Instead of going through that cutting-out and rearranging process, an easier solution would be to go to College Board. Under Students>Find a College>College Search, they have this really easy quiz where you can just checkmark your preferences and then they'll give you a list with the names of all colleges within your criteria.
Figure out who the main academic advisor for the majors you're interested in. Email their office and ask them to get you in contact with a student in your major. You can ask questions that no one except a student would know.
So last night I dreamed that I was a freshman at Northwestern and I had just arrived in Chicago with my parents. I was settling in and all excited/nervous/ready to cry when i discovered that WheezyWaiter was my roommate. Then somehow I ran into you and you were going to be my college fairy-godmother and show me around Chicago. You were being very helpful until you disappeared and I somehow ran into Kristina and Alex Day. They offered to show me around instead if I gave them gum.
Such a good idea! I never really had a problem deciding which school I wanted to go to because I already knew after I visited all the schools and I only applied and got into 3 schools. Maybe a good video idea could be to disprove college stereotypes like being in a greek organization means you're a party animal.
@oboecutie I was wait listed by 5 different schools. I ended up at one of my top choices but ugh it was so painful during that time. I was on the phone with my friend complaining about a rejection when she received her big envelope from sarah lawrence. I could of really used a video telling me it was going to be ok, which of course was in the end.
My advice is to use the internet to your advantage during the college search. Student review websites are the best thing I had while looking at schools-- College Prowler especially, and College Confidential forums.
I think it's important to remember that you're only committed to the school for 1 semester at a time. I ended up being really unhappy at the first school I chose and transferring to a new college was the best decision I ever made.
Once you realize that you won't be "stuck" if you make a bad choice, there isn't so much pressure which makes it easier to make a decision.
One thing that I've found helps is just picking one and sticking with that decision for a couple days. If regret starts eating at the back of your brain, you probably picked the wrong school. Also, weighing pros and cons is a good idea because you might realize that it really isn't (or is!) worth it to pay an extra 10k a year for better food or weather or whatever the case may be. Last tip: once you make your final choice, get rid of all the "what ifs" in your brain and focus on the present.
kind of surprised you didn't include "visit the school" on this list. when i was getting ready, i thought i had narrowed it down. online, this school was PERFECT for me... had everything on my main and secondary lists. when i went to visit? hated it. no one there was worth knowing and the atmosphere of the school was awful. for me, that's probably the most important part of picking a college... and you left it off.
@theoryoferin you probably should visit the school before you apply. I think visiting the school is implied as a top priority, something you should do before this five step process.
@MsThinkification i already have a masters; pretty well versed in the school visiting. it seemed to me as though that step was completely ignored rather than implied, but hopefully the people actually looking for / needing this advice also thought it was implied.
If possible, it is always helpful to visit the campus as well. i was debating between two schools, both with equal numbers of pros and cons. So my friend and I took a road trip to actually go see them. When I got to the first campus it was like "yeah. This is a nice school. I could see giong here" when i got to the second school it was like "oh man! I love this place! Its gorgeous and just... it just feels right!" And I definitely think I made the right choice :)
One more tip for those that are interested: Visit the schools. I narrowed my choices down to two doing basically what Hayley suggested and then visited them both and one just had a much better feel for me.
I actually did all of this, but my last step was a bit different. I actually went to the campuses and took the tours for my top choices and that really made the decision making a no contest. =D The final nail on the coffin, so to speak or whatever that expression is. I was truly satisfied with my academic career~so yea. <3 G'luck to all the freshman. ^_^
Ugh I think I'm going to try this. My teachers are all "You gotta choose what college you're going to and what you're going to major in and what kind of life you want" BUT I HAVE NO CLUEEE.
I really wish I had this video to guide me back in 07... Now I'm 3 schools later and still feel like I made the wrong choice, but I'm sticking it out and just getting done with it. My advice: DO AS HAYLEY SAYS or you'll end up like me wondering every single day, "What if I'd gone to that other school...?"
Tip for applicants: don't set your hear on just one school before you get your acceptances (unless you're applying binding early decision). I'm at a university I initially didn't want to go to, but I'm having the best experience I could have asked for.
May I also throw in, if you have the chance tour the school! The vibe given off by the campus actually plays a huge role. The school might look good on paper, but then it might be too formal or silly when you get there.
i'm watching this from my college library hahaha. but i do want to go to a different one since i'm doing community college first...so yay this video was very helpful! xD
I'm a college grad, and I used to work in the admissions office at my alma mater with prospective students. One of the most important things you can do to figure out if you will really fit in somewhere is to go visit the school, take a tour, and talk to current students. most schools staff students to do tours and whatnot. take advantage of this. i know it will feel awkward, but they will be glad to help you and be honest with you about their personal experiences.
I'm a h.s. junior & I really recommend making friends with the upperclassman. Last year, I made some senior friends & being able to ask them questions about what to expect during the application process was helpful because chances are that because we went to the same school, I would have similar problems. Also, it gives you an idea of where you need to be come senior year. Bonus points if they are applying to the same schools you want to go to & if they get accepted, you get that input also. :)
I needed this tonight after a bad day; I can climb up on my high horse and tell you all how dreadful it is that cost should be a factor in the US. *Smug European*
im not looking for a collage, im too young and watch this because you are amazing! but i am trying to find a highschool and found this video to be very helpful. thank you
Can you talk about essay questions and strategies? I'm currently in that process (submitting some tomorrow!) but I would really love it if someone I admire as a writer could speak to it.
I would also HIGHLY recommend visiting college campuses. It really is one of those "you will know" kind of deals. The vibe you get from the school itself, and the students who are likely to give you a tour really will let you know if it's the kind of place where you want to be.
I just applied to three unis last week. My top choice? The one that has colours of gold and red, and a gryphon as its mascot :) No, Harry Potter hasn't drastically influenced my life at all .... why do you ask? :P
College apps...stressful. But this came at a good time. I'll be sure to come back here in several months when the various colleges have helpfully narrowed down my options by not accepting me.:/
Thankyou, so much! over the last few months i have been FREAKING OUT about choosing colleges! I have a question! if your torn between 2 or majors how do you choose them and also are joint / double courses a good idea?
I would also suggest that you actually visit your top choices, because what you read might not always be what you see. && if you're thinking about a community college - - BEWARE. If you know you want to transfer to an out-of-state university after ... they probably won't take all of your credits.
