Use a metronome at the slowest setting then play one note per beat and work up from there. Yes it will be extremely boring but it's the only way. Most of the best players in the world aren't known for playing very fast, it's an attribute they can use when called for. I do like your attitude but you can't half learn bluegrass banjo. I know you can do it.

Eh, well, I play guitar for 8 years now. When I started playing banjo I had to get used to the finger picks, but after a while you'll get the hang of it. I know this isn't answering your question but eh, I think it's a yes. But that depends with everyone ;) You'll have to find out yourself!
Really nice! It's unimaginable you got that far in just a year and you must have good hearing as well to be able to pick it out. I hope i'll be that good after a year (i got my banjo only 3 weeks ago :D)
