No, it's not. However, the legal status of these animals is better defined, as there are regulations and directives for the exploitation, welfare, husbandry, slaughter etc. At least, in Europe, see the five freedoms of FAWC.

How so is it savage? simply because an animal is "cute" as opposed to say a cow for example doesn't change the validity of using it for food, double standards based on what you feel is the greater animal isn't a good way to look at it. As an avid animal lover and knowing that animals like mine are eaten doesn't change the fact that I love my pets nor does it make me hate the people who would eat said animals. To each their own, just don't make double standards in ethics.
