For all she said and everything we know about this recording (the fact that they paid her ridiculous £ 30 for recording), the impression I have is that Pink Floyd used the girl's talent, thanked and sent her away . Not even had the decency to inform her that her voice would be in the recording. Where I come from the name that is cheating.
At least she won the lawsuit against them. Better late than never.
Pô, eu imaginava uma cantora negra que tinha feito aquilo! mas não foi grande decepção, a voz na gravação tinha inspiração negra, não sei, tinha algo de negro ali com certeza.
I had always wondered about it- was it scripted, must have taken a ton of takes, (I too thought she was black) and didn't have a clue til The Making of DSotM came out on DvD. And they band's brief explanation really didnt put it all together for me. It was awesome to hear her side of the story. It put's it into a much more complete perspective.
@muzictherpy What a big contribution she gave to this. And strange how does this song have something of sad and joyful at the same time. Undoubtly GGS is one of the most amazing moments of the album.
they made powerfull art but the way they did looks like an invitation to sing at the church! and yes i thought she was black with big mouth ...they made strong musics and just forget it what they did didnt pay her ...real artist are really strange...
unbelievable. "a happy accident". this is how Pink Floyd works/ed. they always made tons of experiments in the studio. like testing new ideas/intruments whatever. Clares vocal part was one of them. and this one was the jackpot. thank you so much Clare Torry for this wonderful masterpiece. no other voice on the planet i can imagine could have made it this beautyful.
In 1973 Clare Torry was paid the handsome sum of £30 for this Pink Floyd session, and had it not been recorded on a sunday she would have earned just £15. It clearly demonstrates the exploitation factor session singers endured during the 1960s & 70s. Not to mention the blur between singing and composing.
@TheSessionConnection Are you kidding? £30 back then was around ten times as much then. Not to mention, she exploited Pink Floyd for her one day of singing by claiming she co-wrote The Great Gig in the Sky, then getting paid handsomely (no doubt) for it. I love her singing on the song, but she seems kind of a bitch in real life.
I don't know about you but if I had a band, got some random chick to improvise a song, released it and it was as good as that, I'd send her a nice big cheque without her even asking.
If I build a guitar and sell it to a musician and many years later that musician uses that guitar in the making of a hit song I can go out and sue him for big bucks? Cool!
@72734695 - better analogy - you build a guitar that plays several melodies - that you composed - by itself, sell it to a musician who later uses that guitar, and one of the melodies it plays, in a hit song. I think THEN you can go out and sue him for big bucks - or at least songwriting credit.

Wonderful lady, so modest and yet she has the most amazing voice, only Eva Cassidy came close - would love to hear her sing live with her amazing talent.
@TomGreenUK according to wikipedia: In 2004, Torry sued Pink Floyd and EMI for songwriting royalties, on the basis that her contribution to "Great Gig in the Sky" constituted co-authorship with Richard Wright. Originally, she was paid the standard Sunday flat studio rate of £30. In 2005, a settlement was reached in High Court in Torry's favour, although terms were not disclosed. All pressings after 2005 list the composition to Richard Wright and Clare Torry.
Yea and what a coincidence during the interview, she never mention that she sued them. I prefer to listen to the live The Great Gig in the Sky with Rachel Fury in 87-89, now she has a voice.
That is fascinating as was this vid here on the Tube. I remember when I was a kid looking for her credit on the LP to see who it was. I never forgot her name and and the track was amazing. I listened to it over and over again for years. As I listened to her story I thought too, was she paid for this...and I assumed she was black....lol Clare if your out there somewhere you have been my hero for eons! .lol. I can't believe they didn't contact you when DSOTM was released!
@PinkFloydPeru I have friends in the music industry. I'm glaf to see they amended it to show the composition as Right/Torry. With as little fame as she had from the rest of her work (at least in America) it's good to see credit placed where credit is due. The settlement amount doesn't matter. Floyd can afford it and She deserves it.
During her court case, she also could've gotten co-writing credit for "Seamus" from the 1971 album "Meddle," since many people at the time thought the real Seamus belonged to Steve Marriott of the Faces (Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood's old group), but he was in fact Clare's dog.
@TomGreenUK Too many factors to say. The details of the settlement would have specified one way or the other but with as much of a (insert derogatory word here) Waters is reported to be, I think he would have had the attitude of - take this and get of our teat.
@Edgarrmz07 Yes, it is Clare Torry on the original Dark Side record. Not sure if she's on any other recording with Pink Floyd (except the Knebworth recording), but, she's done a bunch of other stuff with many other artists and other mediums. Including Olivia Newton John, Procol Harum, Culture Club, Meat Loaf...and many TV Commercials in Britain.
@veronicachic at the time she got a flat fee for the session, i think it was 30 pounds. i saw some interview (article i think) online where she describes eventually approaching them and a settlement being made as a result. if i remember right she described leaving this to late on in career so she wouldn't get a reputation for being "difficult" etc. wikip says it did go to court (?), found in her favour, so an undisclosed settlement made, and a writers credit on later pressings
What an amazing collaboration and that story of her experience! I heard another band member speak about it and got a different interpretation/viewpoint but both interviews clearly state how amazing it was that this song came about! I just love it.
i just saw this and i can't believe it either! i've been listening to this album since the mid 70's and always thought it was a black woman too! regardless, she had one helluva set of lungs!!
In 1973 Clare Torry was paid £30 for this Pink Floyd session, and had it not been recorded on a sunday, she would have earned £15. It clearly demonstrates the exploitation factor session singers endured during the 1960's & 70's. Not to mention the blur between singing and composing.
I too used to think the female voice was a black woman's. I have see PF in concert where all three back ups had to do the vocals live...........just shows you that perfection just happens, sometimes!!
Her version of events is different to the way David, Richard, Nick and Roger tell it on the Classic Albums Dark Side of the Moon documentary. I find this rather odd.
This woman created a masterpiece. She definately listened to many of the great saxophone players. You can tell from the phrasing she uses. Who would have thought a white Brittish woman could possess that kind of soul?
dame clare torry ... delivers a timeless and immortal piece of musical history ... the downright holy grail ... and ' on to the next job i never gave it much thought ' ... the number of people who have wept loved were born died and been buried to this song ... god bless her ... and all the brits ! dame clare torry indeed
Simone Weil once wrote that God is present in all great works of art, this could very well be an example, perhaps He was smiling down at her and Pink Floyd.
From the first time I heard this back in high school, I have loved this song. And just like Fetcha200, I assumed this was a black woman singing. I was recently listening to Dark side and was compelled to look up who sang the original version.....and here she is......Clare, You are one of a kind.
Clare Torry should have a website where we can all PayPal her $1 every time we listen to The Great Gig In The Sky. Without her, Dark Side Of The Moon would never be what it is.
LOL! she's so fucking nonchalant about the whole thing! "oh well, jolly good. on to the next job." She doesn't even seem to realize or care that she created the most epic moving vocal in the history of popular music! Watching this interview kind of kills the mystique...
@slevisman on the contrary: her modesty is the modesty of the truly talented who know they pass on their gift, for others to enjoy, without making it into a big ego thing. The fact that pink floyd called it an accident: now that kills the mystique!!!
I wonder how much they payed her at that time or if she gets a any minimal royalties from it. She didn't mention anything about that. In any case, awesome song, awesome album and awesome band!
@NarLiv She was paid £30 at the time of recording in the studio and received no royalties from her contribution.. later in the 1990's she launched a claim for royalties. She got an out of court settlement which she is prohibited from revealing any details about. I bet it was a nice chunk of wonga though!
its funny you hear the story of how things are made and then either some of the magic in your head dies or it gives you a great appritiation of accidents.
I grew up with this music and am happy to see how much it still strikes a chord with so many.It wasn't until the advent of the internet that I too learned of Clare Torry and was also surprised by the fact she was not a large black woman!Very soulful performance that has been covered well, but not surpassed!!!
clare doesn't sound black at all, the notes she sings are really soulful typical of black vocalists, but IMO the timbre of her voice makes it quite clear she was a small little white girl :)
What an incredible way for a milestone in modern music to have occurred. I was always convinced this was a big black woman who had sold her very life and soul to the devil. Marvellous
Have you ever had something so devastating happen to you that the only way to describe how you feel is to say, "my soul feels like Clare Torrys vocals on Great Gig...?
After watching this, Clare Torry goes way up in my estimation and Pink Floyd go way down. Great Gig was one of the highlights of the best-selling rock album of all time, yet she was ignored and never received any royalties. Shame on them. Yet I note she appears to be healthy & upbeat. Good for her.
Well, unless there's a story I'm not aware of, it doesn't sound like she negotiated a contract which would pay royalties. Nor does she deserve any. Session players are paid a fee for their labor, nothing more. Hell of a voice on her, though.
that album". I listened to it again...but carefully...and this is how i fell in love with Pink Floyd. The Dark Side is one of the best atmosphere that musicians have created ever.
the first time i bought the dark side of the moon I was 13. didn't understand anything about music but i knew pink floyd cause of their fame. So one day i decided to bought That album and after listening to it a couple of times I really didn't like it....i said "they sing just a little i don't like instrumetal albums". few days later I woke up in the morning and I had this voice singin in my head and it was the great gig in the sky....and I said "shit this is Pink Floyd...wow I even didn't like
The first time I ever heard The Great Gig in the sky, I understood, and I knew that I was fortunate to be an earwitness to divine nature...Thank you Claire and thankGod for your talent.....
@antiochus66 Funny that, as i have read she was paid £30.00 at the time of recording in the studio. later she claimed royalties which was settled out of court in the 1990's.
@antiochus66 well its just what i read from a book about Pink Floyd :-) So i cant say if its the exact amount. so, i don't know, its just what i read.
As i matter of interest, where did you get your information ?
i work in the film industry..and have done lot's of jobs at abbey road.
met some of the people. my take on it is the music industry in the 50s,60s and 70s was full of sharks.
many bands ended up with very little financial rewards..
when power and financial muscle moved from record companies to the musicians some of them became very careful at best down right mean and miserly at worst..
mccartney is a good example of a major meanie
kate bush was always fantastic at paying people for good work
Very interesting interview. I could have listened to more of that. She certainly desevred joint credit for writing the song as she may not have written lyrics or the backing chords but her vocals were what made the song. Anything else simply wouldn't have done. Wonder how much money she got when she won in court. Hope it was a lot. Great great song and she shouldn't be modest about it or casual about its greatness.
Oh Clare, this monologue was a glorious happen-by-chance, with the Spanish in the title..
You've given us a seminal moment in the history of music, I believe. Quite superb. Many will follow but none will arrive.
I'm delighted to hear that you're now listed as an author, and distressed to hear that the band argued against your listing. A black mark on their souls; they should have showered you with riches, as you now are receiving. I most certainly bought it; I must again on CD. Maravilloso!
It reminds me of the story of Astrid Gilberto and her vocals on Girl From Ipanema.
Great Gig in the Sky was part of our destiny. Can you imagine how many great things are planned out to the letter every day? It's pretty obvious that being mindful of the present moment, and grateful for our opportunities is about the best plan anyone can have.
I love this interview. Great Gig In The Sky is one of the hardest songs to sing in the Universe.

Clare I love you
SIMFormation 1 year ago
From the first time I heard this back in high school, I have loved this song. And just like Fetcha200, I assumed this was a black woman singing. I was recently listening to Dark side and was compelled to look up who sang the original version.....and here she is......Clare, You are one of a kind.

Claire Torry is great gig in the sky. XD
Awsome song.

The most revealing thing she says is that she decided to treat her voice as another instrument and that is exactly how it sounds to me
sutsie 1 year ago 3
Clare Torry should have a website where we can all PayPal her $1 every time we listen to The Great Gig In The Sky. Without her, Dark Side Of The Moon would never be what it is.

LOL! she's so fucking nonchalant about the whole thing! "oh well, jolly good. on to the next job." She doesn't even seem to realize or care that she created the most epic moving vocal in the history of popular music! Watching this interview kind of kills the mystique...
slevisman 1 year ago
@slevisman Exactly. It's like she doesn't even care. She has a "Meh, it was alright" attitude about it. Disappointed me
SPkx1 1 year ago
@slevisman on the contrary: her modesty is the modesty of the truly talented who know they pass on their gift, for others to enjoy, without making it into a big ego thing. The fact that pink floyd called it an accident: now that kills the mystique!!!
dcgallin 4 months ago
I wonder how much they payed her at that time or if she gets a any minimal royalties from it. She didn't mention anything about that. In any case, awesome song, awesome album and awesome band!
NarLiv 1 year ago
@NarLiv She was paid £30 at the time of recording in the studio and received no royalties from her contribution.. later in the 1990's she launched a claim for royalties. She got an out of court settlement which she is prohibited from revealing any details about. I bet it was a nice chunk of wonga though!
underpantswedgy 1 year ago
its funny you hear the story of how things are made and then either some of the magic in your head dies or it gives you a great appritiation of accidents.

Amazing Clare Torry. Thanks for the background on this happy accident. Interesting that you seem puzzled about it too. Strange. Love it.
IDoSoLoveGreenEggs 1 year ago
Amazing. Out of an accidental situation like that, she created something eternal.

I grew up with this music and am happy to see how much it still strikes a chord with so many.It wasn't until the advent of the internet that I too learned of Clare Torry and was also surprised by the fact she was not a large black woman!Very soulful performance that has been covered well, but not surpassed!!!
michael1792 1 year ago 2
clare doesn't sound black at all, the notes she sings are really soulful typical of black vocalists, but IMO the timbre of her voice makes it quite clear she was a small little white girl :)

she's white?? O.O I had no idea...

What an incredible way for a milestone in modern music to have occurred. I was always convinced this was a big black woman who had sold her very life and soul to the devil. Marvellous

Have you ever had something so devastating happen to you that the only way to describe how you feel is to say, "my soul feels like Clare Torrys vocals on Great Gig...?
schultz970 1 year ago
After watching this, Clare Torry goes way up in my estimation and Pink Floyd go way down. Great Gig was one of the highlights of the best-selling rock album of all time, yet she was ignored and never received any royalties. Shame on them. Yet I note she appears to be healthy & upbeat. Good for her.
Gruntol5 2 years ago
Well, unless there's a story I'm not aware of, it doesn't sound like she negotiated a contract which would pay royalties. Nor does she deserve any. Session players are paid a fee for their labor, nothing more. Hell of a voice on her, though.
Cledus2000 1 year ago
Too true on session players
musicman9982007 1 year ago
@Gruntol5 She's upbeat probably because she sued them for royalties and won an undisclosed(though presumably large) settlement out of court.
Trablo 1 year ago
@Gruntol5 she did actually get royalties, even though it took her a lawsuit to get it

that album".

So one day i decided to bought That album and after listening to it a couple of times I really didn't like it....i said "they sing just a little i don't like instrumetal albums". few days later I woke up in the morning and I had this voice singin in my head and it was the great gig in the sky....and I said "shit this is Pink Floyd...wow I even didn't like

the guys treated her pretty bad...£60.00 cash in hand.
no royalties in 30 years and she gave a vocal better than anything they ever did...
antiochus66 2 years ago 3
@antiochus66 Funny that, as i have read she was paid £30.00 at the time of recording in the studio. later she claimed royalties which was settled out of court in the 1990's.
underpantswedgy 1 year ago
@underpantswedgy
you are wrong i think it was £300 for her work..
the pink floyd machine always were piss poor payers..
the school kids from another brick got nothing but a sandwich and 200 quid for the school..
super talented fuckers but greedy pigs....
antiochus66 1 year ago
@antiochus66 well its just what i read from a book about Pink Floyd :-) So i cant say if its the exact amount. so, i don't know, its just what i read.
As i matter of interest, where did you get your information ?
underpantswedgy 1 year ago
i work in the film industry..and have done lot's of jobs at abbey road.
met some of the people. my take on it is the music industry in the 50s,60s and 70s was full of sharks.
many bands ended up with very little financial rewards..
when power and financial muscle moved from record companies to the musicians some of them became very careful at best down right mean and miserly at worst..
mccartney is a good example of a major meanie
kate bush was always fantastic at paying people for good work

Clare has a voice of an angel just like great gig in the sky. All the emotions from anger to content while an angel goes to heaven.

LOL @ the string quartet comment. Suck on that Hans Keller.
