Buddy of mine has this little piece of heaven. After about 20 minutes of playing with it, I was able to get some really strange sounds out of it. Definitely going up to high priority on my 'list of toys to buy'. Great Demo!
Nice clip and i thought id weigh in on it..i dont own a Rogue, but i do own a micromoog,a minimoog oldschool,a liberation, opus 3,polymoog (4 of the beasts, actually) a ARP odessy a Korg MS-20 etc etc and the questions asked if a prodigy or a mini can do what this does...in all fairness, its my opinion that each synth has a unique sound to themselves...so while a mini can "do" what this rogue was doing...its doing it slightly different. Differnt sound somewhat..just my opinion! this sounds great!
i own an arp odyssey and :" learned " subtractive synthesis on it .. BUt the first time i used a rouge i was into it 30 seconds before it just sounded " moogy" what that filter does is incredible sounding to me .
@djomercohen Never ask anyone that owns a vintage synth whether a remake is as good, the answer will always be NO, regardless of how close the remake is because they will never accept that their baby has lost value. As a non owner, I can tell you that the Moog Phatty is pretty close to this and can probably do 95% of what this can and that's why I am about to buy one.
@djomercohen I do, and it's a much bigger beast than the Rogue. Remember the Rogue has 2 OSC's, the Voyager has 3... not to mention a ton more modulation capabilities. If in doubt get a Voyager... as it can do what a Rogue can do and more, but a Rogue can't do what a Voyager can do.
I found my Rogue in the garbage in Tribeca, NYC (!). I've recently overhauled it completely and will never, ever part with it. It's more synth than the average user needs anyway.
@keybdwizrd I would offered $700.if I was there so that other person couldn't get it!!!! I have one in my bedroom closet. If yu know someone that has one or an old one that's functional, hit me back. I'll make arragements to get it!!!! The other keyboard is a digital sampler that use floppy disk, called 'Mirage'. Bought it in the 80's had since then.
And I also noticed that on your lp the lights seemed not to be amber is is right? if so is it just finish touches on it that makes it the tribute edition? like blue lights and wood sides?
what generates the sound on it.. by the way just bought me a lp tribute just like yoursssssssss \o/ man i wish i could live close to you just to learn with you.. it's amazing how guys like you have a good vibe playing it's inspiring.
Hey Tekkentool..., I think keybdwizrd some how managed to get all these great synths that were supposed to come to me! Everything I get is defective and he's got a freakin synth love shack :) Seriously though.., this guy is one of my top favorites to watch on the tube. He has one hell of a collection!
i know!. i think about buying the microX, he has one, i start to like the virus TI, he has one, and now the bloody moog rogue! OH WTF HE HAS A MOPHO AND A FANTOM D: D: D: D: D: D:
He makes that Micro-X look real good too :) Then again I have yet to see a vid of his that wasn't good. Man has some chops.., and clearly a crap load of dough to be affording what he has... Hey Keybdwzrd.., help a brotha out man! If you get tired of ANY of your synths just toss one my way. I'd gladly make your trash my treasure :)
keyboard wiz you have put me to shame your rogue sounds superb, love the added verb and delay, always use mine dry after selling outboard effects unit, really insired to dust her off again cheers is it poss that mine could of gone out of tune,is there away to re tune?
Is the portamento different on on older synths compared to the new ones? I have noticed that oler synthesizers have a lazy glide sound. I found out on the little phatty that you can turn the glide rate while playing and you get that lazy sound.
On old "true VCO" analog synths the portamento rate is usually changed by putting a capacitor and variable resistor in the path of the control voltage feeding the VCO. The charging rate of the capacitor follows an exponential curve, so it changes more slowly at the end of the glide then at the beginning. Maybe this is the reason for the "lazy sound" you mean? On newer synths the envelopes are software generated, so the portamento might be linear and not have the same sound.
As a follow up, without going into differential equations, if you have an RC time constant (port. time) of say 0.5 seconds (pretty long) in a 1 volt per octave analog synth the portamento will take around 0.5 seconds to cover 63% of the distance between say C2 and C3..but to cover the entire distance between the two notes it will take around 5 time constants or another 2 seconds to make it between 63% of C3 and the final value. So the closer you get to the end of the glide it gets "lazy."
And as a follow up to the follow up, I have modern synths that let one choose between linear and exponential portamento. The latter sounds more similar to vintage synths, but as the envelopes are generated in software, the sound is perfect every time. In synths like the above Moog Rogue, there is subtle interaction between the VCOs (which drift around naturally) and all the other controls, which I think may be responsible for the "analog sound."
I have a Roland SH-201 (which is digital) and I have noticed what you are talking about when you say, "the sound is perfect every time." What is the namebrand of the modern synth you talk about? The thing I love most about digital is MIDI connection. The Little Phatty has a digital memory for patches and for calibration and it also has MIDI and It comes in handy when recording. I have enjoyed talking to you about synthesizers and hope to talk again sometime.
Don't forget about difference between portamento RATE and TIME. Rate is how much pitch change per time unit. While TIME is just amount of time needed to get to the following note.
Sure, analog synth is not hard to build from scratch. You could even find someone who knows programming, and make analog synth with digital interface, like Little Phatty - start your own company :))) why not.. analog synths are still loved, but almost nobody makes them anymore.
KBW, can you recommend any books or resources on music theory? I want to learn about different scales / modes so I have some sort of framework to improvise in.
Hmmm... I'm sorry but I can't. I took a zillion piano lessons, but any theory knowledge I have gained has come just from playing (44 years at this point). If you have a local music store (where they give lessons) they can probably suggest some. Otherwise maybe try the Keyboard Forum at the Harmony Central website.
Viska, you may wish to look into a community college or school nearby and see if they have a musicianship course. Also, check out Amazon's many offerings on musicianship books.
A music appreciation course will also put these scales/modes in a better perspective. The Enjoyment of Music by Forney is a great start.

I do have 1 question about 3:13-4:06
Were all of the timbres that were heard, created by the internal circuitry of the ROGUE all by itself?
If so, how can anyone call any instrument that has that capability "not worth owning"?
"Elaine" by ABBA has this kind of patch right in the beginning of the song and I LOVE IT.
nudist0885 2 years ago
Yes, the rogue generated all of the timbres. An effects unit was used for delay and reverb.
keybdwizrd 2 years ago
I've never used a Rogue, but that just sounds like a typical sample and hold filter...
thesemenincident 2 years ago
yes. you use the S&H to control the filter freq.
golafs 2 years ago
I didn't even listen to more than 42 seconds of this before starting to post this message.
It all just depends on what aspect of the voicings of an instrument that you utilize.
I love the following sections; (not in order of preference)
1) 0:09-0:22
2) 1:24-1:30 (and that's 2 octaves)(like the part in MAGIC MAN by HEART)
3) 1:34-1:48
4) 3:13-3:35
5) 3:52-4:06 (the really quiet parts)
