  • I first learned about this ceremony on 60 minutes...very interesting.

  • As an American I find this tradition very interesting.

  • lol i thought black rod was a person ha

  • I love those paintings at 1:04 but when I went to parilament we rushed through them all and I got shouted at becuase I walked 1 metre away from the tour to look at them.

  • I'm an American but I love watching Prime Minister's Questions and hearing the stuff Skinner comes up with. I wish American politics were as entertaining.

  • Hahahahaha.... Tory moles. What a kidder!

  • What a strange custom.

How long has the blackrod staff been hitting that same worn spot?

  • @ffairlane57

It commemorates the events of 4 January 1642 when King Charles I tried to enter the House of Commons and the MPs slammed the door on his face.

I think the tradition of slamming the door on the monarch's representative to commemorate 1642 dates back to the early 18th century, but the current door is only about 60 years old as the original was destroyed during the Second World War.

  • KLEPTOCRATIC RAPE MACHINE OF THE ESTABLISHMENT AND THE RULING CLASSES ROLLS ON.

  • What does Tory Moles mean? :/

  • You know where you can stick that rod, pal!

  • @adam4757 I WILL ALSO BRING A ARAB WITH ME ...YOU KNOW WHAT THEY DO. PFFT, A TANDOORI FART IN YOUR WHITE FACE. O HEAR THE COMMONWEALTH TAKING OVER BANKRUPT ENGLAND..KARMA SUCKS.

  • @neilzep go and fuck yourself

  • @pugilistofpower You first Wigger,a wigger is a white nigger. You whites are the biggest parasite/virus on this planet and like all virus need to be exterminated.

  • @neilzep: Racist.

  • @pugilistofpower you first Wigger,a wigger is a white nigger.

  • FUCK all this evil, masonic, occult bullshit. Motherfuckers, God owns you all.

  • @AssSprinkle

Why do weird Evangelical Americans always feel they have to get involved in things that don't involve them? Nobody asked for an arrogant American's opinion.

  • @AssSprinkle lolwut?

  • I wonder what the procedure is for replacing Dennis Skinner once he retires?

  • @rederic2004 I think the first joke after he retires should be something simple like "Nothing from Dennis this year?" If he retires through death (which could happen, as he is very old now) then they should just say "RIP, Dennis Skinner." That's my view on it anyway.

  • @rederic2004

    Hopefully there isn't one.

  • You English are so weird....

  • @murrangurk Yes we are- and proud of it! :)

  • No this isnt 1608, it is 2008......in England

    LOL

  • they cant keep the United States out there mouth like a Dick, never have i heard any mention of the UK in ANY U.S ceremony, if they did it would be considered treason and 30 years in jail

  • @thehulk3010 Whats that? I can hear 5 year old children dying across the Atlantic because billion dollar insurance companies have ripped his family off. The US has nothing to be celebrating in this day and age.

  • Bloody wankers lol

  • Loved the way Black Rod turned his back to Dennis Skinner and stood right in front of him :)

  • I am marvelled at how The British remember their political past every single year with as such meaningful ceremonies as these. I wish we, in Argentina, did the same with the lame politicians we have in Congress.

  • funny to see that old left winger Jack Straw on his Knees to the Queen.

  • Interesting. Never heard of this ritual before. So much I don't know.

  • who are the three boys in red coats standing to the right of the queen? does anybody know?

  • @mkeeble1989 I do not know there names etc, but if you are refeering to their function the just hold the Ermine train of the Queen's robes as she walks to parliment

  • Keep the monarch and keep the tradition.

  • Dennis Skinner has always had the best quotes when Black Rod was about. This year was no exception "No royal commissions this week".

  • what a pompous ceremony

  • Haha dennis skinner what a hero

  • Oh come on, listen most women her age would be sat looking forward to their pureed lunch and an afternoon of staring out of a window at sparrows. We send her all over the world, and she never puts a foot or a word wrong. She is worth very penny and we are lucky to have her, god knows what's going to happen when she has gone. Do them the maths and compare how much money she generates compared to how much money she costs. I have huge respect for her.

  • You have to admit, it is one badass, and highly symbolised, ceremony.

  • Abolish the monarchy - use the money to help those struggling.

  • What would you replace the monarchy with? Who would be the head of state?

The monarchy in the UK only costs about £0.69 per person per year. That's cheaper per capital than every President.

  • A President who we can directly elect - he/she would be much cheaper then he entire Royal family and their various MANSIONS.

How many schools, hospitals etc could we build with those milllions.

I dont want my tax to go to a bunch of inbred, overprivledged, unelected swines.

  • As I said, every Presidency in the world is more expensive per capita than the British monarchy. The Queen doesn't get a salary, the money she receives is to pay for her duties as head of state. Also, the monarchy brings in more money through tourism than it takes out through taxes. So abolishing the monarchy wouldn't pay for any new schools or hospitals.

You may not like the monarchy, but about 70% of the British people do.

  • The Queen only started paying tax in 1993 (i think).

She has a personal fortune of £150m (that the press know of)

France doesnt have a monarchy BUT gets twice as many tourists as we do.

Why should any tax go to funding their castles, mansions, country retreats and staff.

If they really care about their subjects, then they should give that money back and live on their investment portfolio which I hear yields them around £20-30m per annum.

  • A huge percentage of tourists come to the UK to see those castles and palaces, and to see events related to the monarchy. Most of the money the Royal family gets goes towards the upkeep of those places, all of which are part of our national heritage.

Much of the rest of the money pays for the Queen's duties of head of state.

The Queen is one of the most famous and respect women in the world, and the UK gets a great deal of prestige as a result of having her as head of state.

  • Open up ALL the buildings that the public pays for - hence more tourist revenue.

The Queen might be respected but the next monarch is Prince Charles and lets just say he'll most likely damage this country's reputation.

I respect the Queen, but it makes me sick to my stomach that we're having to live in a period of "austerity" while the Royal family get the best that money can buy.

  • As I said, the tax money goes to the upkeep of the Royal residences (which are part of our heritage) and to pay for the duties of the head of state (which would still be needed in a republic).

The monarchy gives the UK prestige, a link to our history and a unifying national figurehead, of which most nations are envious.

There is not guarantee Charles will become King, the Queen seems to be in great health. I think William (son of Diana) will secure the monarchy's future.

  • Given that men in general, and from what i can see, men in the Windsor family, die earlier than women, its highly possible that Charles will die before the queen, or at the least, only be on the throne for 10-15 years

  • Then his son william will acceed...you got a problem with that??

  • no particualarly, william is a bit dull but nice enough

  • @Medeasbiggestfan Most nations are not envious. They might find the pomp and ceremony charming and quaint, but ask an American if they'd rather be a monarchy than a republican and the answer would be emphatically 'no'.

  • @otleybey Are you for real? Are we to ask an American what he thinks and believe this will be of value in determining matters for Britain?

  • @Medeasbiggestfan She is famous and respected now, but was she when she first became Queen? How exactly is her fame important anyway? if we had a President they would be famous by virtue of the important position that they hold and their ability, not because of who their parents are.

  • @otleybey

She was very famous when she first became Queen, her Coronation was shown throughout the world.

How many people can name the President of Germany? Yet that is a very important office. A British President would not be as famous or as respected as the Queen.

Having a head of state as famous and as respected as Elizabeth II gives the UK great prestige in the world and that is very important to the UK's position in the world.

  • @otleybey Presidents are kind of boring anyway. Besides, even when you don't count the money they generate through tourism they more than pay for themselves through taxation of crown property, so effectively she pays you 60p a year for the honour of representing you around the world.

How many Presidents can you say that about?

  • @pardeepsinghk those estates often turn a profit from tourism income and such, actually. All of which goes straight into the treasury, last year or the year before the total was in the region of 20million. They're valuable as a tourist attraction, and the insitution is part of our history.

  • tragic for you then that support for the monarchy rarely drops below 70%.

Britain will NEVER be a republic.

  • Wait until Charles is King.

  • charles is actually quite popular incase you havnt noticed-hes using his position in EXACTLY the way he should-his charities.

they have brough untold thousands if not millions out of terrible poverty, into work and education. For that alone he has my admiration-having an affair? couldnt give a shit, it happens every day of the week

  • @bulked ... Not sure a self-described aspiring "tampon" should be King of Britain.

But if an Unfaithful Tampon were to be crowned King what sort of policies and changes would likely take place?

And how does that compare with any policies, practices, and changes if William were to become Britain's next King?

Also, what's the authority/basis for the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha family serving as monarchs of Britain, compared to other families?

And what are the Plantagenets doing nowadays?

  • Mr Tampon can be king as long as he keeps his opinions to himself once king-which is standard practice.

Anyway, he can call himself used Condom man for all i care, as he has more of a social conscience than most of our elected politicians as his chartiers clearly demonstrate-for that alone he will be well regarded

  • *charities

  • You seem to be assuming British monarchy dictate policy-trhey dont, thats why we allow them to remain-William, Charles it doesnt matter-the elected government dictates policy, the Monarch just does what hes told-thats why we fought a ci-vil war, to force this to be the situation.

As for the authority of the house of Saxe Coburg Gotha-none, because it doesnt exist-it became the house of Windsor 80 odd years ago

  • "ci-vil war" i mean civil war

  • @pardeepsinghk ... What differences/changes would you expect if Charles were to become King?

  • None, because he will be King of Britain therefore a figure head with no power

  • @pardeepsinghk actually your totally wrong-the US presidency, the French presidency-every major present, costs billions-the monarch costs peanuts

  • @pardeepsinghk its a shame you brits have no pride in your traditions. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!!

  • yes, because 69 pence a year will pull us out of poverty.

Presidents cost more than monarchy, so you will LOSE money that you want spent on the poor

  • Also Dennis says after Black Rod's retort, "We didn't rehearse it did we?!" Hilarious!

  • LOL a great man - the only version I ever wanted to watch the opening of Parliament.

  • Dennis SKinner = Genius! He's the only one who cuts through the pomposity of the State Opening, frankly it looked more ridiculous this year than ever....

  • @Nosmos, If it is so ridiculous I am surprised you watch it so often!

  • @Nosmos

    Don't watch it then.

  • @Nosmos Skinner's a cunt...I'll be glad when he's dead.

  • Ohyewildthong...And you my friend are a fucking twat. Skinner's the only honest MP in the building.

  • parliament before State

  • I like this video because it shows the job of the Black Rod quite well.

  • The queen has hardly any power anymore

  • whers the door slam bit????/ wth

  • 1:25

  • honourable house?

  • reserve power is all theoretical, it would result in civil war!!! So no, the crown doesnt have any real power at all.

  • well put

  • This really symbolizes the power of the crown (in Canada, as well). If the Queen wanted to dissolve Parliament or appoint a new Prime Minister, she could. It is the ultimate check on potential abuses by elected governments, such as declaring a dictatorship.

  • wrong-this power has been devolved to the PM. She is mearly a representative of the soverign power of the state, the government that controls this state withtin the executive under the PM has the power

  • You might want to check the article "Reserve power" on Wikipedia - the crown, in fact, wields considerable power.

  • The door sounds crunchy

  • Fantastic i love Britain. Watching Cameron and Brown is like watching two school children who have been forced to get on by a teacher.

  • Ummm, what the hell are Torey Moles..?

  • it may be medieval - but it shows the relationship between the Queen, the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

Black Rod is sent to the Hose of Commons to summon them before the Monarch - the House of Commans slams the door in his face to show the Commons does not heed the whim of the Monarch - he must knock to gain entry and be inivted it. It comes from when King Charles 1st tried to arrest 5 members of Parliment and the door was slammed in his face.

    Its all symbolic ;O

  • @BritCam89 I think it would be a better symbol if they all walked up and flipped off the queen and then liquidated her billions.

  • this is so medieval!!

  • I thought this was going to be funny, a man getting smacked in the face by a door. =[

  • This Brutualtruth man who can't even spell needs a serious mental health assessment. He is so full of hatred.

  • Comment removed

  • I have great respect for Skinner. I suspect a lot of MPs share his feelings, but haven't the guts to stand up and speak their mind.

  • What did Dennis Skinner say during the 1998 Opening of Parliament? If anyone knows I would be very pleased!

  • Ha Ha! You are so funny. Just a walking ball of rage. I bet you walk down the street screaming at people who brush into you by accident.

By the way, I'm not a cockney.

  • Only at jealous socialists like you! Off to Cuba, Comrade Cockney!

  • Have just returned from Cuba. One of the most beaufiful places I have ever been too. The Carribean, the sand, the sea, the music. Wonderful

  • Really? Cuba is nice and such a paradise that the people can't bear being there which is so great that they pack themselves in boats and risk death by drowning to get to Miami! Shame on you sort.propping up that dispicable communist regime,

  • I think you are talking about many years ago my dear. I have never met such happy people. Their health care system is amazing and the only reason many of them are poor is because of the sugar embargo enforced by the USA you fool.

  • ou must have been on a Left Wing Guitt Trip, my dear! You probably avoided the absolute destitution of the people as you were probably on a Ethically Cleansed Socialist Tour. Typical socialist you are: ignoring basic facts to cover your perverse left wing idealogy! Sad really! :(

Are you a black African? Case closed!

  • For goodness sake take a chill pill. Just because people want a republic doesnt mean that they are commie reds. By the way what has the colour of my skin got to do with it?

    Keep on taking your medication.

  • Keep taking your medication mate. What medicine would you take? Socialist syrup? One mouthful fits all. When you get older you will realise the error of your pathetic class-war prejudicial socialist politics-of-envy ways. I pray for you! ;)

  • White, blonde hair blue eyes actually. You tosser.

  • Brutual Truth is so funny I can't help winding him up. He is full of anger. He thinks because we believe in republicanism then we are red commie's and God knows what else in his deranged mind. He thinks because I went to Cuba on holiday that I was on an Ethnically Socialist tour. OMG he so makes me laugh, oh and then he assumes Im a black African male. BNP me thinks. He is funny though, keep winding him up and he will come out with more reactionary crap. .

  • Did you notice how Cameron bowed when entetrng the Lordss and that fat drunk pyscho Jock of a Brown didn't bow- apart from his deformed side jaw!

  • Yes!

  • Are you saying it is a good thing for a party leader to be subservient to the Lords? I'd vote for anyone who stuck two fingers up as they walked in.

  • Well London cockney boy, I hope you will put two fingers up to the jock that destroyed pensions; two fingers to the jock that has turned the UK in to a debt-ridden basketcase; two fingers to the jock that has made a mess of immigration; two fingers to the jock that imposed 100 taxes over 11 years. Stupid foolish Republican cockney ignorant uneductaed twat!

  • The monarchy makes a mockery of our democracy. The House of Lords is a disgrace. Bugger off back to Ascot you Tory.

  • And you can fuck off to Cuba or knowing your mentality - North Korea! Go on, off yer ,go we in the UK don't want socialist backward jealous zealots like you! Off you go, comrade brother! By the way ,Black Rod is showing us the the symbol of Parliament;s authority over the monarchy! You are so red and a communist zealot that you don't realise it!

  • So you think that giving the government royal prerogative powers that are not subject to judicial review or parliamentary scrutiny is a good thing? You think that the royal family are a good deal for the tax payer? I suppose you also think that its great that the House of Lords is unelected.

You're the zealot mate. How on Earth is republicanism and democracy backwards compared to a primitive system that most other countries have managed to get rid of?

  • You let the cat out of the back there, mate! You are expouting Republicanism. I am not keen on the Royal Family but the vast majority of the UK population are and that is the way it should be. You are are another poisoned Socialist. You think your twisted socialist policies of 'one size fits all is ok' is ok. Well,if you don't like the UK, then fuck off to Cuba, North Korea, Venezuala or to match your mentatlity Zimbabwe! Stupid foolish boy!

  • You're an intellectual lightweight. Why do you keep talking about North Korea? Idiot. Actually it is not the 'vast' majority, there is a sizable minority who are republicans, and when pressed most people don't hold strong opinion on the matter. When pressed to pick a side on an issue that you don't really understand/don't care much about, you will almost always go with the status quo. Explain to me what socialism has to do with it please - although you probably don't know what it is anyway.

  • I am called a lightweight by a 19 year old socialist in nappies! LOL. What the fuck is a sizeable minority? A miniority is a minority and a majority is a majority. Your socialist clapped-out Labour party were for 18 years in opposition and guess what! They had to drop the shite of socialist policies that you believe in to get elected. The majoriity rejected socialism! LEAVE THE COUNTRY if you don't like it! Off you go Labour 'yoof'!

  • Have to agree with you. Our BRUTUAL TRUTH friend sounds a bit deranged. Hes getting himself into a right old state isnt he. He thinks people are still leaving Cuba in boats.

  • they are

  • I know, he is a complete raving mad idiot but its good winding him up. You can imagine him walking around rageing at anyone who is not wearing a union jack and bowing to the queen. Otleyboy lets make it a mission to wind up Brutually honest. I mean lets face it he doesnt evan know how to spell!!!! He is so funny.

  • Wrong I am winding you up all the time and you have taken the bait, yer fat blond overweight pie-muncher. Take a look at your own speling - what a retard! Ha Ha! Please keep off the chocolates and crisps and the chronic masturbation. Ha ha, fat boy xxxxxxx

  • Why does he think that because your a republican that you are a communist zealot and a red? Hes so funny old Brutual Truth.

  • Go to Cuba, its paradise and the only reason its in poverty is because of the US embargo. Lets hope Obama changes that but the people and the country are beaufiful. lol

  • I think I know what Dennis Skinner should go with this year!!!! "Has she put the palace on expenses?!"

  • Can't wait to see what Dennis says this year!!!!

  • To me the Queen's Imperial State Crown seems too small. Instead of sitting around her brow, it floats on top of her head. It's a wonder it does not fall off.

  • I cant see the problem with the current system. The monarchy is an integral part of our identity. Like it or not, its the genesis from which our governement evolved. There is no power wielded by the monarchy anymore, but its still a symbol of our great nation. If we were to scrap it on the basis of progess or equality we would be doing grave damage to the fabric with which our society is woven.

  • Isn't it inpirational to see our elected members of parliment be summoned to a house of fat, old, senile, over-payed, spinless, putrid, unelected slobs.

  • Most of the Lords were MP's at one time. Though i feel the upper house should be elected so the Goverment of the Day can't stack it full of thier own supporters.

  • I want to abolish the monarchy...

    who's with me?

  • Not Tory Boy Brighty....He is probably as I speak polishing his collection of Majesty magazine

  • Not me, not about 70% of the British people either.

  • how do you know that?

    nice imaginary statistic there!

  • It's not an imaginary statistic. Do a Google search for BBC "Poll respondents back UK monarchy". The poll from late 2007 shows that 78% of people want to keep the monarchy and only 16% wanted a republic.

The Queen's approval rating has hovered around 75% for the last 50 years.

  • I understand polls are important, but you can't take the findings of a poll as absolute!

Maybe I'm young and associate with younger people (most of whom in my experience are anti-monarchy)

Once the older generations die out, and times get tougher for the lower and middle classes, that 'approval rating' will plummet.

    I certainly hope it does.

  • Younger people have always been less enthusiastic about the royal family, but as they get older they tend to become reassured by the consistency and tradition of the monarchy.

This is certainly the case with my family, several members of which campaigned for a republic during their teenaged years in the 70s, but now support the Queen.

  • But those family members have presumably grown-up in a cushy 1980's and 1990's economic environment!

It will be harder for my generation I think, and people will dislike the position and wealth of the monarchy.

I just hope all country's will eventually see the pointlessness and backwardness of monarchy.

  • When Gordon Brown went to Washington no one in the US cared about him. Obama cancelled a press conference and most of the people who came to see him address congress werent Senators or Congressmen, but congressional aides who had gone to fill up empty seats.

However, Obama has insisted on meeting the Queen when he comes next month, and when the Queen went to the US in 2007, thousands of people lined the streets to see her. I doubt this would be the case with a British President.

  • I totally agree with your comments about the US attitude to Browns visit.

Their 'gift' was a disgrace also (Hollywood DVD's) considering Brown gave Obama a pen + a case made from the wood of the last slave ship to dock in Britain!

But... Obama's opinion... or anyone's opinion of the monarchy's positives does not make their position any more reasonable, or logical, or productive or fair.

There are (to me) no positives from still having a hereditary monarchy... it just disgusts me. Why not you?

  • The Queen has no power but she does have prestige, which helps the UK maintain prestige in the world. Having a non-political head of state can be very useful. For example, if a tyrannical Prime Minister even managed to get to power, the monarch would be the only one who could remove such a PM and call an election. This is what happened in Thailand after the 1981 coup, when the King stepped in to restore democracy. In a sense, the UK's unelected head of state is democracy's last line of defence.

  • I concur with that completely. The monarch is like our last chance if something awful happens. And I like that traditions, such as this one, are upheld. They remind us of who we are, and what we came from. It lets us know of the brave people of Britain past, and how peace was restored.

I conclusion, Britain is great =D

  • its all vanity! since when did tradition come before reason and equality?

  • You are so right.

  • It disgusts me watching this ridiculous outdated ritual. When will they ever come into this century and get rid of the monarchy.

  • it is in the govt's intrest to maintain the mornarchy. Presidents are far more expensive, plus presdential govt are in practice less democratic than parliamentery ones.

  • Depends - if the president merely replaced the Queen as Head of State, that wouldn't mean an end to a parliamentary system. Just means an elected figure would do the ceremonial stuff. I think Ireland might be run that way. The stuff in this video is really a tradition of role-play, which has its place. Perhaps this could be done as part of theatre for the public - like Shakespeare. Every country has some sort of pageantry or quirks of history to play with - like Morris Dancing!

  • At times I think that, but watching American traditions shows that a measure of pageantry is, or is used as, a focal point. Congress rising for the President is something we probably wouldn't like in a British context, partly because it might seem like the monarch running Parliament, and partly because we view the PM as supposedly working for us, and not the other way around! Maybe American traditions might seem archaic in 1000yrs. Who knows? The past is always tricky for the present.

  • You are right. Who did they poll? Statistics can be so wrong. They know what they are doing when they want the answer that they want.

  • Sorry mate, I'm not with you nor are most people. The ceremony in this video should tell you just how powerful the monarchy really is, i.e. not at all.

  • Well if you're ok with hereditary inheritance of power, position and influence, thats fine.

I think you should earn it.

  • Brilliant Dennis Skinner highlighting what a joke this whole farce is. I think the best one was in the late 1970s, when the Commons refused Black Rod entry, and sitting was suspended! Shame such rebellion has disappeared as a spineless, supine bunch of careerist politicians are taking over

  • Lol. My favourite one was "Did she bring Camilla with her?"...

  • He also said as blackrod entered at height if a famous lager commercial, "I bet he drinks carling black label" lol

  • Im with you as is most of the country.

  • I hate Skinner! No respect for either tradition or suitable attire whilst in the house.... Typical uneducated and scummy labourite... Who would be on the dole if it wasnt for trade unions..

  • Skinner is an absolute star and one of the only honest politicians ever. I have a Phd and I respect that man so much. He gave all his salary to the miners strike and has always been there for his constituents. Please do your research before you make comments like this.

  • Oh you have a Phd from the mickey mouse college of shit degrees!! How special.... you must be right!!! tool... I was giving an opinion.... i happy to hear yours but im afraid you havent convinced me... the mans an outdated fool whos as useless as the shite party he represents!

  • Absolutely and spot-on Brighty, If he(Skinner) so concerned about his 'people' why the fuck did he walk out on his wife and get a younger woman?t The dirty old fucker! Skinner has the mentality of Hoolley Hoop, here, another socialist in denial! Can't Zanu Labourt get rid of this useless old dinosaur. He is bitter and twisted and stuck in a stupid idealogy!

  • All this ceremony with the door slamming and knocking and stuff just seems a bit silly now.

  • It's symbolism.

  • I think its about time Black Rod got his revenge on Skinner for all those times hes interupted his duties.

  • I love watching these traditions, its so nice to see that they have preserved such an old tradition!

  • I think it's great that we in Britain have ancient ceremonies such as these. They are a very important part of our national identity, and I think it's very sad that some people feel that we no longer need a royal family.

    God save the queen.
