The AIM is there for new starts who haven't been able to get venture capital funding. It is not something normal people invest in. If you are going to invest in AIM it is like investing in junk bonds - sometimes you make money and sometimes you lose. Incidentally the way the same thing is done in the US is by issuing 'penny bonds'. But some high end investors like the challenge and go for that stuff if they like the underlying idea. You generally need to be involved as well.
