  • I love her rendition, just wish she could have hit on top of those high notes a little better rather than reach so hard for them. From the sound of her voice, she could definitely have gotten them with more practice ahead of time... I understand that for the movie, they were trying to deviate from the big broadway sound, but... eh. From experience, it is a difficult song to sing though, I'll give her that.

  • I'm male and can force my voice to somewhat-almost close to her range of vibrato while singing this song, but it feels like it'll make my heart explode out of my chest!

  • I wish with aaaaaalll my heart they had the instrumental for this. I need to practice it!

  • what is the song called whne Sweeney is singing about joanna?

  • @famerjz johanna reprise :)

  • @elfaba128 Totally agree, but in this movie she was 21 years old

  • You know if she was older I wouldn't like it but sense she is supposed to be like 14 the voice suits her well

  • is there a chance for someone who was not born with a great voice to become a singer? (i don't mean famous, just good at singing) and does someone know how the vibrato works? i can do it but not all the time

  • @AnonymeAnimal Some can, some can't. The best advice I can give you is to find a vocal coach in your area and see if they would be able to help you. A person who is good at coaching voices would know if you have potential or not after a few notes.

  • @AnonymeAnimal The vibrato is either natural or you still need to mature depending on your voice. I'm a teen so I'm just now developing my vibrato but never force it. If you have straight tone then consider a vocal coach if you want a vibrato

  • this song is so sweet love her voice so sweet innocent and gentle <3

  • 2 people have never taken wiiiinnnnggggggg.

  • I like the way she sings is compared to many of the stage versions, becasue it's like she's a little songbird herself, trapped in a gilded cage. I think it's better being soft and gentle and teeeeeny!! :P

And omg, her vibrato! So controlled! *jealous*

  • @VintageBroadwayStar I don't normally like vibrato... To me, it often distracts from the song rather than adding to it. However, I agree that it fits well with the feeling of this song.

  • I love her voice! And she was in inbetweeners! :D

  • @PrincessHeart1997 really what what eppisode?

  • Id be so happy with this song if she didnt do the opera thing with her voice

  • @ILuvGuyzWhoCanSing1

Um....it's vibrato. It's natural. She's not faking it or anything.

  • @ilive2sing22 I know it's natural and she can't really control it, i just like it better without vibrato

just nevermind, didnt mean to offend

  • @ILuvGuyzWhoCanSing1 I wasn't offended at all....sorry if I gave you that impression.

  • @ILuvGuyzWhoCanSing1 Vibrato can be controlled. If she sang this song without vibrato, it being a solo and a soprano solo at that, it would be extremely boring. Not to mention..she's sustaining high notes. Without vibrato she'd sound almost flat. If you heard this same song without vibrato, you'd prefer it with it. Ensembles don't use vibratos. Soloists do.

  • I don't like her interpretation or her voice. You don't have to agree with me. I just don't "believe" her. I'm not trying to be ass- Joanna is a very hard role to tackle. Sweeney Todd is EXTREMELY TOUGH acting and singing.

  • This is one of my favorite songs in the movie, it is so beautiful and she has the perfect voice for it. I would kill to have her voice!

  • @BryceMichaela

    Join The Club! ;P

  • its actually called 'green finch and linnet bird' im not trying to be patronising, just trying to help.

  • I definatly like this one much more than any of the other versions. The others are so wild and crazy and you don't get to appreciate the song, this one you can because she sings it so clearly and smoothly :)

  • I think she has a nice pure voice for this. Like on broadway i feel they try to make it so good it falls short, but she rocked it.

  • I love this song because it imitates the song of birds, caged birds, as Johanna sings about, which is appropriate for her to sing since she herself is a caged bird that sings, staring at the rain, maddened by the stars...

  • What I like is that the voice is quite clear to understand. (I had a bit of trouble with Mrs Lovett) But I do wish the vibrato was toned down a bit... love the melody though. Stays with me...

  • @KylieZDM The meaning of not too much vibrato is that the voice is more innocent and angelic sounding. That's what my voice teacher told me atleast :D

  • This is my fav song in the movie and play.

  • Gothicblackrose I don't think she's in the phantom of the opera. (Trust me I would've known it). If she is though, let me know which character she plays because I didn't see her?

Anyways I love this movie and this is one of my favorite scenes from it.

  • she's also in the phantom of the opera

  • i don't think she played meg, if that's who ur thinking of. meg is played by jennifer something. they do sort of sound/look alike tho, right? (if you are thinking of meg)

  • Nope, she's a newcomer to film. She was spotted in a production of West Side Story in Londenderry.

  • Hmm? I don't think she is... that is if you're talking about the one with Rossum and Butler.

  • she herself sounds like a bird...reminds me of Snow White..

  • The most impressive voice in the movie, in my opinion.

  • thsi song is amazing!

  • I wish my voice was that high! It sounds beautiful!

  • 1:03 - 1:17 i absolutely adore that part

  • XD do you not like her voice?

  • of course i like her voice but that part is just amazing XD

  • i wish i sounded good that high in my register :(

  • For some reason I love this song.

    >>

  • she sings to high for me.

  • I like her.

    IDC what anyone says,

    She Johanna.

    :pppp

  • Her voice is beautiful, and this song is beautiful...she has a very good voice, very high! just like a bird.

  • i really wish she would drop her jaw and send the tone forward...rather than letting it fall back in her throat.. it would fix a lot...i hear it every now and then...but its not consistent. Theres a beautiful voice in there...i know it.

    le sigh

    zan

  • Maybe it was deliberately high to imitate a green finch, known for its idiosyncratically beautifully high pitch?

  • Her voice is kind of kiddish.

    But i love this song!

  • She supposed to be a virginal 15 year old.

  • *shudder* creepy as hell that turpin fancies her. as sexy as alan rickman may be, i'd be scared shitless having a 60-something year old prey on my age group.

  • oops - "allowed".

  • I love this song, it's so pretty. But I'm not aloud to see the rest of the movie, and to tell the truth, I don't want to. But I do love this song!

  • Ugh I'm sorry to hear that! Go watch whatever you want behind their backs! Fuck em

  • Her voice is so beautiful!

    <3

  • This girl has a pretty voice but I think they lowered a few notes or she's completely lyrical. Pretty voice, though.

  • you will prolly have to listen to it here...not the best section of the song...but her name is Laura Molina. She is the best Johanna ever!...lol

  • Ca me fait penser à Blanche Neige et les sept nains

Sounds like Snow Withe, doesn't it?

  • J'adore sa voix, on dirait presque le chant d'un oiseau ^^ Cette chanson lui convient parfaitement je crois :P

    En tout cas quel talent!

  • i love her vibroto. sounds weird but it sounds like she flipped a switch in her vocal chords that just vibrates. i love the sound. its like an echo.

  • Favorited!

  • I think her voice is more appropriate for the song because her voice is so gentle. The broadway operatic version is too strong for a character who is supposed to be meak and not so strong willed.

  • I think the reason why the broadway version is strong is because the singers have to sing to the people at the last row. With a movie, she has the advantage to sing more gently and softly without having to worry about the audience not hearing her.

  • all the same, singing for recording and live is diffrent...

  • It shouldn't be. Thats what makes broadway peopls so amazing. They sound the same on record and live. No one does that anymore...

  • not necessarily idena menzel sounds awful live sometimes....shall i remind you of the tonys a few years ago....

cds usually do sound better than live..it really depends on the song..

    zan

  • everyone messes up...but CDs are basically recorded live...except if they mess up they can redo it...but most, if not all, broadway performers can reproduce what they record...

  • THANK YOU! lol...

I do however love how everyone acts like they know all about musical theatre, yet they have prolly only seen Sweeney Todd, Rent, Hairspray, and Wizard of Oz movies....lol

  • Well, I wouldn't really say she's a squeaky mouse, my friend told me she's a "perfect soprano". My music teacher sings like her, but I wouldn't really know your opinion and my opinion might be totally different ^^;;;

  • @JanShanbelain Completely agree. It shows her vulnerability. ^_^ I like this version very much.

  • I actually like the more operatic and steady, heavier voices of those who sang this on broadway.

she has a great voice, but i like the fullness of the others

  • She sounds like Snow White

  • wow. I absolutely Love her voice. Great movie.

  • She sang this absolutely beautifully, she does have talent.

Now to those of you who say "it's too high", "less vibrato", are not getting the point of music as a whole. Every piece of music is open for intrepretation and even if you don't like the song nor the girl, you still have to give her credit for the voice she has.

  • I love this song, apparently I nail it quite well for a 13yr old who's never had singing lessons or anything. How do you work out if your like soprano/alto etc, what's the range for each? And what are the groups called? Random. Sweeney Todd- ftw <3

  • I can actually sing this song fairly well. I'm a soprano 1.

  • I can sing it also but I'm actually an alto.

  • HURRAY FOR ALTO!

  • Yeah she does tie slightly too much, but the personification of the bird in her voice is perfect. It's a lovely version of this song, the vibrato is exceptionally well controlled and gives this song a lovely feel.

  • Better than anything I've heard of this song heard on Broadway.

  • she sounds exactly like a bird singing, it's lovely, and this actually is my favorite song from this musical :3

  • this song has been stuck in my head since like last week!

  • lol me too.

  • Well I like it high. It makes it different and interesting, and suits the role VERY well.

  • Some people may not like this song but I love it!It's purrty.

  • i just think the SONG is beautiful. the music just sounds so pretty. and she does sound sort of bad when she's singing so high. i think she would be better in the lower range. that's how it is with me!!!!!!!

  • You're either deaf or have no idea what a good voice sounds like.

  • that's how it's supposed to sound like :O

look up other people singing this, they sing it exactly the same way

  • you just don't know what to listen for...and its ok. You're normal :)

  • is that an insult or a compliment? haha :D be honest, i really don't care

  • Kind of both I guess...kind of a passive insult or something lol. Sorry, I'm an a-hole on here when critiquing people.

  • her voice is perfect for this role, it kind of ruins it for me when an older women sings this cause its ment for a younger women

  • her voice is very dainty and so is her appearance. its not exactly how Johanna is supposed to be portrayed. She should be more frivolous and silly, but I must admit she does have a better voice than the original movie Johanna. She has a good vibrata and vocal range, but I wish she'd put more umph into it. She captured the tone of the song magnificently.

  • Love it! Added to favorites!

  • aww how beautiful

  • *dreaming*

  • I liked it!

  • i've this one on my channel with the original movie clip.

  • i seriously love her!

her voice and her beauty is just perfect for that role

  • ugh the original sarah rice is soooo much better...this girl is very unsuported and breathy

  • uhm her names is Johanna. Not Sarah.

  • I could understand believing Sarah Rice is better, but her voice is actually quite decent. She just happens to have an airy voice. That is most certainly not a bad thing. She could work on her breathing though.

  • I agree.

  • such an amazing vocal range

  • She has a lovely voice and she is sooo pretty!

  • it's supposed to be that high

  • i love this song she has such a pure voice!

  • i always thought that he just saw that she was really pretty and he never herd her sing?

  • how did that lad hear her sing, she had her window closed

  • He probably only heard her high notes. _

  • rofl yep yep

  • he heard the HIGH notes lol.

  • shes gotta a lovely voice but whats her name in real life?

  • Her name is Jayne Wisener.

  • she has got such a strong voice

gr8 song all sweeney todd songs r gr8

  • I luv her voice, her dress, and this song!!!

She was a good girl for this role

  • this song rox so friggin hard!!!!

    it's very appropriate..

  • the broadway version of this play was amazazazazing.

BUT for this particular song, i think the girl in the broadway's voice had wayyy to much powerhouse vibrato. I think this Johanna was cast perfectly.

  • A lot of people criicize her voice, but I think that it fits her perfectly. It sounds delicate and frail which matches Joanna's character.

  • Thsi is very peaceful.

    :]

  • I think her voice fits her character perfectly, because isn't she supposed to have the "singing bird" quality? It is what the song is about. also she plays Johanna, who is supposed to be meek and really it would not fit to have her sing richly in this case. Not the best vocal performance I've ever seen, but remember this is the movie, not a recital.

  • Well, she certainly isn't horrible, but she certainly isn't great. She has a very small, "pinched-sounding" voice. Nothing full or rich about it. I know this girl is just a kid (What is she, 17?), but I have heard many girls younger than she is sound much better. Of course, they couldn't really pick the best singers for this movie, because they couldn't let the supporting cast be better singers than Johnny and Helena. Which would not be hard to do.

  • She's not supposed to be pure and rich, at all. I prefer the stage show, but for Johanna, this was much better.

  • She's twenty. <3

  • 'ow can ya tell these days?

  • she looks like a pixe but her voice is amazing

  • this girl that sings this is from Coleraine, Northern Ireland..shes friends with my best friends cousin lol.

i think its really amazing that someone from where i come from can achieve so much =)

good luck to her in the rest of her career =)

  • yah.. same... I wish she didn vibrato so much. it soundds bad.

  • i wish she wouldn't vibrato so much... but other than that, her voice is brilliant for her age!! for some reason, i just LOVE listening to this song!

  • so beautiful! This is one of my favorite songs from the musical. Too bad this is the only song she sings in the movie. Her voice is so good for her age!

  • I LOVE THIS MOVIE!And I really like this song and Johanna. She is so beautiful, also she is a wonderful singer, but Mrs.Lovett, is my very favorite. Johanna is my second one! :)

  • I luv The mv Sweeney Todd n dis song!Omg!!!It is so good and the charicter is perferct 4 dis pt!!!

    -Haley-

  • This song is awesome. I ran down the hallway singing it at the top of my lungs when no one was listening.

    : D

  • oh my god something about this song just does something to me... dont know why. it may have to do with her voice or something but i realllly wish i could sing this for my vocal exams. not allowed to do musical theatre though (sniff..) but i like how this sounds when i sing it. thanks for uploading!!!

  • her voice is amazing for the style she sings. Its very clear and prominent which is excellent for a sort of operatic voice. Personally its not my style but she does have soo much talent and deserves to be rewarded for this performance.

  • I saw this stage Johanna at my college--and her voice was so clear that I thought it was one of a kind. Then I saw the girl in the movie, and they're about the same. Which is good, because I loved the girl at my college.

  • wooooooooooooooooooow

  • I think this is good because i mean she isn't the most powerful singer but joanna is jsut suposed to be a 15 year old girl~ so you know a soft voice like hers really fits, I think~

  • I'll settle this.

They DID sing on set. But it wasnt used for the movie. They used RECORDINGS for the movie. But to get the feel on the scene, they had to sing on set instead of lip sync to the music.

  • her voice is very good...a tad nasiliy for my taste but hey its still really gud<3

  • Her voice is ok, rather listen to Anthony.

  • some parts of the movie they r really singing on set. other times they lip-sync

  • You're an idiot. They recorded everything before they filmed the movie and while they filmed the movie they would sing but what they recorded in the studio would go over what they sang while they filmed.

  • How would u no that? maybe we are ALL wrong or maybe we are ALL right

  • Oh my god! Do you really think they sing while they're filming? If you don't belive me search for "Johnny Depp singing in Sweeney Todd" or something and you'll se that they record it just like they record other kinds of songs.

  • um. the dvd has a behind the scenes and they actually say that they sang on set. so there. settled?

  • sure, they sing some, but moestly it's in a studio.

  • Actually if you watch the special features they had to lip sing on set, but sing in the studio. Sometimes they sang behind the record because it would make it look like they are actually singing which it kinda is. ;D

  • the actors did sing on set... they followed along with the recordings from the studio they did before filming

  • She's great, I can't wait to see this movie!!!

  • Love her song =)

  • she has a beautful voice.

    but her vibrato is dreadful.
