you end up getting a truck load of Dark-side points, is this different seeing as its mor eof a Jedi Centric setting?

Is it like a player handbook or like a set of adventures specific to that period?

Lack of change in SW settings is one of its' weaknesses.
In any setting you can do what you want as long as you don't interfere w/the canon.
Gah, I can't take the words "prominent" and "predominant" used so much!

The KOTOR era was not launched with those video games, it existed YEARS before that as a pretty well-done comic book series from Dark Horse comics.
ironwolf56 2 years ago
KOTOR is about Revan, not Exar Kun, Exar Kun is in the Tales of the Jedi series which is not KOTOR but before that time.

The reasons you liked this book are the exact reasons I've been salivating over it since I picked up the base book.
I'm waiting for my copy in the mail and, thanks to your review, its a much more anxious wait. :)

I would say if you're doing things to get dark-side points then you're not doing things a Jedi would do. You're doing things a Sith would do.
