Leaving a 2-month-old around a frisky, muscular, roughhousing Lab puppy really didn't freak either of them? I've raised black Labs before, and they're very strong as puppies. Besides, a puppy has a natural defense against predators: its bite. A baby has no such defense. I am not upset that the puppy was put down. I think that would be an insult to the child who died.

The child in a swing appeared to the puppy as a toy. The puppy killed the child treating it would as a swinging plaything. Of course the child should never have been left alone, at that age for any length of time. That's where training is crucial. Evaluations should have been held at the shelter to determine if the injuries were by that of a 'vicious' puppy (>.>) or from just a puppy. Should not have been put down. I think the parents went along with this whole thing so the focus was not on them and the fact that they left their baby unattended with an Animal. That's the crime. I'd never do that to my baby. Yes, if the dog was vicious, unfortunate actions should be taken. I just don't think the pup was.

@Eudie64 that is true. i read that black labs usually master (and maybe even worship) humans. they make great dogs around kids and are also great watch dogs especially for blind people like my grandmother. if a lab was to do that it obviously had been trained very bad behavior and also had to have been not fed at all. The lab my grandma has is trained to handle small children. About the only thing he will do that is even close to this is sniff them!

Ok yes it's sad that Zane got killed by his puppy, but i bet the dog attacked because she got hit by the swing zane was on. I mean, i have a brown 1 year old lab and she would never, NEVER do something like that, besides i'm 13 and my sister is 5 and she loves us both...though i don't know about my bulldog because he bit my sis because she was hurting him(i would too), bulldog=lazy but obediant, lab=hyper at times but obediant.

I don't agree with the top comment how could you know if the dog was abused? first of all this dog is a puppy it probably thought it was a play thing since their almost the same size. If it was a bigger dog the aggressive behavior is proably learned. I highly doubt that dog was abused. Also some dogs that have never been abused act like they've been abused. My friends dog learned to to be scared from her mother (who was abused)

Who the fuck leaves a 2-MONTH old BABY alone on a swing set?! I agree that killing the puppy was useless, pointless, and cruel but beyond that is the blatant irresponsibility of the parents. If anything, they should be facing charges of neglect for their child. Doing something so stupid as leaving a 2-month old baby deserves nothing less than punishing the parents, not a 3-month old puppy with no way of knowing what it was doing.

The child in a swing appeared to the puppy as a toy. The puppy killed the child treating it would as a swinging plaything. Of course the child should never have been left alone, at that age for any length of time. Putting the child in a swing, leaving it alone, in company of a puppy that large was a stupid, unthinking thing to do. May God forgive them, I doubt they will be able to forgive themselves.

That's where training is crucial. Evaluations should have been held at the shelter to determine if the injuries were by that of a 'vicious' puppy (>.>) or from just a puppy. Should not have been put down. I think the parents went along with this whole thing so the focus was not on them and the fact that they left their baby unattended with an Animal. That's the crime. I'd never do that to my baby. Yes, if the dog was vicious, unfortunate actions should be taken. I just don't think the pup was.

@TheTudiscoKid I think the facts they said are being missed though. It the police said it looks like the baby was 'mauled' then I would agree that the attack was intended from the puppy. But two things. 1. They said the baby 'seemed to suffer injuries caused by puppy'. That could mean anything. Bringing me to the second point. Puppies are rambunctious. They're not trained yet. Not at 2 mo. old. They still play fight w/brethren and growl and roll around without regard for consequence (cont...)

Trailer trash, probably downright stupid. Especially a lab doesn't eat kids, the usually lick or cuddle someone to death. Was the dog properly fed? Did the parents just blame the dog for their own faults??

@Eudie64 that is true. i read that black labs usually master (and maybe even worship) humans. they make great dogs around kids and are also great watch dogs especially for blind people like my grandmother. if a lab was to do that it obviously had been trained very bad behavior and also had to have been not fed at all. The lab my grandma has is trained to handle small children. About the only thing he will do that is even close to this is sniff them!

The reason people are mentioning the dog instead is that it was pointed out that the dog was euthanized. It's obviously a horrible tragedy that this poor child died, but killing a puppy hardly seems to rectify the situation any. The dog is only a dog afterall. The parents are indeed at fault for leaving a helpless baby unattended with an animal.

I am a mother of a 5 month old and ALWAYS said that my child is now and forever first in my life. I am bringing up the dog situation because I am so LIVID about those parents. I am upset about the child dying. If they were parents in the first place and watched child AND pet and not leave baby unattended for 1 1/2 hrs w/an animal like idiots, the baby would be alive.

@MisLoveToBeFree So, believe me, I understand your compassion. I would cease to exist without my lovely daughter and it's because they didn't watch either that makes me sick. Like I said before, you want to be a pet owner, be a responsible one, ESPECIALLY if you have a child. It was not the puppy's fault. It was the parent's fault. That child could still be alive if they realized the limitations of their animal and raised both child and puppy right. It is sickening. I can agree w/you on that.

It's not a terrible thing. You just let them kill an animal so you could get away scot-free when you KNOW you were wrong for leaving that baby unattended for that long. Let's let the police blame who they want and kill an innocent animal just so we aren't brought to justice for the life of their child!

You people are crazy!! I love animals too, but for God's sake, we're talking about an innocent little baby, one of our own that was killed by a dog. I don't care how old the dog was, I care about the poor baby. Now me personally would never in a million years leave my child alone with an animal, animals are unpredictable you never know what they'll do, therefor I believe they are capable of doing anything, no matter how young or how old. It's still an animal.
