  • @mtoussieh You can get the original complete score for free on the website IMSLP --->Petrucci Library--->Browse by composers--->L--->Jean Baptiste Lully--->Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. There are three versions and the last one is fully readable. An English translation of the text and lyrics is available at: w w w . h o l d e n h u r s t . c o . u k . The french text is available at: h t t p : / / w w w . s i t e - m o l i e r e . c o m

  • This is technically the first French opera, but it's really more like a modern musical in terms of structure. This is because the French thought Italian opera was nonsensical, and instead replace what would have been recitative with spoken word.

  • @KunningKaqmere

    No, it's not an opera; it is a ballet.

  • @starcommander55 The French called it "Musical Comedy": it has aspects of Opera, Dance, and Staged Drama. It predates the American "Musical Comedy" by nearly four centuries. Unfortunately, this video cuts out the spoken dialogue.

  • @KunningKaqmere According to the title on copy of the 1670 score I have:

    "Le Bourgois Gentil-Homme

    Comedie-Ballet"

    So the French called it a ballet.

  • @KunningKaqmere You're right about negative French attitudes towards Italy and their opera, but Cadmus et Hermione in 1673 (three years after this) is actually considered to be the first French opera.

  • What a beautiful production. I have always wanted to see an authentic Lully opera, and this seems to be one. Thank you!

  • @Gran419 this isn't the full production, its been edited to show the music only, there is more purely theatrical stuff (spoken word). This was a comedie en lyrique, written after a great insult was perpetrated against Louis XIV from the turks

  • Where can i get this music? The soundtrack?
