The blue guy knows what he is doing the polka dot dude doesnt know how to react or enter. But its much easier if you guys do the 1st movement entering w/out fear, you strike, observe, exploit his weakness, make a strategy, disarm and disable him
A few years ago in school in Phils. We had highland tribesmen visit. They enacted a story with a simulated a duel in it. They both held their weapon in the same way over the shoulder. When we asked the young 'warriors' they said that their 'bolo' fighting relied on nimble feet and timing to dodge blows and strike. When asked about blocks, they shrugged laughed and said just get out of the way. Just thought I'd share because this exchange reminded me of how I imagine they would have fenced.
Interesting story & thanks. Where in the Philippines were the tribesmen - when you say highlands I immediately think of Igorots of Northern Luzon, the Mangyan of Mindoro, or one of the many tribes in Mindanao... I picked up the cocked position from a lineage from Negros but I don't know if it's lowland or mountain. My focus was to not get hit at all as if it was a blade. I did try to use footwork to avoid most blows but since it was stick I use a number of blocks from a lineage in Stockton, CA.
They were from different tribes visiting schools to raise awareness and understanding of the native cultures. They were from tribes in Northern Luzon. The chief said they used to practice for cutting and decapitating on animals starting from chicken all the way to deer and wild pigs they caught hunting ,From when a boy can swing the blade. This was a neccesity due to the then headhunting culture as they described.
@egjundis very nice " kabayan" bro! Reminds me of my cousins back home. Very agile and responsive! My old uncles use to tell me stories when they were guerillas helping the gi's in the japanese occupation and how you gotta keep away from getting hit with the blade in historical applications. They used to fight invading soldiers and survive with that awareness. Really glad to see it being carried-on and much respect!
yeah, it never made much sence to me why people spar with live stick with such limited protection. I understand higher level of awarness and all but the injuries arn't worth it!
Those kind of injuries take you out of training for awhile.
Just curious. By what standards would say something is good stick fighting. I see that you feel there is some standard for good FMA. Is your preference for something more like the central Cebu styles like Doce Pares & Balintawak? Do you have recommended youtube videos?
I wouldn't say nuts. I've taken greater risk surfing & skydiving in Hawaii or climbing in Yosemite. But just like those times I would assess the risk and get clear on my motivations before I would fight at a DBMA Gathering. Marc Denny has maintained a space and in my opinion a safe venue for people to truly test themselves in ritualized combat.
hey guys, i really like watching training videos like this a lot more than the ones where everyone is just trading blows without any distinguisable techniques. I havent played in a while and miss it sooo much. <3 Michelle

that was just kind of fencing, you have to have a real fight not Slash, back up, Slash, back up. me and my cousin stick fight all the time, it hurts but its alot funner.
Of course, but the level of interaction also depends on the intention. In my case, I am clear I have a stick (an impact weapon) so I am swinging it to cause impact damage. At the same time, I am treating his weapon as blade. I don't want to trade blows. I got in several glancing blows but did not get hit. In other matches I've given and received a lot more, but then willing to exchange blows was part of my game.
yep, first time full-contact limited armor. But I had had a few street altercations, a few challenge matches to first blood, and 11 years of FMA by the time this clip was taken.
Your video is good because you feel the pain of a real stick hitting on your body. Not like other Arnis video sparring that I've seen. The technique of avoiding the attack of your oppenent is not put into consideration because they are just dependent on their armor when they got hit. They just accept the attack and return the favor of hitting harder on their oppenent. In real stick fight there is no armor and 2 to 4 solid blows the fight is over.
orange guy, you really should strengthen your wrist and develop your angles. dont attack the air in front of you. go forward and hit with intent. your reaction time while avoiding strikes is pretty decent.
i dont know your teachers, but im sure they have noticed these things if they are competent. keep it up!
the guy in the blue shirt cocks his stick back, caveman style. i would have blown out his elbow. i understand what he is trying to accomplish, but he needs to refine that. blue also needs to develop his footwork to land those powerstrikes. on the plus-- he has a lot of power that he can learn to control.
you don't need anything depending on the risk one is willing to take. My partner has on street hocky gear I have on gardening gloves just to protect against abrasion incase I need to punch him in the head. I had already taken damage to my wrist from previous training so I wore a Lameco wrist gard on one hand. Also that same day someone did have bones in their hand broken so and he was wearing the same limited hand protection I was using... it's up to you
You stalked your opponent, and picked your shots. You had a solid wall and didnt loose your composure. When you took your shots, you got in and out clean. Which BTW to all the experts, is the ultimate goal when fighting, especially with weapons. So Im a bit confused by all the comments. Perhaps one of the Maestros could post one of there fights to show me what Im missing?
Nice comment on a five-year-old video of someone's first time out. Please post your fights so you to can receive the benefits of constructive criticism. Lol. You are right though the video is of two people who are not good fighters yet IMHO.
Daghan Salamat. What I have had to work on since then is conditioning, offensive mindset and skill set at different ranges, and with different types of opponents.
No. Actually most of the folks involved with this particular are highly educated professionals. If you are really interested follow yumboyack02's comments. Personally since I am one of the guys (fighting) playing I can say it's a great way to test yourself on grow as a person.

This is one of the very few "real" stick fights on youtube. Both combatants have almost no armor, and a powerful stick. This is the real stuff.

Not bad. Plywood on the walls will help keep your fighter's butts from going through the drywall!!!
Have you ever been out to one of the Dog Brothers gatherings? I think you'd like it.

Never underestimate the stick, Enigdesh23... been there... Unless you want to pit against me?
One powerful strike from a kamagong or rattan stick can shatter a bone... And yes those sticks are really painful...

awesome, just tell the guy in the blue to avoid keeping that striking stance for too long, it gets predictable to where he's gonna hit.

Nice controlled sparring.
And I really like your way of seeing things in sparring as written further down.
Not only exchanging blows but fighting intelligent getting your live hand more to live will accelerate your skills.
