NASCAR History: this was the First Daytona 500 to be broadcast live on network TV. @negtype13 is right--this race, the fantastic finish (fight included) put NASCAR on the must-see sports events.
There were actually two races in the race... the race between cale and donnie.. and the actual daytona 500.
the race between cale and donnie was a draw. they were both equal that day. that day these two were on a completely different level than the rest of the field.
the actual daytona 500 was won by petty. You see there was some pretty good racing going on that day, but the battle between cale and donnie was so compelling that we didn't see the rest of the action going on out there.
There was a snowstorm on the East Coast that weekend and a big part of the US and Canada was homebound, and in an era where it was still just the Big Three networks this was the only thing on. Imagine the shock of many when they saw this ending -- they thought, is this was NASCAR is about every week? This was definitely the day stock car racing hit the big time. I was only six or seven at the time and it was all anyone could talk about at school the next day.
@BlastFurnaceCanada You are quite right. I was in high school in Daytona at the time, and it's all anyone, teachers and students, wanted to talk about the next day!
@BlastFurnaceCanada But, the race would have scored big TV ratings anyway, storm or no storm, given that auto racing had grown enormously in popularity during the 1960's and 1970's.
Amazingly, he race telecast was blacked-out everywhere east of the Mississippi and south of the Mason-Dixon Line. No CBS (the network that carried the race) affiliates in Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Missippi, or Florida could carry the race.
undoubtedly the most remembered and weirdest aqnd surprise finish in daytona 500 history and you can bet dollars to doughnuts that donnie allison was in no way shape or form gonna let cale yarbrough by him at any cost.they both were so mad at each other that they started at each other and fought right down on the grass!crazy!and wouldnt ya know it,petty wins yet another daytona 500,why are we not surprised.unreal.

Know what's funny? This was Dale Earnhardt's rookie season.

It was Cale's fault he got into the grass which made him lose control and hit Allison.

@BrickGrease It coulda been worse. At least he didn't pull a "Kyle Busch". I reckon that was accidental.
